Vanguard will always be a sort of hate-love for me. It has a few REALLY great aspects, which regularly draw me in to try it out, and some really bad ones which drive me as regularly away. Netto, the game is IMVPO as good or bad as it was one year ago. If you loved it then you love it now, if you didnt, you wont now.
Sure, SOE did some good work to improve the game. But the overall experience is by and large very much the same. I love the vast open world and the interesting classes. Never seen some class I liked as much as my Disciple in any MMO. The visuals are also quite great IMO.
Now the good news is: the rumors that the game is empty is just untrue. I found enough people throughout the game, and it was not really easy but suffieciently easy to find a group. At least above 18/20 or so. Low levels tend to solo or duo a lot. The Isle of Dawn is a blast, but it give a sort of false impression on the quality. The game is just way too vast to rework it all. And boy, there would be NEED.
I just had finished my "kill 50 Wolf-men" (name??), returned and getting 30 copper for a level 30 quest is just hilarious. More hilarious was the fact that the NPC said "oh thank you, now go and kill 100 Wolf-Men" as the next quest. Why not hand out one big quest, kill 10000 Wolf-Men and spare me the hassle of returning all the time? Really. And there are still by and large way too many of these. Not that WOW or EQ2 are so much more creative, but a BIT more. VG still is very very depressing when it comes to questing. On top, while LOTRO is way to fast with levelling, VG still is clearly way to slow. Griding is a chore beyond 25, even when doing tough mobs, and going to a Dungeon still has the danger to loose substatial XP with your death, since summoning back the tomb is stil a way above par XP loss, compared to what people today expect.
Besides, beyond level 15 you can FORGET soloing. I mean, you can solo. But it is so unbeliebably slow and dull, drilling holes into you kneecap is exciting compared to that.
The animations look overall much better now, and the diversity in armour and gear had made a good leap forward. Still, unless you make VG gaming a very time consuming effort, you wont see a lot of stuff. Flying mounts are for hardcore players only, as are houses and ships. Never understood why flying mounts are for endgame level only, when you dont need that thing anyway. When I am level 50... or 55 now, the game is over in VG. Or in most MMOs. It is one of these EQ-era ideologies I never shared to leave everything interesting to max level players. (See LOTRO-PVP. Something I loathed about LOTRO.) I always thought every bit of a MMO should in some lower version be present in early levels. Like the EQ2 housing. Or the grounded mounts of VG. Limiting a certain stuff to endgame hardcore players just makes normal players feel 2nd best, and thats not appealing these days for so many ppl.
My biggest gripe still remain to be those deadly dungeons. VG dungeons are HUGE, and filled to the rim with nameless critters UBER fast respawn and woe to you should you wipe in any of those low levels. You can easily lose the XP of an entire evening of hard work with a few bad placed deaths. I never shared the idea of death penalities. Ppl should not be penalized for playing a game. Period. You can encourage them to stay alive by bonus XP, if you must, but I never liked the idea of penalities. RL is full enough of that.
Finally, beyond level 15 you can still get very much lost. You can find people in various places, but it kinda lacks a coherence and feeling of "advancing through an overall story". You cherry pick quests all over the world as it comes, and I never felt like "opening that carpet of stories and places" like in other MMOs. Like some giant went through Telon and dropped quests here and there. The reworked places are really better, but people naturally dont cling to those 3 or 4 reworked places, so you have to take your groups as they come.
Finally at least for me it lags just the same as a year ago.
VG remains one of the greatest "could have beens" in MMO history. It has improved, but no dramatic turnover I can see.

That's not true, you can use temprary flying mounts since lvl 1. Houses are not that expensive, you can have one for about 30-60 gold pieces, and building a boat is not that hard or expensive, i got my caravel by lvl 30 and if you are willing to craft you can build a sloop as a lvl 20-25 artificer(is not that hard to do, at least compared with lvl 20 adventurer) or buy one in the broker for about 40-50 gold, that's not unreachable for a lvl 30 player, yeah it may take a little farming to get the money, but under no means is only meant for high level players.
I use my flying mounts all the time.
And yes, they are hard to get, thats true.
Wyven is downright simple if you have a good raiding guild though.
Pegasus ... well its a lot of plats, but in principle you can get that one solo. Very slow though.
Well about ships, I can build those myself, still they are on broker for what ? 25, 35 gold or some such ? I dont think thats just hardcore endgame players.
Unless you only want to count Galleons as ships. Well, I myself havent even bothered to get one. But a simple sloop works nicely most of the time, and my mains get caravels for the additional chunk of speed.
And about houses, everyone has one. Unless you're really, really, really lazy.

Grab a brain . the quest is for gaining rep. It was put in for people that are waiting for a group for Thel So you can solo up some rep Its no different than grinding rep in any mmo out there. So they put in a little kill quest for solo people no one said you had to do it .
As far as dungeons go like I said grab a brain.
Elikal what game did you play?, because from your review it most certainly doesn't sound like the game I play.
Flying mounts are useable from level 1-55 by anyone, so no you DONT have to be a hardcore raider.
That Kill quest that you were sent to kill 50 Dogs, was for grinding faction rep for an armor quest chain that is great at level 30+.
Dungeons are by far the best asset to Vanguard, they are huge and beautiful, they also yield great experience. If you were to die and not be able to get your tombstone back you would EASILY gain that lost XP within 10-20mins in a dungeon.
Experience gain is way to fast in this game for my liking. I know people that leveled 1-50 in 2 weeks playing around 3 hrs MAX a day. You call that slow?
Boats are crafted by players, for a Tier 1 boat they can be purchased for around 20-30g, or you could harvest the materials yourself and get a crafter to make it for you, or better still become a crafter and build it yourself.
The new content that has been added with the latest patch is great, there are some bugs and overlooked mechanics that went onto the live servers, but the developers are listening to the community and trying to work on these things.
This game doesn't offer "phat lewets" on a plate, but it does offer a sense achievement.
Every single thing you listed as negative sounds very cool and positive to me. Death shall have penalty otherwise people dont learn to play till last level. Leveling shall be slow to prevent reaching endgame fast. Dungeons should be deep, dangerous and huge. Looks like you shall play some more casual games to learn to love journey instead of destination.
I was able to pick up a copy for me and a freind this week, really cheep, so we spent a day on it. I have played a lot of MMos I and I like what I see so far.

I'm not looking for fanboy opinions here. I have level 9 and 10 characters on the island and I want to know what the game is like later on. I have enough experience with MMOs already to know I don't want to spend another 6 months of my free time trying to fit a round peg into a square hole.

Opinions. I think that the poster gave you an explanation on why that kill quest is there. Maybe abit rude about it, but still hardly not a opinion. Why not make a descent thread or post about what you want to know?
How did you like the crafting, how did you like diplomacy. If not already done so check that out.

"You have the right not to be killed"
This quest is meant to be a faster way to increase your faction to get the armor quests. So would you rather kill 50 or 100 bloodhowlers and get 50-100 faction points or do the damn quest and get 50-100 faction points + 500 bonus points for doing the quest? Not only that you get Extra experience points. Faction has a big role in VG, and its really a grind building them up, but I dont know why people would not do quests to improve faction, its just common sense. The best way to build faction faster is to start going to Wardship of the Sleeping Moon zone early at around 24-26 and kill the bloodhowlers. You will be getting more exp because they are higher level and also start early on collecting all the pieces required for getting the armor pieces.
DYNAMIC Faction (its based off from looking at your DIPLOMACY faction ratings in the diplomacy tab) to make your armor are:
Tier 1 = 3k = for belt gloves and bracer
Tier 2 = 6k for reinforcements boots and helm
Tier 3 = 11k for Shoulder chest and leggings
Weapon quest = 15k

Do you like the island? Then subscribe.. there is no cost for the game other than the monthly fee... I liked the island and after I subscribed the game did not get worse, I'm a level 23 bard on Seradon and I've been playing for a week - I like the game A LOT.. I've grouped with many great people that play the game to have fun just like me.. no one rages after a death even with the penalty. Sub for a month and find out yourself
Meh, also I have to add the game is laggy as on Day 1. I have the same computer since then (just was new and top back then), and even a recent total re-install of the system, so all is clean and in top shape. Still, the game alas lags as hell to me. I didnt see any progress as to compared what I knew.

What settings are you running at? And did you try tweaking with your vgclient.ini file? After I tweaked with mine, I've been running at 1920x1200 50-60 fps no problem, dipping down into the 30s when there's lot of people.
The only place I lag now is when crossing chunk lines which is kind of annoying.
Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
Some tweaking will help, but if one is using a single-core processor and/or less than 2 gigs of ram they will have to run on the lower settings to avoid lag. Chunk times have increased for everyone because of the larger number of people playing now. If you chunk into an empty zone, it goes pretty quick, but if you chunk into a zone with 70 people is slows down.
I'm thinking of going to Windows 7.... I've heard that has eliminated hitching for a number of people.
True. Tweaking will only get you so far if your hardware's not up to snuff.
Most of the things I've read about Windows 7 is good, but I'm going to wait until it's actually released before buying it. Skip Vista altogether. Plus, it should be able to see all my 4GB of RAM now instead of just 2.7. That'll be a nice bump.

I think that I have been quite positive against VG performance and with Vista performance. For instance I have alot of times said that I get better performance with Vista than what I did with XP.
But comparing Vista against Windows 7 I hardly notice any difference in performance for games. Could be that the computer starts abit faster, maybe some programs are more responsive but nothing that makes my day anything different. Just bla bla bla bla.
But Windows 7 is free to test out and I could recommend that you do.

I've downloaded Windows 7, but haven't installed yet. I currently run Vista 32 with 4 gigs of ram. I'm going to upgrade from 4 to 8 gigs of ram and then give it awhirl. What are you running Windows 7 with in terms of ram?

When they were handing out brains I could have sworn they said trains so I missed mine )~

I'm running on vista ultimate 64 and VG really seems to run well under that OS. Most of the time I'm getting around 40+ fps on max settings and hitching is very brief almost so brief as I wouldn't really even make note of it if I didn't know what it was. Even in the worst areas in cities with lots of people around I never drop below 20fps. My computer was pretty top of the line 2 years ago, today it is probably average.
I play eq2 a lot on the same computer and find that I'm getting around 20fps on high quality and when I raid I gotta drop it down to low quality or my fps becomes unplayable. It is kinda hard to really say what my settings are in EQ2 since I use the presets in the profit UI. They have 3 settings, quality, performance, raid. I find quality is ok in most areas but drops below 20fps in some zones. I switch to performance which still looks pretty good and get back up into the 20-30 range. Also in eq2 certain zones are worse then others. Like in Antonica I'll be getting around 40 fps but enchanted lands or greater feydark will give me 20fps.
