deciding an mmorpg

Hi.  First, I would like to introduce myself, as this is my first post on these forums.  That being said, I sincerely hope this post does not turn into some kind of flame war.  Now, onto the topic I am posting about.  I recently quit FFXI for a variety of reasons, but I do like the whole feeling an mmorpg gives, so would like to find a new one.  I enjoy questing, and large enviroments, but I just don't have the time to hunt all day for a party.  To give you an idea of my time restraints, for those of you who have played FFXI, it took me nearly 3 weeks to get from level 20 to 21.  Although, perhaps the thing that got to me the most was how it was impossible for me to go solo at that level, and I was still considered low level.  What game would you people suggest, or is there one I should be waiting for?  Basically, I like being able to solo, but like doing quests too.  And yes, I have tried Ragnarok online.  Problem there is the total lack of quests, the only ones being get x item to y npc.  Oh, and before anyone suggests it, I do not have the money to just go out and buy every mmorpg on the shelf and buy a secondary computer capable of running them to test them on.  Nor do I have that kind of time.  Anyway, I'm starting to babble, so I'll stop typing now.

And soon my plans for world domination will be complete...right after I finish playing with this peice of string...

World of warcraft sounds like your cup of tea. Instantly rewarding and non-stagnating. The beginning levels are a bit too easy, but once you get out of the newb gutters you'll be on your way to a great casual experience. (of course something tells me you might have known this already)

Yeah, I have looked into WoW.  I'm just doing alot of research before jumping into another mmorpg.  The last thing I want to do is spend money on another game I end up quiting in a couple months.  Also, I've been looking at CoH, but that sounds a bit shaky right now.   Oh, and I forgot to mention what class I was playing on FFXI, cause it says alot about my preferences.  I played a red mage.  For those of you who don't play FFXI, it's the jack of all trades class (or is SUPPOSED to be).  It's the only class I REALLY enjoyed.  That's part of the reason I'm considering CoH is for the ability to customize a class.

i too would have to go with World of Warcraft on this one, mostly due to the fact that you seem to enjoy questing above all else, and WoW has tons of that...

    --------------------------------
Games Played - Too many to list~
Games Currently Playing - City of Heroes.
Favorite Game So Far - Lineage 1 ^^

I also answer to "Peeler", "BigPeeler-RMX", "BiggerPeeler", BiggiePeels", "BP" and "Snake". Yes, I rather like "Snake"...

Guild Wars maybe. I read somewhere that it wasn't that kind of game that you had to spend all your spare time on. And it was easy to get "fit for fight"

GW is definitely not a soloing game. This is what the man is looking for: an easy to get into easy to solo game. GW missions can be soloed with the AI helpers, yes, but it'll be tough to kill any of the big spawns in the game. GW deathmatch is group based and trust me that group can range anywhere from supergood to superbad. GW is a good game, but if you wanna play it properly you absolutely need some friends or a guild as the name suggests. Otherwise you're getting way less than half the product. WoW can be soloed for much of the game world although you'll need the occasional grouping for some tough quests.

Its not like its hard to find a group of people to play with in GW, and you can always grab NPC characters if you cant find enough people to make a full group. GW is soloable, it gets harder at higher levels, but having played the WPE and the last two Beta events, I can safely say I was able to solo if i felt the need. Also at anytime you can go into the explorable areas, and word has it that at retail (maybe sooner) they are adding public Explorable Areas which act just like a normal zone from a normal MMORPG.

    1. What I said was you're getting less than half the product when you solo.

    2. The explorable zones are quite tough to do without friends.
    3. I said guild wars was a good game. One of the more innovative ones coming out next year. More casual playstyle than WoW(although going out and killing stuff with a group of AI NPCs straight off the bat will see you not getting enough gold nor items): Casual as in you can go out and fight in the arenas anytime you like and it'll mostly be skill driving you to victory. If you want loot and gold, not just exp, a group is necessary.

    4. You know what this man is talking about. Grouping always poses the threat of noobism. Guild Wars requires you to be in a group, be it filled with AI, noobs, guildies, friends, etc.

Well it all depends if you prefer joining a new MMORPG or a long-time running MMORPG.

As much as I want to say "Go for Dark Age of Camelot".  For DAOC, you could always try and download the 14 day trial just to get a feel of what the gameplay is about.  Because if you LOVE the gameplay and you're extremely disapointed by the graphics, then you're in luck.  Cause first buy the Platinum Edition for 39.99$ (canadian price) which has both expansions included inside that improve all landscape graphics to look up-to-date.  Then in a few days they are releasing their 3rd boxed Expansion called Catacombs that makes all characters and NPCs look up-to-date too.  So in the end, the game looks just as nice as Everquest 2 (Although EQ2 does have more complex and better modellings for the landscapes, not to mention twice as many races to chose from).

What's the advantage of joining a MMORPG that's been out for over 2-3 years?  The fact that all those anoying bugs people hate are gone.  The fact if you're having a hard time with a quest, you can find your answer right away in the forums.  The fact that if you need help you will always find someone to help because they know the game by heart.  And there's also the fact that DaoC have such great reviews and comments from thousands of players that you have to play it to see it for yourself how much this is a great game.

    *OR*

Join the majority and play World of Warcraft.  I finally see why so many people have been so hyped about the game and love it.  The game is fun, even if I only played for about 15 minutes with my friend's account.  But since you want to solo, go for WoW.  I played EQ2 for 2 weeks, and I wouldn't of gotten to Level 15 as a Cleric if it wasn't for friends and random grouping.  EQ2 cannot be soloed at all!  At first I thought I could solo as a Cleric, always healing myself, but it's slow.  You make 3-4 times more XP grinding in groups than if you are alone.  The only times you will solo are when you do a quest like "deliver X to Y" or "kill 10 rats, 10 snakes and 10 beetles".  But missions that say "kill 50 Gnolls" ... forget it... if you want to spend hours killing 50 gnolls on your own when it can be done in 30 minutes with a group, go for it.  :)

You would love both World of Warcraft and City of Heroes. You won't regret buying either of them.

I think it depends on how often you like to solo.

If it's only part of the time, then Guild Wars could work for you.  I soloed with helpers and had a blast, then I went and did some pickup team things when I was in the mood.  It depended on how much time I had to get on - it's great to be able to log on for 30 minutes, grab a helper, do this and that and then log off.  When I knew I had more time to spare, I could invest in finding a group.

BUT I have to add that I didn't play the higher end game, which does require teams to play.  I bow to the opinion of more experienced gamers on this part.
