Hey guys I've been a part of mmorpg.com now for a while and I respect everything you guys say on these forums. So I wanted to ask a serious question to you guys. How bad is the job market really?
See I've been in the military almost 2 years now and I'm about to be done with my contract and get out. I just really want to know how bad it really is out there to find a job? I don't want to stay in but I'm just sure with the economy being so bad and all if I should get really get out.
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks

I just applied for an unpaid internship and competed with over 100 people. Thats an unpaid position for 6 months full time. Every paid position I apply to, there are atleast 1000 other applicants and I live in a military town. However, more jobs should be on the way over the next few months especially in my city during the summer.
What kind of jobs where you apply for tho?
I'm not really looking for anything too fancy or high paying just a good job.

Well, it's a tough market, but it depends what part of the country you are interested in going to.
Check on the internet the unemployment percentages for the various states, some are worse than others. It also depends on what your specialty is too. There is not much need for riflemen or tankers yet, but some of the other specialties, like helicopter repair, or medical, may have jobs available.
If you haven't gone to college, I believe you still get some type of veterans benefit for education, you might want to consider getting out, maybe working a part time job, and going to school for a bit until the job market picks up.
Check out your options, and give them some thought.
Try this.

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. I did 6 years in the Navy during Vietnam and still regret getting out. My Brother did 30 years and retired as an E-9. Now he gets over 3k a month, plus medical and dental the rest of his life.
I could kick myself in the ass for getting out. Make it a career my friend, you wont regret it. OH....
Thank you for your services!
Go for a civil service job. Post office, state or local government.
Military people get extra points regarding hiring quite a bit of the time. Private sector they don't figure that in.
I know when I went for my supervisor's exam for law enforcement, I got +5 extra points for being a military veteran whereas someone who never served got nothing. So I beat out quite a few potential people several times on promotion exams even though we both had the same exact test score. The military points pushed me over the edge and into contention.
Any miltary person leaving the service should immediately go and apply for ANY type of civil service job, and do other things in the meantime.

What are civil service jobs?
Like a cop or a firefighter?
I was thinking fo going into law enforcement but I see it as kind of a extension on the military. Have to deal with the same old bullsh*t and everything. And that's why I am really getting out, just dont want to deal with all the stuff anymore.

My friend, you are going to have to put up with a different kind of bullshit when you get out. Most employers dont give a rats ass about you. Now, If you can work for the government in some type of GS status, you have it made.

Civil service jobs run a wide gamut. While plenty are law enforcement and emergency services like firemen, the majority are non-emergency. Example, for a state prison, most everyone working in them are civil servants from cooks, truck drivers, teachers, social workers, and all maintainence personel (Boiler guys and the like). Even the clergy were paid by the state. I remember years ago we had a Catholic priest who used to come in and had a parish on the outside, but the state also paid him 55k a year, so he cleaned up as a priest. Then you have your state government buildings which are set up the same way, sheriff's, clerks, secretaries, etc, etc. I have another ex-military friend who still works for the state in Elections, so civil service is huge. You can go to your local library or sometimes post office and they have the booklets that list all the jobs available.
Now depending on which state you live in and what you are actually doing, the pay will vary depending on the government. My last year's salary as a civil servant was 85k in law enforcement in New Jersey. But for the same job I did, down in Georgia or Kentucky say, was paying only about 45k or so, while California would have been paid a little more than NJ. I see you are in Louisiana and I am pretty sure that most of those civil service jobs will be considerably less than what you get up north or out West based on Louisiana's economy.
Civilian law enforcement isn't an extention of the military really, but it is a paramilitary organization with ranks and rules. The most problems I had with co-workers were from the people who had never served, who didn't understand chain of command. Some of them got positions based solely on how many Phillies tickets and BBQs they got and invited the captain to, so they always felt they were above any real accountability. I found the least problems with people who had served in the military whereas some of the others felt like it was their own personal police force. Some it was the only job they ever had since high school that their relatives helped them to get by tipping them off when tests came up and "reserving" spots even though they scored lower than other people.
Btw: what did you do in the service?
I was an Interior Communications electrician in the Navy and when I got out, I briefly worked for the phone company but got laid off after only 2 years.
To me, the private sector sucks donkey balls. I'd rather deal with knuckleheaded co-workers and have benefits than filling out a new resume every 3 years.

Still see quite a few help wanted and jobs around Phoenix
ill pm you telling you about one

Hmmm.. heres a little hint. Do the hard stuff and there won't be any people to compete with else you're just apart of the mass.
Not so true anymore.
I know for our local district last summer they had 5 applications for the janitor job to clean the public washrooms at the beaches and parks... the year before they had to actually find somebody because there was 0 applications.
This year they had over 325 applications for the job, and they were even paying less.. 15 dollars an hour to clean washrooms, your own vehicle, 325 applications.
As a university student, I made 20 dollars an hour working on campus, last summer I made 15 dollars. This summer over half of my friends are unemployed unable to find a job, and a good quarter are earning around 8 dollars an hour, part-time.
Yea.. its bad.
That being said, with the military background, im sure somebody has already said it, but B-line for a government job because you will have some hefty padding on your side.
after 6 or so years, I had to change it a little...
I got out after 6 years and am really enjoying civilian life again.
Still, the job market atm is pretty bad. It's flooded with skilled workers dumbing down their resumes to get any kind of job. If you are hell bent on getting out (I was) then I hope you have plenty of money saved up to help pay the bills, if not I would look into extending a year if possible.
I got out and dont regret it at all, but in hind sight I would of probabley extended until 2010. Thats just me though.
**Hehe, heard it said that 2009 is the year that High School students will be the most unemployed because all their jobs will be taken by adults working them, I believe it.
