Nope it does not, both games aren't exactly an innovation in the MMORPG genre.

I'd give WoW an 8.2, and EQ2 and 8.3, personally.
The reviewer actually points out that the game isn't innovative, and still gives it 9.5.
If games were rated on innovation then every FPS after Deus Ex would score around 7.

Where was EQ2 rated 9.1? Certainly not on Gamespot where the official review rating is 7.8 and the community rating (the one that really matters) is a dismal 6.9.
That's weird, I could have sworn it was 9.1 and Superb rating when I read it directly after the first WoW 9.5 thread

everyone that said wow isnt innovative is right ... but keep in mind that this wasnt the plan maybe ... blizzard took the best from every mmorpg out there and polished it to the maximum ... why should they add new & innovative stuff when there isnt any mmorpg out there that made the step to perfectionate their game mechanics ... (i think/hope) next step for wow will be innovative stuff they just wanted to show their customers hey what company xyz can (and has to work hard to get it working) is np at all for us!
and noone that really played wow for more then a day can argument against the fact (not a opinion) that wow runs so smooth and everything you do is so perfect thought out and balanced that its amazing to play (the cartoon gfx etc dosent count here because you like it or not) but good game mechanics arent argumentable
oh and thats said from someone that played almost everything that had a open beta & many closed betas and everytime i found atleast 2-3 things that i would change but wow is perfekt (game mechanics)
btw if you find a typo ... keep and feed it every day plz ;P

I agree with what you are saying. However, I think whatever staff reviewed this game had probably started playing at Open Beta, if not sooner. I'm sure they got past level 15 and saw at least half the game. Although your oppinion is just as valid as my guess, i'm not positive but my guess is that they had most likely got past level 30.
just like i said in another thread where people were saying things like that the reviewers thought WoW was better than Halo 2 etc etc..... A reviewer compares a game to other games of the SAME GENRE so you can't compare the rating a schooter got to the rating WoW got because the type of games are totally different.

I would not give either game anything above a 8.5 seriously. Neither one brings anything remarkably different to the table of MMORPG's. Both are just shinier polished versions of what has already been done. On the other hand both are fun in thier own way.
I know I am gonna get slammed for this but I cannot see WoW being a long term game for me. It is simply too easy to level and solo. That is a large part of the games draw for me yet conversly will cause me to go bleh in 3 or 4 months. So I have quit playing WoW for the moment (I was playing on my brothers account) and will either take over his account when he gets tired of it and buys his own EQII box or will buy my own in a few months when the shiny wears off EQII.
Anyway I agree that both games are really overhyped and over rated. Both are good but neither are excellent. 8.0 - 8.5 is a good honest non fanbois rating for both in my opinion.
I agree with Gamespot completely. I have trusted their reviews for ages and have actualy based decisions whether to buy a game or not on them.
This game is the most amazing MMO I have ever played. And yes, I've played about all of them....
UO, EQ, SWG, Earth and Beyond, Horizons, Guild Wars (trail so that could still improve) , DaOC, Knight Online, Planetside, Saga of Ryzom beta, Ragnarok Online
I no longer need to play any more.
WoW is the best I have seen yet.
I LOVED UO and WoW is bringing back the fun I had with that game.
I've never been a fan od MMORPG's but WoW has changed my opinion. I love this game, but no game is perfect. I think 9.5 is a fair and good rating. Although I have to admit I wouldn't compare it to Halo2 or Half-life 2.
Three cheers for blizzard!!! Nice job guys!!

I agree with Dupayjon.. Gamespot generally has the reviews I agree most with. In this case though, I think the gave EQ2 a ridiculously high score (7.8.. come on),not surprising since EQ2 banners are plastered all over the place, and wound up giving WoW a 9.5 because WoW is in the same genre they had little choice but to give WoW an even higher score.
Gamespot didnt even mention WoW's massize server failures, and they say it "has a wide range of character customization". Lol, you think EQ2 got ridiculously high score with 7.8? WoW shoulda been lower, EQ2 shoulda been higher.
I'm not going to read this entire topic because it's probably full of idiotic complaints, so if this has been said, too bad for you.
WoW is an amazing game. It is the best MMORPG made to date, IMO. So many things about it are perfect.. the few complaints I have are just forgotten immediately.
But still, it isn't perfect. I find I don't like all the quests. Quests are nice, but there are TOO many.
'UYO DONT HAV TO DO THEM!!1'
Ok, you're right. But I feel inclined to do them because the benefits are so much better. The group experience for killing things is too low as well. Up to this point (level 20) the only advantage of grouping is to get harder quests done faster so you can get that XP bonus from the NPC. If you can solo, I find it a lot better. Most games give grouping bonuses, where in WoW the total XP of the monster is divided up through the players (I think).
That is my only complaint, and it really doesn't matter. Grouping allows you to kill higher level things that you'd not kill on your own so the XP is (maybe) better. I guess it just annoys me to finish off something a few levels above my group and get 70 XP...

I agree. The community score of 6.9 is much closer to the mark.
This rating is done with no high end guild established in the game and barely a week after released.
This is the ''premiere impression''. I wonder how they will rate it once they experience Afterlife wonderland.

There shouldn't be any Grouping rewards besides making certain quests easier and meeting potential friends. Why should there be a reward for making things easier? You still get the full ampount of Quest XP, sometimes more since certain quests you can perform at an earlier stage than would otherwise be possible, thus giving you more XP for that alone. Mob XP should be divided as it is since Mobs get easier to slay in groups

At least in the ob there was some group bonus (+7 for a 250xp mob). Don't remember if it was only for elites, but I remember seeing group bonus messages behind the initial experience gain on the battle msg display.
9.5 - lmao - they just lost all credibility with that review.
Wow is a fun game but, seriously...
I like this game much better than EQ2, but I could never give it anything higher than a (7) on a scale of 1-10 now. The servers are always down or lagged and the only innovative thing I have seen is the server Queue - which is by no means a (good) idea.

Goob,
Group experience is indeed awarded as you post it. The total experience is devided by the group members and each is given its portion. So leveling will go a little slower than when you solo. Your reward for grouping? Well, if you have a nice group its the fun. Plus less downtime. Plus its way less boring than constantly solo'ing. Plus you learn more about the game from seeing others at it. Plus you make friends which makes the game nicer in the long run.
And hey, if that wasn't enough? Blizzard is looking into the XP distribution in groups. They will eventually make up different rules for it.
I've played through most of the beta in small groups (2 or 3 people) and enjoyed that a lot. Solo'ing was fun, but as soon as a buddy would be on line, I'd join him in whatever he was doing, or vica versa.
And to come back to the topic; a 9.5. Sure, its kinda high. But to me the game scores a 9 at least. Its not innovative perhaps, but if all games were judged on innovativity we'd be seeing a lot more ratings below 5. I really enjoyed playing WoW. It has something about it... I know most games do in the beginning.. but still
And lets all just stop comparing EQ2 and WoW.. even if they've both been reviewed on Gamespot. We'll see what Gamespot says about both of them next year. Shall we just have a truce till then? After the review next year we can start the whole war over again :-p aight?
What most gamers don't understand is that if you are going to compare two games, you compare 1 thing and 1 thing only FUN.
Which game is more fun to play. That is THE ONLY THING that matters.
This is the whole reason for playing a game - FUN.
Sure you can have a game which has perfect graphics, but if you can't have fun playing it who cares?
So the question is, on a fun scale of 1 to 10 how fun is wow?
And, further, how long will the fun in WOW last on a scale of 1 to 10?
Keep in mind most single player games provide 40-60 hours of fun until you're bored.
Multiplayer games provide more fun.
Price apart, what's the overall fun level of WOW?
Personally I would say 9.0 on the fun Scale but with many many many days of fun (not hours).
The fun streamlined gameplay plus the massive amount of time you can be having this fun definately means this game is one of the funnest games ever made.
Sure you can try to compare WOW with Half Life 2. Graphically half life 2 is light years ahead.
But When was the last time you played half life 2 (or any fps for that matter) 12 hours in a row? And the next day another 12 hours in a row? And woke up tired and late for work on the 3rd day? And had a blast the entire time you were playing?
I think most people will see my point about fun level.
fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun fun. that fun....FUN!

I think Blizzard deserved the rating. Just by reading their forums, Blizzard is trying very hard to make everyone happy.
As for SOE's general ratings, all I can say is *ouch*. I almost feel bad for them.
