What's so hard for people to grasp about a company making a game to earn money? It's like when they hear "free to play" they assume the company is some humanitarian organization that gives away it's services for free so the cheapskates in the world will have a haven of endless fun at no expense. I just don't get what people don't understand about having a cash shop to fund the game. It's not some secret conspiracy to try to separate you from your dollars. Reality check time guys... they're in the business to make money from the players.
The nice part about RoM is there's other ways to earn the diamonds for CS items besides forking over real cash, and the items on the CS aren't required to play. It's not like you hit level 30 and then have to buy a level unlock stone from the CS. Everything on there is non-essential to playing the game.

no no no. you are wrong. i want everythin. and i want everything for free. and i want to be the best without doin anything. i want win the lottory without playin lottory. i want i want i want...
Well, I for one would setlle for fair prices in a cash shop and a balanced game.
Would even be willing to pay a bit more than a P2P is for monthly fee and box if the game is good.
None of this found in RoM, though.
People tend to live in a real-life fantasy world with roses and prancing ponies, thinking that a company is going to magically summon a game that they don't plan on making money off of and that it will be totally free without any sort of hint of an issue with the game (especially balance-wise).
Well, reality-check time! I think RoM does a damn good job of being a quality F2P though.
Bump. Some people just aren't getting it.
there will be always people without brain who wont understand what f2p means.
Most people understand that a F2P game is going to have an item mall to make money, people get a bit annoyed when the item mall is rather expensive. The world microtransaction usually means a small transaction for a small amount of cash.
Lots of whats in the ROM cash shop is fairly expensive in comparison to other F2P MMO's such as atlantica and Sword of the new world.
Of course they are more than welcome to charge what they like, and over time will be forced to drop prices to compete once the
"newness" factor wears off... hell both atlantica and sotnw were expensive as hell once they started going.
Fact of the matter is, if Im paying more than a normal MMO then the cash shop might be a bit pricey, with RoM you pretty much DO have to buy diamons as every thing on the market asks for them now, and that starts to really dig your pocket books.
So, no, I dont think they are a charity, but I also dont think their pricing is quite fair yet. I also think they would earn more cash if they offered the exp bonus items at week, 14 day, 30 day, 60 day, and 90 day intervals. 10 shots of an hour at that price is nuts.
That group would be "Runescape players" which seems the crowd this game caters to.

No, that group would SEEM to be "Runescape players" to you. I enjoyed this game, but utterly and completely despise the piece of garbage that is Runescape. I know a number of other people who play it and none of them play or even have played Runescape.
Indeed. Console games developers make there money by marketing there games at stores and such. They gamer buys the game right there and plays it. For the MMORPG market its simple : By at a shop (or download) then pay for a montly sub due to the fact it is an mmorpg and its constantly being updated and maintained with all this new contect developers bring out ect. If the game is free to play then its obvious : Nothing is ever free. They dont put hard work into this stuff and use up a budget to make a big online game and then release it with out any any sort of profit who the hell would do that? They have to earn money for the work they've done. Caaaash shops!
C'mon, this game is a cash shop scam! You can spend HUNDREDS of dollars to get the best gear, and without it you are not very uber at all. To do this without the cash shop takes forever.
People are better off buying a real game and paying $15 a month. The quality is vastly superior and there is no deceit.
Sure, they have to make some money to stay afloat, but this thing is a ripoff, plain and simple. This is no different than a thousand other jerks out there trying to fleece you out of your money. This plot to screw you just happens to be a game rather than some infomercial claiming "you can become a millionaire in real estate for $40! Just buy my foolproof system!".
Just because you CAN spend a lot doesn't mean you HAVE to. In fact, you don't actually have to spend a dime and you can still achieve the same level of proficiency as people who spend hundreds of dollars... it just takes longer. The people who feel compelled to spend a lot on the cash shop are just impatient and weak willed.
With the $15/mo games you're essentially renting your playtime. If you stop paying you can't play. Whereas with RoM you can stop using the cash shop anytime and still play. The problem with the monthly fee games is you have this sense of obligation to play it every week or you feel like you're wasting money. That's not the case with F2P games. Want to put it down for a week or even a month? No problem - your account will still be there whenever you want to log back on. I'd much rather have the option of spending as little or as much as I want than being forced to pay in order to play.
Yeah, "stay afloat", I'm sure that's what their objective was when they decided to run RoM. "Hey guys let's only charge enough so that we can make rent." Gimmie a break. There's no deceit, there's no scam. You don't have to buy diamonds if you don't want to. In fact, I believe Frogster reported that roughly 20% of the people are buying diamonds. Yeah they're really ripping people off.
People actually think F2P means the company won't do everything in its power to convince you to spend real money. its an unrealistic expectation.
I went into the game willing to spend about the same as I would on a monthly sub game, and so far I've got about 90 bucks invested in the game and am in my 3rd month of playing.
With that I have 3 characters riding mounts and reasonably well geared with levels from 20-32.
I'm also sitting on a real nice stockpile of gold, and in fact, in the past few weeks my gathering activities have earned me enough gold to pay for all my recent gear purchases. (some very nice +3 to +6 items I might add)
Am I equal to some of the folks who have spent 1000 dollars on the game? No, but i don't really need to be. I've heard that at level 50 I might need to spend some cash on making my gear better, but for now I'm got a decent pot of diamonds for when I need them, and mostly live of my gold stash for items and gear .
Is it free? No, but then I never really expected it to be. However if you wanted to and had more free time you could easily fund yourself entirely in game and I have guildmates who do so.

The community in RoM is 1000x better than the community was in Runescape......Its not even close.......You'll find more jerks in 10 minutes of Runescape than you would a month in RoM......
My statement was ionly in reference to the group he was describing. I, at no point, said that all RoM players were Runescape players. However, to deny that F2P games cater to that crowd is rather head-in-the-sand.

i dont see f2p as a charity, i do however like to look for f2p games with cash shops that dont imbalance the entire game, they are rare but they are there. Dekaron for example. You will have a tougher time lvling up but it doesnt really put you in any disadvantage against paying players.
besides that most f2p games are plain trash, not even worth a dime, RoM is a rare case of a pretty decent game thats also f2p. Free Realms is another. but the list kinda ends here. can mayb call perfect world, and ofc dont forget AO without expansions.
what im trying to say is that 90% of the f2p games are so horrible they dont even deserve to ask money from the ppl who are playing them.
MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)
I am sorry but I play only games with subscription, because I'm too poor to play "free to play" games.
Anyway, didn't you think that "free game" _might_ come from statement "free to play"?
They could just write that you need to burn lots of cash to remain competitive, it's just a simple manipulation of poor people - but it is the way some earn money, from scamming innocent people.
If the bonus 25% free ketchup was really free you could just take this 25% and go. It is free UNDER CONDITION that you will buy whole product. It is so common manipulation that YOU DON'T EVEN NOTICE IT'S NOT RIGHT TO SAY IT'S FREE, BECAUSE IT'S NOT!
So have in mind that, not everyone is so "all-knowing-geek-born" like you. Respect other people's free will to experience new things.
If they stated the truth, they would have MUCH less customers... it's sad like that.
I double your opinion. RoM is quite above the standards f2p-wise. And the greatest perk here, in my opinion, is that you can trade the diamonds in the game. This enables trading time for diamonds. You can farm and sell items to other people, where you will be like earning real life money. This is the greatest trait of the game in my opinion.
No offence but You obviously havent played much. With a top weapon costing over £40:00 real money this game has just become for the very rich and it is not possible to match CS users. Maybe in theory but not in practise. This game was hyped as the best next generation F2P but sadly because Frogster has lost so much money over the last 2 years they are just going over the top on the CS shop and the numbers are dropping.
Meh, I don't have money to spend, or the means of spening money xD!
Well you're in luck, because you don't need to spend anything to play RoM.
lol go to church they give you everything for free lol
for the rest of us just budget from 40 to 80 $ intial cost at some point plus monthy of 10 to 20$ and you ll have ton of fun
lot of gamer from america in this game witch is surprising when you think most american gamer dont like f2p period
if wow went f2p most american gamer would probably stop playing
