Hey guys i have tried EVE about 5 times throughout the years lol. I love the concept and it sounds so perfect, i understand the basics such as quest completion and navigation but other than that im lost. I want to get into it but i need help creating a character and setting my guy up in game.. i want to be purely a military based character and ferocious in PvP. I would appreciate if a veteran could guide me in character creation and setting up my ship along with some long term advice on equipment and skills. Thanks all !

Hehe I have had exactly the same, just stopped after 1 or 2 weeks. But I really love the concept. Only difference with me is that I love the trade system and stuff like that. Would really appreciate help too
Well they Nerfed chars back to almost no skills But for a Short time (Till like 1.5mill SP) you get Double Training.
So any Char will have almost a Equil start atm.

Dont be affraid to ask Questions. there are Lots of corps and players out there that will gladly teach you. Most inportant thing Is to Decide what to Do and Stick to It.
OH and DON'T, DON'T, DON'T train Learning skills. Train them every OTHER skill. It will slow you down a little But your SO Totaly Fucked If you lissen to people saying to spam them Now. The 2 Weeks Would be better spent haveing Fun getting Teir One Frigates to not suck anymore.
Dont get me Wrong The ARE needed But just not Right out of the Shoot.

What is classified as a "learning skill"?
I may have went the wrong way - I dunno :X
I'm in the same boat; tried the game before and found it a bit intimidating and hard to get started in. This time around I'm hoping to do a bit better.
Cammy- Learning skills are skills like, Instant Recall, Analytical mind, and Learning. Depending upon the skill they seem to either boost one of your mental stats for each level you have in that skill, or in the case of Learning, add a 2% bonus to all of your stats for each level you have in Learning.
I had to buy the skills off the market, I don't think you can start out with them.
Correct.
I started (for the second time, lol; first go was in 2007) and have found I enjoy it alot more than I did the first time. My only real hangup was the real timed based skill advancement, but I'm over that now. So, yeah, started May 6th and Friday (May 22) by noon I will have had all my Learning Skills execpt Presence (Charisma +1) trained to level 4 (Presence will be at 3 with a day and 7ish hours to train to 4)
You'll see it said time and again, but train those Learning skills up first. It may seem boring as you don't get to train the "interesting" skills, but it is important to take advantage of the 100% training time modifier for your first 1.6 million SP (Skill Points). Looking at the training times for my skills now I can certainly see how drastic the training time will be (2 X the listed time now) once that 100% modifier is gone. And since the Learning Skills decrease the training time for ALL OTHER SKILLS, it's wise to get them out of the way with a reduces time cost.
Additionally, while training those Learning skills it does not mean you can't "play the game". I have trained a few other skills along the way to level 2 or 3 and am currently in a Destroyer. I've completed the Epic quest arc (though I did have assistance with two parts killing two of the final heavy hitters) and have gained enough faction that I'm running level 2 missions now. If running missions I'd suggest training up to use a Salvager I. You can make very decent money for a new player salvaging wrecks (the Civilan Salvager you get only works in the one tutorial mission you get it for). Oh, which reminds me:
I don't care how "l337" you think you are, do the tutorials.
The amount of information, if you do them and pay attention, about how/what you can do in EvE is very helpful. I can easily say out of all the MMOs I've played since the late 90s, EvE has the highest learning curve. Do the missions for all 3 Career Agents at your beginning station. Not only do you get knowledge, but you get free stuff that can help you.
Below are some sites you may/may not find useful. I reference the Wiki often as the EvE GMs help update the site. I use the forums at Battle Clinic to check out loadouts of different types of ships that people are using. I've seen many people mention EvE Uni. so if you want hands on mentoring they might be a good place to look. I'm not in their corp, by the way, so no ulterior motives.
EvE Wiki - Good for all around general information
Battle Clinic - Forums good for ship fittings (the stuff you put on your ship to enhance it) information
EvE University - Good information on site. This group/corporation, if I understand correctly, is big on helping newbies.

Thanks for the clarification
My first skills I've been going with are science, industry, mining, etc...
I wanted to get the pre-reqs up to lvl 4 so that I can start using the better space ships
Is this the right choice? This is my first EVE char, so Im not sure if I went the right route.
I got a suggestion.
I tried EvE Online 6 times too, before I got into it. My problem was, I specialized too much and too early.
I suggest picking up abit from everything. EvE online is a great game, but everything gets boring when you do it alot. So, if you are a gamer that plays atleast 2 hours a day or something, or find stuff quickly boring.. do multiple things.
I am at this time a tackler (pvp), mission runner, miner, industrialist, and beginning to trade. It is alot, and my skills are pretty much everywhere atm, but it gives me alot to do. And that, makes the game fun. The complete freedom.

Awesome, thank you for that link.
Based on those, I assume I should go grab learning first? Would that make the most sense?
Are there any others that are "must haves"?

Learning skills are awesome investments but at the same time don't get hung up on training them up to decent levels quickly. Focus on having fun first and when you know you are going ot stick with the game a little while then train those learning skills up. There is a tradeoff on time spent training learning skills and how long it will take to see that time ivested pay back on the reduction of train time on other skills.

You'll see a good return on your investment early by training the basic learning skills to level 4 and the more advanced one then to 3 (you could probably skip Charisma for now). As you go on, training the first rank skills to level 5 and the second rank skills to 4 will help in the long run but you need to play for awhile to see them actually help you.
EVEMon will recommend training skills for you to learn but I recommend putting 3+ months of training on there for a new player, otherwise it'll only recommend the first few levels of the learning skills. Also, +2 and +3 implants are very cheap, you should look at acquiring those as well.
If you want to min/max your time played/sp then by all means train those learning skills, it's very much worth it. If however you would rather train up some basic skills that increase your early fun levels then leave those training skills for a week or two and really get to enjoy the game. Go ahead and train up the basic ones to 3 though, even the charisma one if you plan on doing missions and levelling the skills that increase your bonus from missions.
Thanks for the tip
Am I able to send money to myself through the same account?
Im wondering, I am considering creating a new char to start out with again now that I know what the hell Im doing Is that worthwhile? I don't want to loose the money I currently have... am I able to make a new char and send all the old money to that character (which really, I'd only lose my new skills trained)
Then I could start off doing things the right way... my first char, as you can imagine... I made a mess of myself
Also on that note, Im curious which starting race/faction has the best mining ships that are available... or does it matter in the end?
Yes you can send all your money to an alt on the same account.
My question though is what did you mess up so bad you feel the need to start over ? I really don't think you could have done anything that drastic.
Mmm honestly its just training things that probably aren't all that useful.. not to mention I had no idea what was doing so I ended up spending on things that just weren't necessary..
Thats basically why I asked
Honestly Im really not far into it where starting over is a big deal.. I've probably only logged 5 hours into it and half of that time was me floating around in my ship wondering what Im doing....
So I was mostly just curious on if that was a viable option....
I think this time through, I would get learning skilled up first, and then my ship specialization, then any other pre-req's on those ships so that I could have a much easier time doing the things I enjoy... I had a hard time with that at first, and now my skills are taking quite a while to play catch up
Don't start over. Unless you got really high charisma as an attribute or you want to start a different race it's just not worth it. Just start doing what you would do if you started over now.
Truthfully, I was also half considering starting a new race - but I am not sure which one has strengths towards mining (which is so far the thing I like to do most)...
I may do some research first and check it out Starting over isn't a big deal for me at all... I do that in almost every game I play once I figure out the ropes on what Im doing lol!

Starting over wouldn't gain you that much. It would be better to start training the things you need to train on the character you have now. The skills you already trained may become useful later and you'd only have to retrain them if you start anothe character.

No race has any advantage in any area of the game other than the starting weapons systems, there is no racial bonus though.
So if you like lasers pick Amarr, missiles and hybrid weapons pick Caldari, drones and hybrids Gallente or for projectiles along with a little bit of everything else for good measure pick Minmatar.

Another question if I may...
What is the difference between a hauler and a miner? The most frustrating thing for me as a miner is I NEVER have enough cargo space... even with the expanded containers.
So, would something like a Mammoth be better served as that type of vessel or am I really grasping at the wrong ideas here?
industrial or exhumers can have 4k of cargo capacity easily.....first thing i would do is train those
