Note the SWG mention. I agree with the article and glad he makes mention of it. It was one of my favorite aspects of the game.  Though I haven't heard much about its fishing as of late. Seems to have fallen as silent as the induced false quiet on this board.

Fishing is 'sandbox-y and ironic', therefore not alot of the current SWG NGE uber-pwners are interested. Funny how even WoW has a pretty fun little fishing 'aside'.

There are collections based on fishing in SWG. Badges and a house deco aquarium are rewards if you have the patience of a saint.

I didn't get into the fishing aspect of SWG until real late in the Pre-CU days.  But when I did it, I did it in style.

I'd wade into a river with my Stormtrooper Armor on, then bust out the Fishing Rod.  Everyone stops to stop and look, maybe a couple "W-T-F?" sayings also.  But they all stop.

I loved the fishing in SWG, there was also some decent money to be made in it. I had to master cooking for my Jedi slot so I fished alot anyways.

Fishing in swg i did as a pastime some in my guild went bonkers over it, but then the cunge hit and that to care of that they fish now in wow and lotr lol, funny how that works out isn't it?

Fishing was one of those little "details" that made the game a virtual world.  My character would take periodic "vacations," when I would deliberately leave my primary combat gear behind, take one defensive sidearm and 'civilian clothes' and travel to different spots in the galaxy on a fishing trip.

It was fun to change up the routine and could be quite exciting when suddenly attacked by some critter you don't have the firepower to take down.  Throwing dead fish over the back of my shoulder at those weird, orangutan-looking things on Yavin.

Fishing was the best E-date in game, spent hours with girls fishing and chatting it up. They did add a collections aspect to fishing, thier was a little revival with this when I left, no idea if people are using it socially like I did.

What people have been asking for is boats, man I wouldnt mind taking a few freinds out to the Correlian straits and fish it up while I sip on a mojitto.

I have done fishing in Ultima Online, SWG and WOW (wish war had it) and always enjoyed it, even if it did not mean anything.

UO and WOW fishing did mean something and the fish and or items brought up could be sold easily

We always had a blast hosting fishing tournies.  Imo, the only point WoW gets is better worms come from zombies.

It would have been nice if fishing served a greater purpse in SWG besides decoration or further bait.

With such a complete crafting system, I wondered why no chef recipes, for instance, demanded the use of specific types of fish.

The only time I ever enjoyed fishing was in SWG lol :).  They made it a ton of fun.  Used to do it with good friends, just to chill at the end of a hard work-week.

SWG was full of amazing surprises like this.  Even more than fishing, I enjoyed looking in creature lairs for things like fireflies.  You could find jars of the wierdest stuff in lairs.  If you took the fireflies inside someone's house and released them, they'd be all glowie.  It was very cool.  One of the excellent people I met in SWG showed me all kinds of things like this: from fishing, to firefly catching, to milking fambaas lol.  It was all just so relaxing and enjoyable.

So much of that was a part of the online community atmosphere that was fostered by the original skill system with all its interdependent vocations.  That was the beauty of SWG.

Good idea there with using fish for recipes!  Apart from being just relaxing and fun (in a quirky kind of way), I remember some friends that would set up aquariums in their vendor malls, or guild cantinas.  One guild I was in had a zoo complete with a huge aquarium in it.  We'd try to catch all the different varieties of fish for the tanks ^_^.  Great fun.

Funny you mention this.  The old crafting system was so extensive and encompassing so many aspects of the game, that somehow Fishing wasn't really as useful as it could be.

Would be nice opening a seafood restuarant serving Calamari... on Mon Calamari.  Squid people come in, but they don't come out.  Courtesy of the Empire, of course.

Fishing still as popular as it ever was; they added new fish recently as well. And i agree, it is one of the little details which makes swg unique.

Fish that were caught were an ingredient in several BE schematics.  Some of the pet healing/vitality restoring items, IIRC.

Fish meat was also good as generic meat in chef items, but there were no specific seafood/fish recipes.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Several other MMOs include fishing.  Pretty much every one of them do it better than SWG ever did.

It wasn't remotely "Star Warsy" or "Iconic" but god damn it was a nice distraction and change of pace once in a while.

Same for me - sometimes I just wanted a quiet experience during my game play and fishing filled the bill.

Nice to have choices, something that many game dev's need to learn.

I fished on WOW and LOTRO. My toon got rich on cooked fish in WOW. Didnt do enough of it in LOTRO to know how they sold but it was fun in both games.

I enjoyed LotRO's fishing. There was a large pond in front of my house that I'd fish at when I just wanted to take it easy. You could cook with several different kinds of fish. You could also catch trophy fish which could be mounted in your house or sold in the AH. They also had funny items like "ball of gunk" and "old boot" that you'd catch every now and then. There were different kinds of rods and bait available. There are even a couple different fishing outfits you could wear while fishing. It was pretty well done, imo.

I haven't started fishing in VG yet, but it's there too.

WoW's fishing was also good, but I didn't get into as much as LotRO.

    Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN

Lol yes i caught a few rusty dagger in LOTRO fishing. And i agree it seemed more realistic than WOW fishing but then i think the game as a whole had a more realistic look and feel to it than WOW.
