Hi guys,
I joined because this seems to be the best place on the internet to get this suggestion :-)
I am like I just said, sick of WOW! (got 3 70s and 1 80) Have had WOW account since 2005 launch. Want new MMO.
I like :
1. Lots of solo/quests. Enough quests to finish game without really grouping much
2. Love Scifi but will happily take a WOW type scenario too
Hate :
1. Any game that requires me to group/dungeon to advance to end game
For instance, with WOW, I basically quit after I lvled to the end with the 70s and the 1 80 since there wasn't much to do at that point having finished the game. I don't have the time to group and do dungeons etc and can't possibly arrange my schedule around this stuff. I don't enjoy that anyway...
Would appreciate any and all comments

My situation is much like yours... currently I'm just waiting for the right release... Star Wars, Star Trek, Aion, Mortal Online, and Champions. I'm hoping that at least one of those will be worth playing. There's just nothing out there right now that does it for me.
take a break for a while, theres a lot on the mmo horizon atm...if you like sci fi theres fallen earth or earthrise...Jumpgate evolution is coming out next month also if you like flying/action sort of games....then later on this year theres AION and Mortal Online, which i am eagerly awaiting. Fire up the XBOX or PS3 and just relax for a while. I just got back into Elder scrolls oblivion personally.....
Hello guys, Well for starters on a suggestion you could try one or two (maybe all) of the free mmos and see what takes to your liking. If you not too tired of Adventuring in Fantasy - try the LOTRO Trail, Conan if they still have one, City of Heroes.
Its pretty hard to make a suggestion, when you have be committed to one game for soo long.
But don't loose heart, I am sure there will be one out there (maybe more you never know) that briong you into a community of players that will hold you interest.
by the way I play Coh/CoV, AoC, LoTRO, Guild Wars, and I current ly am in the Beta for Champions, yes there are a few out there I am waiting on (doesn't take the brains of an ArchBishop to figure out which ones).
Good luck in your search.
I know it took me a while to find another MMO after I quit WoW early last year. There are a ton of choices out there, but at the moment there isn't one that meets both of your preferences that I know of. At least not yet.
LotRO meets your #1 preference easily. TONS of solo quests all the way to mid 50s at least, but it obviously doesn't meet your #2 preference. LotRO has spectacular scenery, good gameplay (although combat is not as "twitchy" as WoW) and a mature and dedicated community. Housing, crafting, mounts and PVP are pretty weak, but those might not matter to you.
You might also try Vanguard. From what I've read it had a horrible start, but has improved leaps and bounds since then. I recently started playing it several days ago, and it's quite impressive. The world is enormous and not instanced. Tons of quests. It has much deeper crafting than LotRO (or just about any MMO I've tried). The community from what I can tell is growing and dedicated. It's definitely a PVEers MMO. I'm not sure if you can solo through the whole thing since I only just started playing it.
You might even try EVE Online. It's got a learning curve from hell, but it can be quite fun if you like sandbox, PVP MMOs. It has PVE aspects, but the game really shines in the PVP area. You can solo all you want there, or join a corp and grow that way. The game universe is insanely huge, but repetitive. You can only have so many combinations of suns, planets and space clouds after all.
Anyway, those are my suggestions. Good luck in finding a new MMO!
Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
Had tried D&D Online, LotR, EvE-
I went over to Warhammer Online when it launched.
Lots of fun - lots to do.
Quests, Public quests (just walk up and participate - great XP and drops), RvR (PvP zones - great XP for taking and defending keeps and objectives), Scenarios and Dungeons.
2 days ago I cancelled my WoW subcription for 1st time since starting in 2005.
Adding to the preferences. I forgot to add, I do enjoy some solo PVP from time to time. WOW never had that in arena for instance and I really really hated that.
But Wow (pardon the pun) I thought this would be AOC AOC AOC seeing that the media says it's a distant but safe #2 behind WOW. I did look at the StarTrekOnline & SWTOR websites on madeux's suggestion and I can't wait for those 2 to be released (being a long time fan of both franchises :-)) .
But they both look to be far far away (hehe) since they aren't even in BETA yet :-(. Have been taking a break from MMOs since Jan BTW.
Regarding the suggested ones that are around -
COH - Checked out COH and looked OK but not sure, graphics look kinda choppy.
Guildwars - seems to always require a group for anything interesting and is the exact opposite of what I'm looking for :-)
Vanguard - looks to be really hated by all at least initially
Everquest - Did the EV 2 thing once and found it to be really boring. Just a worse version of WOW.
LOTRO - Leaning towards it right now but looks to be really really WOW-like?
Doesn't look like a clear winner is anywhere in sight yet? :-)
I played flyff for almost 4 yars now and it's really good hack and slash game, i like their events and th community... I'm currently playing atlantica for 5months now and still a lot to learn in the game but i can say that this turn based mmo is not just like other mmo because there's a unique features like: Free league, TOwn system, recruiting 9 mercenaries includig your main character, auto move function where players can easily go to their quest, Betting where players can bet on whos gonna win in the AI battles. and a lot more..
*** Atlantica Online***Reanemeiko*** Mycenae
('@') Oink!
To be completely honest what you're describing in this other MMO you want to play....well....that's pretty much WoW.
There's a bagillion wow-clones out there, not like it's hard to find one. You will never find a game where 1v1's actually mean a whole lot, mostly because no game is balanced around 1v1's. If you want to play WoW in a different skin you're just going to get bored, it won't do what WoW does as good and you'll have just wasted your money and will probably end up going back.
Just being honest here. Aion is pretty much what you're looking for, it's a very traditional RPG in many regards. I find it to be a lot more fun than WoW in many regards even with it not being anything much different. Unless you're wiling to jump through some very minor hoops to play on an eastern version of Aion then you'll just have to wait.
LotRO is supposedly a very solid PvE experience, there isn't a whole lot of focus on PvP though.
Ehhh besides that pretty much anything you're going to find that's on the market right now either isn't going to be your style or is going to be so much like WoW you'll just end up going back to it anyway.
My advice:
Go out and find all the free trials to anything that looks interesting to you or download some ftp's (free to play). Don't buy anything until your free trial is over, two weeks is usually enough time to make sure you aren't going to get bored of it at week three or four.
Don't be afraid to try out something different, you might find that you like it.
If you dont mind to wait Force of Arms a Scifi Mech based mmorpg is more than worth waiting for i cancled my eve and warhammer accounts. got so tired of the same old thing.
figured sence i liked mechwarrior and battletech so much this is the next logical step.
Decided to bite the bullet and download COH trial. Will have it in a couple hours. Will likely download LOTRO after that too.
From reading the literature the one that most SOUNDS like the one I would want will likely be SW:TOR but that is likely a Xmas release if we're lucky.
Report :
The graphics on COH were ghastly. Straight out of Doom/Wolf/any other first person shooter from the 90's! Can't bring myself to play that after WOW.
Will report on LOTRO and I guess AOC next.
There is absolutely nothing in the market right now, so you will be probably disappointed.
As myself looking for everything you are not looking for I can't find anything. Fantasy with group oriented content.
I am actually playing 'Lotro' but definitely a quest grind game.
Surprised by that, although CoH graphics are a bit dated and were intended to look comic bookish, I personally would say they are superior to WoW style graphics, which I really disliked and was convinced there must be some graphics settings I was clearly missing.
Anyway different tastes, will be interesting how you consider LOTRO graphics in comparison to WoW.
Nah COH graphics are not worth it. If you turn the sound on too you really feel like you're playing doom with the footstep sound effect etc.
I have decided to go with AOC next which is a bigger download. It's almost 4 AM so I will report back tomorrow on how it goes with AOC.
Play FFXI...its nothing like WoW, or LOTRO, or AoC, or CoH, or Guild Wars or anything even remotely close to everything else out there!
Its like nothing else, and you can beef the graphics up really nice for a 7yr old MMO, has a huge population that rivals all the previously mentioned MMOS and its not quest driven. You don't do mindless quest after mindless quest to lvl up, but they are there for reputation and there are also heavy storyline missions for each nation with personal cut-scenes! {Some are full blown CG scenes, but most are text and your character has an active roll in them}
FFXI is party enforced but its still possible to solo on all jobs for awhile {mid to late 20s}, and some all the way to 75! If you want something drastically different than the normal WoW experience which most MMOs nowadays are developed as or reverting too then FFXI is what you need to play!
Sounds like you'd perfer a single player RPG over a MMO. If you have a current generation console you could pick up various RPG titles like Fable II, Tales of Versperia, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls IV, Eternal Sonata, etc. These all meet your requirements.
I'd suggest starting with Mass Effect if you perfer the Sci-Fi theme. You can get it on the PC too if you don't have console.
What this poster said. This is exactly what I'm doing as there is nothing out their that interests me.

Been trying that for the past few months and 1P RPG are just not as good as they used to be too me! For one they're lonely as hell...surprisingly enough even though you play most MMOs kinda solo at times its nice to read what everyone else has to say good & bad. ...and two as far as the 360 goes, many of their better games require an HDTV to read the damn game and enjoy it. {They're still playable on SDTVs but the text is so small...anyway!}
Just sold off my Star Ocean and Tales of Vesperia, and thinking about selling the 360 too; very soon, and just invest in more PC parts for the upcoming MMOs in the next 2 years!
I'd give lotro a shot and play it smooth and slow just like smoking pipeweed!
just a quick suggestion on the 1 player RPGs, i felt the same way about them just not being as good anymore. i played the witcher enhanced edition and loved it, deffinatley worth a look.
At the same point as you m8.
Tried LoTRO but the patch download is a nightmare and even tho the trial was very interesting. Actually bought the game too but since customer support is close to nonexistant its back on the shelf.
Ran trials on MxO but that grew old within hours.
The old Everquest is what it is... old and it shows at first glance at the graphics. Addicting but ..tbh its ugly.
I ran EVE got caught by its beauty and complicity it really seemed to me like an adult MMO but it bugged me that i was sitting in a spaceship all the time. Did not get the feeling of personalization. Can imagine the addiction to the game after spending alot of hour to it tho. A traderaddicts game for sure.
DDO was pretty cool but the lack of population brought out down for my part.
Graphically GuildWars has and still is the strongest MMO but the simplycity made it so dull and ranks as kiddy MMO but the population is so very high. You will never feel alone.
Dont want to sound like an old grumphy man... but i AM! SWG WAS my personal favorite untill "they" killed it. Today SWG is a ghost of it geat past and more or less a WoW clone with lightsabres. Population is light on most servers. Graphics is allright but like in WoW after hitting level cap and doing endgame INSTANCES (ripoff) you stand around going "now what?" You DO however get your own home you can spend your gametime decorate. (Later adapted by SecondLife.*cough*)
Did actually try SecondLife but ...cant finish this sentence. Oh ye the full control you get from personalizing you character was fun. I ran around theese SecondLife addicts looking like an ogre and the singer from Jabba the Hutt's palace had a baby.. me.
Best surprise I had was a trial I ran on Ryzom. I'm not razorsharp but not 100% retard. The crafting in Ryzom got me hooked cuz it was so complicated and all items was of individual quality. As in not two items had the same stats. Graphics and combat was seen before and population was moderate. Havnt tried it since the latest patch tho.
My conclusion of the mentioned MMOs:
LoTR if patches was more userfriendly and it had actual support.
EVE and SWG for scifi geeks if You can settle with sitting in a ship all the time or run around in a WoW clone.
Ryzom is worth checking out since the latest patch has released trial accounts into the full game.
Personally I'm just waiting for Diablo III
Wumi
Wumi - SWG - Bloodfin - Cancelled
Wumi - WoW - Eu-Kazzak - Cancelled
Bulldozer - Aion - Eu-Kahrun - Cancelled
Wumi - Rift - EU-Riptalon - Cancelled
Felt like I should post this since the OP said he couldn't get used to the CoH graphics... you won't find another MMO that "feels" the same as WoW. The first few MMOs I tried after WoW I hated, including LotRO (closed beta). In fact, I hated most things about LotRO because it wasn't like WoW which I was comfortable with. The UI sucked. The characters looked boring. You moved slower than in WoW. There were no flying mounts. So on and so on.
To really give a game a chance, you need to spend at least a few days on it. Give yourself some time to get used to the game. The longer I stuck with LotRO, the more I realized how much I liked it. Of course, Turbine was refining the game over time too, but it really did grow on me.
After a while, and many MMOs later, I realized how simplified WoW was compared to most everything else. Sure it runs great and looks good on most comps, but it's boring and over-simplified, imo.
Anyway, enough preaching from me.

Just replying to all the comments. Not finished downloading AOC. It is so huge. Had to stop it at 60% because it was interfering with NBA live on Xbox 360 ;-) Will turn it back on and finish today.
My computer is about state of the art as it gets BTW (Intel i7 which would be the 8 core technically and quad core with dual threading in reality with 6 GB three channel ram and even SAS drives) so I intend to crank AOC up all the way when playing it and I expect the graphics to be better than WOW or so I've heard. We'll see.
KHRYMSON, I would look at FFXI but really don't wanna get involved with something that old. I expect the graphics to kinda suck and established communites of old timers playing. Not my thing. I totally agree with you about 1 RP being lonely. You do miss general chat etc when you play first person RP though. Even if I am not crazy about interacting with others I still like to be in a virtual world surrounded by real people so I do want a MMO in the end.
Even though I am a scifi kinda guy I enjoyed the heck out of Godfather a couple years ago but then I finished it and that was it. I bought James Bond etc. afer that but none of them were the same. Godfather was uniquely good in the realism of mid 20th century NY and freedom with which you could do quests but forget that and do pretty much whatever for however long too and still advance in the game. Just a great game. If anyone knows anything similar out there tell me :-). Will look at Magnum's suggestions too.
Wumi, know what you mean about SWG. I neglected to mention I played it for awhile but then stopped as the game really ran out of content and expected me to be waaaaay too repetetive.
Well to the OP... the thing about WoW is it was the most tactical MMORPG to ever come out on the market combatwise. You have to use strategy and tactical elements whereas a game like LOTRO might just let you roll your face on the keyboard and you would probably kill a zerg of a pull... course the fellowship raids could add some difficulty to the game but really in the right fellowships I assume you can just faceroll there too if you're a DPS class... and you said you didn't want to raid....
I think if the OP wants an MMO to play it has to be like WoW in terms of tacticalness and I don't know what to recommend as no MMORPGs I've played are like this.
I've tried Age of Conan, LOTRO, WAR, EQ2, EVE, and Guild Wars.
Well.. Dark Age of Camelot comes close if you don't mind not being able to strafe, people macro-sticking and the graphics are dated.
Age of Conan is just pushing the arrow keys and making sure your enemy was in front of you on time to use your attack.
WAR has awful rim lighting on everything and mist everywhere - just awful looking graphics - and it can still lag! To make things worse the amount of players is dwindling and the DPS classes are definitely not tactical as you can pretty much faceroll on your keyboard there too.
EQ2 was just awkward.
EVE is more of a flight simulation game imo.
and Guild Wars is more about making up the right builds and putting lots and lots of stupid kids on your ignore list.
