Pet leveling question

Does anyone know the ins and outs of hunter pets leveling? Exactly how does a pet level? Is it time based, is it based on how many kills they do, do they share some percentage of your XP points (and thus translate that into when they level)? Does it matter if you are L20 and you get an L10 creature for a pet?

I ask because I am an L19 tauren hunter who had an L19 lion as a pet. I dropped him and got an L7 tiger, but then decided that a Worg would make the perfect killing machine. However, he is an L11. Just curious how it works. I have seen pets level just standing there, so some algorithm is at work, just curious what it is.

The pet levels with you when you fight together, it gets its own xp so it doesnt share yours. However the pet cannot lvl higher than you, so if ur lvl 19 and ur pet is lvl 19 it wont gain xp untill you get to the next lvl...

So you can get any pet you want that is lower than you. Oh and by the way I noticed that the pet levels quite quick, so raising ur pets levels shouldnt be that hard...

How does it get its own? Does it have to make the kill/initial contact? Is it just from fighting? For example, if I kill a creature and get 50XP, the pet gets some portion of that? Or is it just on its own formula derived from our combat together?

Just curious. I knew they could not go above your level. I also had problems taming a pet that was at my own level. At L15, I tried to tame an L15 lion. It appeared to work, but the lion did not become my pet. He just kept attacking me. This happened twice, so I found one that was an L14, and made him my pet. That makes sense, I guess, that it would be challenging, but it would be nice if it said something like spell failed, or if something flashed, some indicator that you need to try again (or run :)

OK - found this info, it appears the pet gets its own xp from the kill. Not sure about the exact numbers of what they get, maybe that is in the combat log? Didn't think to check that. I will pay more attention next time I play to see where the Worg levels.

The level of beast the hunter can tame is determined by his own level, however once tamed, the pet will level up along with the hunter, but only up to 90% of his own level. They will get the same amount of experience points as the hunter (not leaching) and will come with an ability or skill which will also improve as the pet levels up. There will be no indication of what the skill is before taming. A spider may come with Web which ensnares their target while another may come with poison or a sonic attack - it's the luck of the draw. You can only have one pet at a time but you can always 'abandon' it (not dismiss that is temporary) and tame another beast but of course if you've invested time leveling your pet it's a tough decision to snuff it out. It could be hard to resist as you progress through the game and tougher beasts start to appear, such as rafters, the like of which you'll not see until level 40 by which time you're bound to have a reasonably high pet that you could even have some sentimental attachment to. That's the thing with pets. So what happens if the pet dies? If the pet dies the hunter can summon it again but only after a five minute cool down. The Hunter demo mainly concentrated on the Pets but as far as skills go we did see a couple of melee abilities which included Swiss Strike which does a double attack and Hunter Strike which does +8 extra damage.

To finish this thread ... a pet has two "levels". One level is their relationship with you, their master. The other is their actual level for combat/experience/character.

And yeah, they level up pretty quickly, so grabbing a lower level one is OK.

One thing though - there are SO many to choose from! I finally got my Worg up to par, and then we hit Stonetalon mountains, and I was like hmmmm .... one of those would be cool.

    What an insane game ;)

Its a good idea to tame new pets every few lvls (about 2-4). For some reason a pet that you level from say 10 to 60 will be alot worse than a tamed lvl 60 pet. Something is not right with the scaling. So you should tame new pets as you go as they will always be much better (more HP, dmg, armor etc) than a leveled one. You will also learn new abilities from higher level pets that do more dmg than the previous ranks of the "spells". The one thing you can buy from a pet trainer in a city is the growl ability. The rest you get by taming pets and use them until you learn the ability (4 right now, claw, bite, cower and growl, growl can be bought at the pet trainer, they are near the hunter trainers in the capital cities). Taming will be very easy once you get frost trap and beast lore (shows what food pets like etc). So there is no real reason not to tame new pets, unless you get one you REALLY love ::::39:: . Try to get pets that atleast eat meat and fish, even better if they eat meat, fish, cheese and fungus (bears generally eat everything, cats eat fish/meat, wolfs/boars meat, crabs eat fish).

    Edit: added some info
