If game devs are out for a profit, full loot ffa pvp style games are epic fail. Try this: npc cities should be safe zones. Have universal banking system. One random item drops and can be looted from gravestone. If housing is a feature, have duplicate keys that disintegrate upon death, keep the original key in bank. Personal houses are not destructable, but guild cities are.

I'm pretty sure EVE is profitable, guy.
Be sure to email this revelation of yours to CCP Games. Save them before they go and waste any more money on EVE development.

I don't think it must be either, or.
There are players that want FFA PvP, and full loot. Witness Darkfall. The "profit" part is just a matter of efficient development. Darkfall, even with all it's flaws, shows there is a market for such games.
EQ made a profit with relatively small subs. There's no reason other well made polished games that cater to a niche can't do the same thing.
I think we will eventually head into an era of the MMORPG where this is the rule, not the exception. Engines like the Hero Engine will make development time faster and faster, and cheaper. The amount of subs needed to turn a profit will go down, and make it reasonable to go after all niche markets.
The other way to go is single servers. WoW could put up one FFA PvP full loot server and probably fill it with players.
ZZulu - Eve ffa pvp? when was last time you were pk'd in Jita?

I have to agree, and I think you really hit the most critical point there. The development has to take into consideration realistic expectations of the target audience size. If your target audience is 50k, building a game that requires 100k to sustain is just silly. It seems like some devs know what the realistic number is but bank on inflated speculative numbers based on WOW bringing millions into the market... in spite of all history and evidence to the contrary.

Just because people don't, doesn't mean they can't. There's not enough reward to justify what you need to risk.

I watched atleast 6 different traders get WTF Owned!!!! in three seperate trade hubs yesterday alone.
Yes you can get destroyed in every area of space if you're stupid.

Like these guys, you mean?

Note to self, always check link before posting. Anyway if you want to see the kills just type Jita into the system filter :P
you can kill a ton of people in jita if you're willing to die for it
you can also freely kill people there if you're at war with them
Lol, when did you last PLAY Eve! "Suicide Kessies awaaaay!" I often take a suicide kestrel for a run, for the fun of it. Tempting gullible newbies into stealing ore from a jetcan you leave conveniently floating about also used to make me laugh.
You can be PK'd anywhere, if someone has the mind to do so, because all they will effectively lose is a disposable ship.
PK happens a great deal in Corp Wars, too, and it is extremely common for a Corp formed up by newbies to be ganked without warning, perfectly legally, in any system at all.
NOTE: I don't use "newbie" as a form of disrespect. It merely means 'new player'.
This thread is an abomination.
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
On we sweep with threshing oar, our only goal will be the western shore."
Naa this thread is funny.
Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981
I thinke both EvE and Darkfall show they are truely real. Hell, even Ultima Online is still around
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
I would like to dedicate my first post in 3 years or so to calling you a moron.
That is all.
I don't get your concept of "Full loot FFA PVP" but take a look at EVE, more than 5 years and growing.
However it is partially true as the majority of the MMOs are "death-means-nothing-besides-walking-time" or "majority of the high-end-content-in-instanced-areas" games.
I guess EVE isn't profitable. Oh wait- it makes more then LOTRO / CoX / EQ2 / more then any other wow clone except maybe WAR? Must be a fluke!
this thread is pure troll
And yes EVE is FFA plenty have died in jita
If Blizzard brought out PvP as brutal as that in Eve, most of the "hardcore" PvP'ers would crap in their pants and run crying for their mommies. PvP in WoW is so much of a joke I don't even count the PvP'ers in there AS PvP'ers. It's carebear, candyfloss PvP.
So its only REAL PvP if you lose a few hours of time when you lose? A skilled, controleld macth up in an arena or battleground isn't REAL? How real is it, ganking somone solo who doesn't see you coming with 5 of your friends, since thats what it always comes down to. Real PvPers rarely walk out in the open, announce their intentions and look for a fair fight. They wait patiently for their target to be at its weakest, stirke at the best time so the outcome is already known, then beat their chests in triumph and brag about how cool they are. Then they snap into reality, when their Mom calls them for dinner;)
Here's a tip! They're both real. One is FAIR and one isn't. Being FAIR doesn't make it less REAL. Both can be fun as well, unless of course you have an attitude problem, which is the biggest problem with FFA PvP games. The players ruin them time and time again.
Heres a tip! neither are real they're video games attempting to be realistic. Realistic is when you have serious repercussions and unfair environments because that is what the world is made of right?
Wow pvp is lol respawn, wow is never log out and be farther from your goals then when you logged in. Tell me how thats realistic.

Who said anything about realistic=) I was refering to the dumb "REAL" vs fake, carebear or whatever other derogatory term some people apply to PvP they don't like. You made my example clear in the QUOTE, hehe. Who's asking for realism anyway? You want REAL...go delete your character when you die, delete the account, burn the disk, then your computer, then punch yourself in the face in real life so you can be the tough guy=) Nothing is stopping you.
Someone please explain to me the profit in Darkfall? Sorry to disillusion you, but that game will be history in less than a year or so. Clueless developers will be the reason. They don't have an glint of an idea how to implement a ffa full loot game.
It can be done, but it must require the proper consequences.
Oh and Eve is a very good example of a ffa full loot game that is successful. They have well thought out consequences in some areas and none in others which gives players a choice of risk. Now Eve is not perfect, some rules are a bit obtuse, but all in all a decent job. That is why Eve will continue to succeed and Darkfall will die a quiet death.
Ain't it just.
One more irony--- the OP says Jita system in EVE is a 'safe zone'. Funny, because Jita has always been one of the most dangerous places in all of EVE for Alliance members to visit.
I keep saying this day after day. EVE has no safe zones. People die everywhere in EVE. The safest players in eVE are new players only because we cant directly wardev the newbie corps. However! We can still kill newbies at anytime via suicide ganks, etc. But there normally is no reason to kill them because you lose more then you take from a newbie...
I dont think Darkfall will 'die' anytime soon. Even EVE started out with less than 10k players and in Adventurine's case it was intentional. Always comedy reading knee jerk posts on these forums with no data; just emotions with lack of hard data indicating the developer is bankrupt.
