Well, I'm looking for an MMO (as you might imagine). I don't care if it's paid or not, or if it even has to be bought up front. Free is nice, but in my experience paid sees to have the quaity advantages. What am I looking for? Really, just a good game, but nothing too grindy. I could go either way on good/easy crafting, as long as the crafting system isn't completely reliant on others and can actually be semi-profitable. My big thing is that I don't enjoy open PVP, just not really into it; I like doing it occasionally, but I do not like getting "ganked".
Here's my experience and commentary.
UO - Loved everything about it but the community and the fact that if I wasn't a strong fighter, I was going to die a lot.
EQ - Probably my favorite MMO, I got to the high end raiding content and just sort of got tired of it eventually. Like the crafting and combat, might have been a bit too group heavy. Was a good game in hindsight but I don't think it has aged well, so I don't plan on going back. This is probably my only MMO where I was satisfied upon leaving.
FFXI - Way too group heavy and it would always take me 75% of my play time to even find a group. I haven't played it much since the US release.
DAOC - Been forever since I played it, I liked the game, but I got disenfanchised by some pretty heavy handed nerfs early on. Don't think it's aged well at this point either.
WOW - I have mixed feelings. I love the art design and the class selection, but the game seems to get boring. I have yet to experience the high end content, but I have a level 77. I seem to be off and on, trying to find a better game if one exists. Should I just tough it out and try the high end content? After being a hardcore EQ1 raider, I'm just not sure if I'll feel challenged or satisfied by the raid content.
Maple Story - I like the art style a bit, but otherwise the game has problems. The community is pretty bad and it seems like customization and individuality of skill sets are punished. Seems to turn into a grind fest quickly.
Atlantica Online - I really like the innovation, and I frankly imagined such an idea when I was younger. Unfortunately while It's rife with good ideas, I'm unsure about the execution. I'm thinking of giving it another shot, I just wish you could customize your individual warriors, I really feel no connection to my party and everything is samey.
Aion - I tried out the Chinese beta version, and I'm looking forward to the game. Unfortunately I don't have any way to purchase an account overseas. If this game was out in the US I would probably play it now. Soloing as a mage was a bit troublesome with the downtime though. I do wish there was more class diversity though, but a beautiful game.
COX - I liked it a lot, but it seems to have petered out a bit recently. I really like superhero style stuff, but I think the game could have been better executed. I really like the effort the developers have put into the game, but from what I have read the effort has backfired a bit lately. Any input? I really haven't tried the game since right after COV was released. I'm really looking forward to Champions, maybe this would be a good game to fill in the time.
Everquest 2 - For a while I heard this was "the" MMORPG, but it seems time has not done it justice and the community seems to have turned on it a bit because of recenet expansions or lack of new content. I've been thinking about trying it again, any advice?
Vanguard - Unsure, seems like EQ2 a bit to me, and I really don't see the problems everyone talks about. My big issue is that it runs pretty terribly on my system even though I can run modern PC games at max settings with my brand new computer. I'm iffy about diplomacy system as well, but maybe I don't really understand it, but crafting seems cool.
EVE - Beautiful, runs smoothly. I wish there was a way to quene up skill training, I really didn't like having to log on frequently to change my skills or have third party skill managers notifying me when training was done. Unfortunately, I think the game experience is hindered if you aren't in a powerful corp, I lost everything just trying to get out into low sec space since an entire corporation just killed everyone who tried to get out of the system. I lost my brand new ship, and even with insurance I was broke and basically had to start over with the exception of my skills. I think my anti-open pvp thing makes progressing far in this game basically impossible. I really like the ideas though.
I've tried a few others, F2P games and a couple other paid ones, most of which I got tired with in the course of a day or less.

Can't really help you much, seems like you played most of the "better" games, im looking for one to play too, but i've almost given up, just waiting for EU release of Aion, and the release of MO.
Currently just playing CoD4 for timezink...
Looks like youre a pretty well rounded player.......I dont know if I would return to EQ2 if I was you......I used to play for a few months then got bored with it right before RoK came out......You can certainly try it again but IMO its nothing special.......Since you played UO and EQ have you considered Anarchy Online??....The problem that most players have with it is that they dont like the graphics but if you dont demand perfect graphics its a pretty good game.....it has excellent character customization and skill system......It has a higher learning curve than most games but youre an experienced gamer so it would not affect you as much as others with less experience......Its a sci fi based game so you get a break from the fantasy genre......If you havent tried it you might want to give it a go, especially since the basic game is free (you pay a monthly if you want to play expansions)........Im not going ot recommend LoTRO or RoM because you have already played games almost identical to them so they wouldnt be anything new to you......
Give Guild Wars a try if you don't mind the instance type games.
guildwars.
a few things to note tho:
1. most of ppl that still play beat the game a couple of times and go to missions just for achievement/skillpoint. thus there is not much challenge in early missions etc with those max lvl players with good gear.
2. most of newbies have no clue about the game. no clue as in - not using their brain at all.
3. best to play with atleast one good friend. otherwise it can get boring. then again every mmo gets boring if you feel alone.
thats pretty much it i guess.
Yea, I knew I was forgtetting some games. I played AO for quite a while after it was released, I just never got into it. I thought it was a great game, but I really just never got into it for some reason, maybe it was the PVP. I stuck to the PVE content as much as I could, but PVP zones made things difficult for a broke newbie. I eventually came back after the newbie sewer content was released and made a new character and scalped the low level drops the high levels wanted, I raked in frankly rediculous amounts of cash, and was so rich I never really ahd anything to shoot for after that. By that point the game had already aged a bit for me, I don't see myself going back.
As far as Guild Wars goes, I totally forgot about that one. I do have the base game, I just kind of got busy with life and never gave it a fair shake. Is it worth picking up the expansions? My only ever issue with the game was a general lack of customization, since it seemed all the armors looked alike.
Unfortunately, all my RL friends are either playing other MMOs or have sworn them off completely.
just wait a while longer for games like Force of Arms or Earth Rise both seem to be somthing new that we are craving.
In Guild Wars you can change the color of your armor as you like, mix dyes to create a new color...you can even change the color of your wepon. There are tons of armor sets in game for each class, as far as customization goes, I think guild wars has it all.
Have you tried LOTR?
Not sure if this promotion is still on but you could get it for $9.99 a month. I am really enjoying it.
I have a copy, I played it at launch, but I've never been into the franchise much and I thought the game was a bit slow. I'd be willing to give it a shot again though if a lot has changed.
Sorry for posting such an incomplete list, I've played a ton of MMORPGs. Ones I didn't list: Asheron's Call 1 and 2, RF Online, Matrix Online, Sims Online, Planetside, Second Life, Ryzom, SWG (pre big update), Warhammer Online, Chronicles of Spellborn, Phantasy Star Online/Universe, Ragnarok Online. That should be all of them except some really terrible free to play ones that I repressed.
I just realized I've played a ton of MMORPGs.
Lol you sound like me. I am an older gamer and have played practically everything. Way to many to list and some I would rather forget.
There have been quite a few changes made in LOTR, but of course you would have to try it out for yourself. I know not everyone likes it (but that's like any game out there). I would recommend trying it out though.
Hope you find a game you like.
P.S I am waiting for AION as well. Hope it comes out soon.
You've played a helluva lot of MMOs, perhaps thats your problem - or the problem of MMOs in general I'll let you make up your mind on that one. I've played Everquest way back and I feel that the basic content and skill system are basically the same with some variations and nicer graphics. Personally I don't think it matters what game you choose, since you seemed to be bored with the whole genre in general. Perhaps its time to find a new hobby.
I'm definitely not, I'm just continually trying to find something better. I decided to try City of Heroes again, enjoying it enough at the moment. I figure I can always bounce between the old stuff until the new games suface. I like MMORPGs due to the community and relatively low cost gaming.
Honestly ,with your MMObackround, the best thing to do atm is to take a break bc i highly doubt you will find anything that will satisfy you longer than 1-2 weeks. Atm im 'MMO-less' too and sadly theres nothing out there id find worth playing.
