The game isn't just as much popular as the higher rated ones. Remember that this rating doesn't tell you which game is better. Just which game has more fans that give it high rating.
There's also the case of WoW fanbois vs. EQ2 fanbois who rate their game vey high and the other one very low. As you can see, WoW has just more.
Ratings can be easily skewed as others in this thread have pointed out. If you really want to know what the game is like buy it. $50 US and see for yourself. I am playing it concurently with WoW and rate the 2 games overall about equal. WoW has PvP, EQII does not. EQII has more stable servers than WoW and has the better graphics. Otherwise the games are remarkably the same as far as overall gameplay goes. Both are good however neither is remarkable. I rate each about a 8.0 overall, but that is just my opinion.
LOL whats even funnier about WoWs rating is if you go over to the WoW official forums you have to wear welding goggles to protect your eyes from the flames they are tossing at Blizzard. Off topic here but I hated EQ1 which is why I was so surprised tha I love EQII.

I agree I couldn't stand EQ1. I've played WoW for over 2 months throughout the beta and loved it! but once I tried EQ2 beta I was hooked and just tossed WoW into my Recycle Bin. It doesnt have PVP yet which it will hopefully soon... but I can deal with it I'm having more fun with my guild house.
The biggest reason why EQ2 has a bad rating is because it has so many haters.
Any EQ-haters, SWG-haters, or just SOE-haters are going to give it a 1, regardless of whether they played it or not. And of course WoW fanbois will give it a 1, too.
There aren't many Blizzard-haters, or NCSoft haters, etc.. so EQ2 is up against alot. :P

One major difference I've noticed between the two games is that one is geared much more towards the older spectrum of the mmorpg population than the other. If you havn't guessed it yet, EQ2 has many more older (in my opinion, more mature) players who *this may just be generalization* arn't going to rate a game they have never played and won't create an endless stream of flame threads about a game they have never played or even seen. BTW: I have nothing against WoW, but EQ2 is just my preference.

not many NCSoft haters? anyone that has ever played lineage 2 (like myself) will tell you how much they hate NCSoft. they let thier game be ruined and did nothing!
No kidding man. I will NEVER touch another NCsoft game after my L2 experience. It almost seemed like they encouraged people to ruin their game. I never saw them do one thing to put halt to all the BS. I jumped ship as soon as I saw how NCsoft "handled" issues in the game.

I've never personally hated no company as much as I hate NCSoft. That doesn't mean that I'd bash any games under their flag, just the ones that suck eggs - which means Lineage 2 and CoH. Anyone trying to sell me pure crap in a pretty package deserves all the spite I can generate.
Comparing EQ2 and EVE (which currently has more fanboi points in mmorpg.com), I can sort of easily understand why EVE does well. After all, it has something new and original, whereas EQII was ten years old even before it was published. This is not meant as an offense, I just don't see anything in EQII but same stuff all over again, in a prettier wrappings. Same goes for WoW, and for most MMORPGs in general.

Many say WoW is MMORPG -lite, for all those who just don't have the time or energy to spend a huge amount of time on (of course the hardcore players are also catered for, how well is up to judgement) or those new to the genre. Not having time category includes people with jobs, tight study schedules, limited access to the internet or to a computer, etc. The new to the genre category includes (unfortunately) kiddies, bored housewives and whomever hasn't played mmorpgs (and is sucked in by the excellent reviews WoW is getting and the dry season that seems to be affecting PC games) in general. I've met hundreds of seasoned MMORPG veterans that have chosen WoW because they just don't have the time to grind as long as is needed for more conventional MMORPGs. Whether or not maturity is involved here, or in many of the other cases (considering most people do NOT have the time to constantly grind) is questionable. Immaturity is involved when some guy just wants to pick a fight on the forums, whether it be a fanboi of WoW or FFXI. Immaturity is also involved when people go on to label others immature and "children" just because they happen to prefer one game over the other. I do not consider EQ2 posters immature, as long as they do not come and (like many WoW fanbois have also done) bash a game I like to the ground when they haven't even played it or label the WoW community a bunch of kiddies based on limited knowledge.
