Hi everyone,
first off, sorry i am french so my english is not that good.
I wanted to know if it is still time to start playing final fantasy online (i've never played obviously) or if i should try to get/wait for another mmo... because i've played the trial some months ago and found that i liked the game very much. I couldn't start playing because i had a low speed internet connection and couldn't download the game ( in my town there is nooooo way i could buy the game in cd's and the only way i found FF online is with direct 2 drive). Loved the job / subjob system idea. I won't have friend joining with me so i'll have to find a good guild that accepts newcomer.
What it's like the "endgame" in final fantasy online? is there raid or events? is it hard to find a group in the game (in my trial i created a character on the bahamut server)?
i will read the links on the forum to get to know the classes but if you got any advice for a new player i would love to hear them !
I don't know how to explain myself better than that and thanks for the answer!
i will be coming here to check and reply

FFXI truly is stronger than ever, I am personally on Asura right now and with level sync you never have trouble finding a group. Endgame is still extremely active with Dynamis/Nyzul/ZNM etc...and the new addition of Field of Valour allow you to solo up to 20 quite fast which is great if you don't feel like a dunes pt hehe.
Good luck in game
really? sounds good :)wonder if i should stick with the bahamut server or get on another one.
I can't say honestly how bahamut's population is; I just know that Odin and Asura are two of the biggest.
why do i always think of my question after making a threat :P
Is there some prefered jobs in higher level ? or some that group and guild doesn't want necessarely?
example : i was thinking about making a summoner when i could unlock it , and start as a whm
i've read that the bahamut server was locked for new player because of the population
seriously i hope you join FFXI. First off find the jobs you want to do and do them, secondly if you arent sure of the server you want to get on, look at the forums page on allkazam. from the thing i've read from post and in game conversations, each server, maybe not everyone server, but they seem to have a away of doing endgame "stuff" differantly ... mostly tactics and party setups ..
But formost just pick the classes you want to do....
If you your endgame is wanting to be Summoner, whm/blm/rdm/sch are going to be at least lvl 37. each of those sub classes are going to be for one reson or another.
Also if you join during the summer, the server populations are going to be down, well because its summer. but has soon as school starts back up the populations increase...

You could do summoner, but going for it as your first 75 job you won't be able to use fenrir or diabolos on your way up had you waited to hit 75 on another job and unlocked those summons at 75. As a summoner you start out with carbuncle, and can obtain the other avatars (less Fenrir and Diabolos) at level 20 in a medium difficult fight.
Desired jobs are pretty much just like any other mmo. Tanks (Ninja / Paladin) and Healers ( White Mage / Red mage) are highly desired, as are Buffers ( Bard / Corsair). My recommendation though is to go to ffxiclopedia, read about each job, and be what you love. That's the best way to enjoy this game ^^
thanks for the reply everyone
are there any jobs that ppl don't really want in their group, something i should stay away from ? i've heard that ninja seems to be everyone's sub-job for i don't know the reason haha
Ninja is a popular sub job due to the fact that you put shadows up and it prevents you from getting hit by mobs. It's popular for most melee end game wise in XP/Merit Point Party situations and for Mages in soloing. In raids it is not uncommon for most people to stick to more classical subjobs for dmg purposes like /WAR over Ninja though.
Jobs to stay away from...Puppetmaster (only because people truly underestimate its potential and will prevent you from getting fast invites, amazing job but most don't know it) , Ninja / Ranger / Corsair are always wanted but can be very expensive for a first time job, Beastmaster are regarded as soloers so you wouldn't get many invites on that, and Black Mages are amazing for endgame raid events, but its very very difficult to get in groups past 50 as they are mostly situated in Aht' Urghan and many would rather just to bring melee jobs.
Everyone pretty much answered everything. The game is doing great, so I wouldn't worry about population so much.
Summoner is a job that takes some dedication to get the summons on, so you would need to be wary of that before you attempt it. The only easy way to get summons is to just tag along for the higher battles and get them that way. Also, SMN is mostly regarded as a main healer/ buffer in a lot of party settings. It's more of a stigma thing from when they were restricted way back when in terms of using a summons abilities. As long as you can deal with that, you'll be fine.
As was said before, Odin and Bahamut are closed off because of overpopulation. You'll have to go to another server. If you happen to choose my server, Kujata, I'd be fine with helping you learn things and provide you with a linkshell. We've been getting a lot of newcomers lately, so you wouldn't be the only low level person.

Thank you very much for your answers
Ok.. first off you dont have to be 75 to get Fenrir, you can gain the Fenrir and others at any level.. i had all the summons at lvl 1 before i started playing summoner ( it was unlocked)

I think they mean doing the fights. If you're a leech and tag along, you can get it if they win. But you're not doing those fights any other way before then. You're completely useless for those fights if you go on a low level job.

I just started playing last week, after having tried it when it first came out in NA(Most of my complaints have been addressed, which I'm going to post about).
I've tried Phoenix, Shiva and Titan and all three had very good population. As far as S/E and the likelihood of them ever closing FFXI down... Well, they still milk FFI. Hell, they just did a reprint of the PS1 FFs(7, 8 and 9), which you can buy one their website now. I'm sure they'll be porting FFXI to the Xbox 3 and PS4 in a few years.
Exactly, if he had read my post he would have seen I said Summoner as your first 75 job you wouldn't have Fenrir or Diabolos. If you want to be completely useless in the fight against Fenrir as a low lvl job then yes you could possibly get him after you've ranked up all your fame and gotten the other summons. Diabolos would be even tougher as you would need to go through some CoP and then do the higher level fight to get him.
I wish people wouldn't give misinformation to people just starting out =/ Nothing is more depressing then leveling for a job and finding out you will be incomplete unless you leech or have worked hard for all the summons.
/shrug.. was meaning to be negative.. I depends on the group you get into i guess or the friends you know on the server.. both Diablos and Fenrir i was invited to go along with, they had planned on 5maning both
