They had even less options.
I had a discussion with a friend of mine regarding releasing unfinished games, and he did follow the VG launch and played it at launch. According to him Vanguard devs did go out and say that they had to release a beta product as they ran out of funds. I never followed this launch myself, but it was commonly known amongst the MMO community VG was released due to them running out of money. And according to what my friend said they did openly admit they had to release due to no funds.
It is good they finally fixed the afk macroing, when I tried DF it was one of the things that annoyed me the amount of people doing this, my guildmates did it, the alliances did this. I mean there is groups of 200people using suspicious ways to increase their skills, you have afk macroing of combat skills, of rigor etc . If I wanted to compete with the rest I pretty much was forced to do the same.
Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC) On my radar: TSW, MO MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom

Actually.
The guys developing MO have already stated that they will be releasing before the game is 100% because they need the money.
Sigil did the same thing.
They made it pretty clear that the only reason they released when they did was because it was a now or never situation and they were out of money. Sigil made VG.
Av is the only MMO I've ever played at release that the lead developer/ head producer stated the game was 100% feature complete and ready, and nothing could be further from the truth.
I could have swore that Av was a publicly traded company?
If they are, they aren't indy. They have shareholders.
I can't believe how excited some of you guys are over a simple bugfix / exploit fix. Every MMO has these little gems patched multiple times a year. Many MMO companies don't even list them in their patch notes because they don't want to admit the exploit existed in the first place.
I mean, it's a no-brainer. I would have never guessed a game would let you level up on combat abilities without ever being in combat. That in itself was thinking outside the box, and has now been nerfed by AV to conform with WoW and all the other games you hate.
On second thought, this exploit fix is bogus. It's killing DF's uniqueness in the market. One more step towards WoW! Next thing you know, you'll have all your skillbased combat replaced by gearbased combat.
This change was needed but may actually drive off more than it attracts unless they really increased how fast you level off hitting real targets.
I actually disagree with this, and I don't think Av is going to get it right based on the comment Tasos said two weeks ago about the next fixes focussing on group content.
They need a LOT more solo mobs in the game.
People talk all the time about MMO's being a social game that should require grouping.
I do agree, but not for advancement.
You need to support solo play so that people can advance. There are a lot of people that need to come to terms with the fact that in any MMO there will be a much larger portion of people that want to be able to log in and not HAVE to find other people to play with in order to get ahead. DFO is no dif.
There are already complaints, not of the skill progression, but of people inability to get anyweres because the solo mobs are to congested with people now. I saw this coming and it was one of the first things I pointed out.
You have to HIT a valid target. Hitting something isn't hard. Finding things to hit is though.
Very few people are going to be willing to spend all that time finding other players to hit. Especially when that form of gameplay is more then likely to leave you broke or without weapons to gain skill off of.
In order to level you HAVE to fight NPC's.
The other problem is that when people group to go out "ganking" they aren't going to go to group spawns to do this. Frankly, that would be stupid. Group spawns means groups of players AND the mobs to contend with. That's not a smart way to PvP. You stack the odds to your favor and that means eliminating as much potential damage as possible. Fighting a group around solo mobs is better then around the group mobs.
Lastly. Solo mobs cut down on the exploiting.
People don't only exploit group mobs for drops, they are doing it to level.
It's easier to exploit a group mob then it is to find a place to grind solo mobs without constantly being molested, fighting over mobs, or having somone else steal your loot.
I was posting on the official forums months ago for them to change magic an archery so that it leveled when you hit a target, and at the same time greatly increase solo mob spawns to support the change. They only did the first half, cool, but it's a half assed fix that will cause more problems then it solves. Typical Av fashion. Quick fix with no thought about the impact it has on the rest of the game.
Also I want to point at there is a very good reason that they don't let people transfer beta characters to live servers.

You're watching it happen with every DFO patch.
