Avery even you should admit that this was a hail mary pass pulled out to make up for the FUBAR in-game event. If a web page scavenger hunt was all they could come up with as the main Anniversary event I would be ashamed to admit it. Also instead of ragging on unfinished you might go here and read what active subscribers think of the event...which was not much from the posts I read at least forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php
This event was planned before anything. It's not something put together after the in-game activites.
I don't doubt it was planned , and it might have been nice icing on the cake. Unfortunately the cake never made it out of the oven. you guys really need to start doing some planning and testing.
I'm sorry, but this contest is total fail. Why on Earth would anyone design a contest that encouraged people to NOT play their game? They could have put the seals in game for people to find...you know...to actually play the game.

So this is what the great Funcom devs are capable of coming up with when they plan things? No wonder every bit of tangible code put out by these geniuses is a bug-ridden mess. I mean, if it took serious planning to make an internet scavenger hunt for an anniversary, imagine how many years of planning would be required for each batch of code they put out to get it right the first time.
You wanna know why I think the negativity here and even on your own official forums outweighs the positive? Start with reading what you write. Then look at the history of the company you work for. If you can't figure it out after that, please don't go to another company after Funcom. You'd be doing us all a favor there.

Considering you can't think of a decent reply to a major concern amongst the many posters for many reasons, and at the moment resort to attack personally anyone who posts anything "negative" about the event, all you can bring is 2nd class replies worthy of a troll. I am sorry but that is not good enough. You see, you can't even reply to a person who is showing you the concerns of the PLAYER BASE of age of conan, just stating that someone, you think, can't form his own opinion. Like I said, the way Funcom handled both events (and I use this term loosely) is a bloody disgrace. You speak of second hand info while you speak (at your own merit) for the majority of players, with no real base attached to such clames. Maybe you don't realize that yet, but YOU are the second hand info. You're biased, rude, and when you got nothing to say you just attack the person who makes a point you do not like. This was my civil response. I'd tell you something less civil, but I don't want to lower myself to your level. Cheers, oh amazing one.
Just wanted to toss out a general observation from my end here. Normally, when anyone comments positively about anything relating to the game they have a higher chance of being picked apart by the community. Naturally so, when there is negativity posted it seems to have a higher chance of the opposite. Looking at it overall you can see there is a certain unbalance to the positive and negative posts that come out of the community here. When both are as equal in our eyes because we can't just have all positive input without knowing the negative input. Thus when quoting positive posts to counter the negative posts in your opinion could have a higher change of be void on the given subject that you're currently discussing (i.e.: event) just because it is positive rather than negative.
Nonetheless, I also wanted to point out that not one person speaks for the entire playerbase. I think referencing concerns from threads is still a good thing however. It does give you a general overview of the feeling and attitude over what's going on. When we see such things, it at least gives us the direction on where we might have faulted or even progressed. Though again, it's not the entire playerbase and trying to reference it as the sky is falling to everyone wouldn't be correct.
Thanks for the input Satansbible and others.
Wow... I can't believe I got a response from Famine.
Well, first of all, thank you for replying to my humble post.
And yes, I do agree - there is an imbalance between the replies to positive and negative posts, but I believe they should be treated equally.
I think that when a person voices either his concerns or his appreciations, he should not be flamed for his views. There is a civil ways discussing such manners. Nor should that person be told that he can't form his own opinion and he's just a troll (like your own represntitive had done here).
Now - my own opinions on the events are not really relevant, I do think however AoC is a good game and I believe no one can deny it is getting better and better.
What I did speak against (in my last post) was a blunt and rude shutting up of others who did not share someone elses opinion. I hope you don't mind too much for me doing so.
Thank you very kindly again for replying.
Famine is just a dude behind a computer who gets paid by Funcom to feed you bullshit, same as Avery except Avery supposedly does it for free, which is even more disconcerting. So stop acting like the damn Pope walked into your house.

And I actually thought you have to search for these tokens IN THE GAME. Shame on me for having such high expectations. So, does AoC need an expansion in order to start implementing events in the game or what?

The developers have nothing to do with the events outside of the game. This was a community event planned by the community team.
Glen ''Famine'' Swan Senior Assistant Community Manager - Funcom
That would be community team and not developers. This is a community event set on the community forums.
Damn Famine dont you sleep :P
Anyway before I start I want to point out I did enjoy AoC and found it greatly improved...although end game was very dull unless you call rolling an alt as end game...
Anyway short and sweet,I have to say Funcom is nothing but predictable, you are now blaming the community team which in turn blamed the players for the balls up of an in game event.
I really have to ask 1 question and if any decent answer was given I could maybe forgive this latest mess..
Why run a "player run event" in a lvl 40+area?
I have ran many a guild event in my days and always made sure it was in a non-combat area or a very low npc area, for some reason if this was a "player made event"then why did lots of players have to die numerous times or have higher lvls constantly killing the mobs there so lower lvls could get to the "event"
If Conan wasnt going to appear then why have it outside his castle?
Please dont say just to let of the 8 hour cooldown fireworks.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

SatansBible, I understand your new here and I think that is great, however, with regards to my replies ealier in the thread I do stand by them. Part of this is because there is a clear history with some posters here in particular, which I encourage you to check out that go back quite a long time. There is a saying with taking things "with a pinch of salt" which is most appropriate here. In knowing the in's and out's of this and reasons why you may understand more in the stance I had earlier. At that same time, I as an individual am free to express my opinion (am I not) and with that opinion, I have feel that in the context of what I wrote was very accurate. If one person is bent on trying to bring another conversation which has it's own thread into this and trying to spin it in different light then I will definately comment on that. You can even pick it word for word and end up scratching your head.
I am not flaming anyone for their views I am trying to understand the motivations for bringing a 3rd party view into the conversation of a different topic. You can find that answer outright and fast from looking in the right places. OFC people can bring any opinion in on topic, usually though it is their own and therefore as you have your own opinion you know all in's and out's (all the things that got you to the stage of that opinion) of it as you formed it.
I was dismissing that one non solely formed opinion earlier because I believe it or not I can disagree with it.
At the same time I actually haven't mentioned my own feeling further in this thread on the other subject but have done on other threads to the nature.
I still stand by the fact that having people look at all the other out of game resources out there on the other websites that you find during this contest is a valuable thing, unlike someone others opinion of an opinion that was not their own to begin with.
If you would like to discuss things further outside of this particular topic feel free to PM me.
This is a contest the other was a cancelled in game event - both form part of the larger 1yr anniversary picture but seperate at the same time.
Also I will always take the opinon of something with experience over someone with some theory that is not their own train of thought through that experience any day of the week.

Wait... I thought Famine was the pope. Guess I was wrong.
By the way... Can the pope be damned? If so - can he still walk into my house? What if the pope is old and I live very much upstairs and we don't have an elevator, can he die climbing up the stairs?
Have some damn respect, if unlike you I choose to be polite that's my buisness.
No go away and hide somewhere, putting on the tough act on the web impresses no one. You'll learn that some day.
You gotta be f****** kidding me! Again FC lackeys are blaming the community for screwing themselves up. After all the turd subscribers have been subjected to for one year FC manages to fail not to fail again (as that blogger expressed) and now blames its own players for it and trying to shirk responsibility by any means, even by encouraging some of its employers to post apologetic messages here. There you go - not only did the players get one of the most messy MMOs of all times, but are after one year being blamed for the game's and company's mistakes.
I guess the moral of this community-helping-FC-story is that the community should actually not help. After all, what is the point in helping FC if a) nothing good comes out of it b) the community has to plead to FC for something as banal as an in-game event to be setup c) if anything goes wrong, FC simply puts the blame on the players, since it was their suggestions and pleas that spawned events like "King Conan's Seals".
Remember - if patch 1.5 fails, it will be the community who will fail, not FC.

I have as much respect for Funcom as it has for it's customers. I think that says it all right there.
And unlike many of the keyboard jockey's here, I'm the same in person as I am in type, so no "tough guy act" here either. But think what you will.

I still stand by the fact that having people look at all the other out of game resources out there on the other websites that you find during this contest is a valuable thing.
No argument from me there, though I believe people rightly observe that this event is not an altruistic gesture purely aimed at the player community.
In order to have an opportunity for any of the grand prizes for example, an English player is to peruse through pages and pages of foreign language sites. This is per the contest rules:
"Please note: there is only one single golden seal for ALL languages combined - so an English player for example also would have to check out the other language websites to hope to find the golden seal."
Stop right there. Look at what this means:
There are 14 sites in French, German and Spanish to go through in languages you can't read or understand.
If one ever wanted to experience what it was like to be illiterate, this is how it feels. Page after page of words that you cannot read or understand. There is no learning, there is no appreciation for site content, nothing.
We could argue that the merit of the sites in our language provide some measure of valuable information; even though we're generating a revenue stream to those sites in hits/time on the site. That changes completely once the contests states that most coveted prizes can only be achieved by visiting sites that you cannot read or understand.
It's at this point, that people really see this event design in a different and not altogether flattering light. The moment one is asked to visit a site they cannot read or understand; they are just website traffic and revenue stream for hits/time spent on the site pages.
This is not accidental, it's by design and written into the event rules.
Take a look at this. Should one take the following items from these pages and paste it into a translator paragraph by paragraph?
Should one do it for all 14 foreign language sites? For a chance to win the grand prize?
How is this fun or celebratory of one's time in Age of Conan?
I know that not everyone will go for the grand prize, and there may be something they want that is not on the grand prize level. I understand it, I get it; I really do.
But this....Avery, this visiting sites that aren't in your language so that you cannot enjoy or read the content. Generating hits and time spent stats as you aimlessly wander around..It makes me feel really ill.
I admire people like yourself who endeavor to promote and advocate the product and company they believe best represents their views.
So with that said, this is the end of the line for me. Without my friends and colleagues playing anymore, and seeing this story unfold the way it has; I can't in good faith continue to support this company or its services.
Stay safe out there, and feel free to drop me a PM anytime.

Tell me about it. Just not even two weeks ago I did a podcast on SUWT, and kept going on about how the game has improved, Funcom had made the right steps...people need to try the trial, blah, blah..
Then they make ME look bad by doing these events.
I had high hopes coming down the road for patch 1.05, but I cannot in good faith continue to accept these types of "player community attacks" that Funcom perpetrates.
Quit blaming your customers and quit doing stupid crap.
well I don't even think Avery or Famine can dispute that this has done nothing to help Funcom's reputation. A web page scavenger hunt may have helped their bank account some, but nowhere near the extent a good ingame event would have with it's customer retention and word of mouth advertising.

My apologies to those players if my re-posting their comments here in some way contributes to their removal from the Official Forums.
I am curious Famine does the potential gain sanitizing descenting comments out-weight the actual losses of players who refuse to tolerate this kind of self-serving moderation ? (Questioning your moderation is 'legal' around these parts)
It would seem to me alienating your player base, does ever more damage than failing to plan and execute successful game events.

LOL Funcom never learns do they. Their forum moderation tactics go all the way back to Anarchy Onlines disastrous release. they figured sanitizing the forums would work then and they still have not learned a damn thing. This company just cannot seem to learn from it's mistakes and just keeps repeating them over and over expecting different results. if you read this Famine here is a clue .... tell the Devs to make a good game if they want to be successful, BS cheap forum tactics did nit work for AO and it won't work for AoC.

The only moderators that done a good job was 2pi team and it was on the European forums.
At least now they are consistent they just delete everything that does not please them.
Not only they need to improve the game but first they need to fire most (if not all) the moderators and replace them with pros.
I'm so sorry to see this game behing destroyed like that, it has so much potential
If Failcom was smart (which they have proven not to be), they would tell all of their community leaders and mods to stay silent until 1.5 drops. When a company fucks up as bad as FC did for their 1 year (beta) anniversary, any excuses, however legit, will only further inflame the playerbase.
Who is running the show at this company? Did AO ever have any live events, or was this FC's first pathetic attempt at one?
There was clearly supposed to be a new 'instance' for this event, but they couldn't release it. Did they work on this at all? Or was that a lie too?
Lastly, why the hell would they follow up a botched live event with an online scavenger hunt? Why not fix the instance and rerelease the 1 year event?
I loaded up a trial account this weekend and messed around with a Guardian for a while. This game is still trash

Live events in AO, when they happen which is very rare anymore, are handled by volunteers such as A.R.K.s or sometimes outside groups of players like Gridstream Productions. Occasionally GMs might spawn an alien raid in Bor or some other such frivolity, but nothing more than popping a few mobs in with extra hitpoints so people can kill 'em.
The last time Funcom tried a live event was when they gave Borealis ( a neutral territory open to all ) to the Omni faction, which effectively locked 1/3 of the games population ( the clans ) out of the main trading hub. Not too mention the Neutral ( AO's third faction ) players having their city given to Omni-Tek. Guess what happened? Funcom got the same backlash, even from the roleplayer commuity, for being stupid just like they are getting now in AoC for this last couple of "events".
What Funcom fails to realize is people aren't going to put up with crap for going on 8 years like they did with AO. Unless of course FC feels less than 25k subs for AoC would be considered success like they constantly claim AO is.

I commented on famine's post so it wasnt trolling, but they like to hide anything as they see everything through rose colored glasses.
My apologies to those players if my re-posting their comments here in some way contributed to their removal from the Official Forums.
I posted in that thread after those two posts and stated that I did not see why they were deleted...and started to wonder if some of mine were missing..
BOOM..Instant delete for me as well..

Your post is actually still there Open.
There was also a response to the moderation made here (the seal thread). As for censorship, we are keeping most of the open discussion in the main thread here (the king thread). That was the original thread that popped up on the event and the one we are merging all feedback into to keep the seal thread a little clean for those seeking help on the event. If you review over that original thread from page 1 to the last page. Then you can see the comments made in the original thread are pretty vocal and not in comparison to the ones moved out of the quotes that you guys are pointing out. Hope that explains it a little better for you.
Cheers!

From your first link you said "Posts removed (not deleted) are in order to keep the thread open rather than simply closing it with the posts intact.". I understand the words removed and deleted are entirely different, but please explain to me how you think as a practical matter that action is'nt exactly the same for a forum reader?
A more curious matter is the selective enforcement of the forum rules, Mods seem to have no problem letting the potty mouth rabid fans spit venom and full-flame anyone who makes a "WTF FC?!?!' type post. While detractors have to be careful to stay way inside the lines to avoid the Hair Trigger Ban Hammer.
But please do tell me how 'removed not deleted' makes any difference to the forum members.

This event was planned before anything. It's not something put together after the in-game activites.
I don't doubt it was planned , and it might have been nice icing on the cake. Unfortunately the cake never made it out of the oven. you guys really need to start doing some planning and testing.
I miss DAoC
I'm sorry, but this contest is total fail. Why on Earth would anyone design a contest that encouraged people to NOT play their game? They could have put the seals in game for people to find...you know...to actually play the game.
This event was planned before anything. It's not something put together after the in-game activites.

-And on the 8th day, man created God.-
Just wanted to toss out a general observation from my end here.

Worst event ever for a one year anniversary...

The developers have nothing to do with the events outside of the game. This was a community event planned by the community team.

Thank you
well I don't even think Avery or Famine can dispute that this has done nothing to help Funcom's reputation. A web page scavenger hunt may have helped their bank account some, but nowhere near the extent a good ingame event would have with it's customer retention and word of mouth advertising.
I miss DAoC
What were they thinking?
You can make this kind of promotion for non realeased games or addons but you must not drive your players away from the game.
Anniversary events, gifts, contests are really good ways to bring back former players in game and they screwed it all.
The more it goes the more I have the feeling AoC is doomed. I mean don't it seems they are trying to sink the boat?
Shame.

I didn't expect anything special based on their first info release,. but they should have had something better planned than collect coins.

I posted in that thread after those two posts and stated that I did not see why they were deleted...and started to wonder if some of mine were missing..
BOOM..Instant delete for me as well..
Do not question questions, as questions should not be questioned
The Funcom Way.
I would say stop shooting yourself in the foot, but dang...they are both gone. Can you shoot off your hands?
