What defines you?

What defines you as a gamer?

Why do you play games?(not even just mmos)

What is it that you get out of it?

Do your friends play games?

I seek to understand my fellow gamer more, and so I'm posting here in hopes that some of you will respond with what(to you at least) it means to be a gamer. It doesn't matter if your "Hardcore" or "Casual"  or whatever others may consider you. what does it mean to YOU?

If some of you could tell me about your life(in the real world) as a gamer, stories of late night raids, rants on TeamSpeak, jokes you and your friends at school make(that no one else gets, you know the kind)

I'm no expert, and I certinly don't want to start a flame war(an unfortunate side effect of gamer culture, or of any culture with web-forums) Just send me a message, or post about experiences that we proably have all had.

Thanks ~OutlawFencer~

What defines you as a gamer?

nothing. also, xbox achievements is lame. if you could trade achievements for store credit it would be a different story.

Fallout 3 right now. I prefer the Diablo series over any other Blizzard game. A long time ago I played point and click adventure games. My favorite DS games are the Phoneix Wright series. I don't play mmos. I'm waiting for my perfect game to be made and it would be something like Elder Scrrolls V.

What is it that you get out of it?

There's a sense of completion I get by beating games and doing every side quest - being a power gamer makes me feel like I am beating a game to the maximum extent. There's a sense of accomplishment in that.

    Do your friends play games?

    yeah

    mostly it means having fun

If some of you could tell me about your life(in the real world) as a gamer, stories of late night raids, rants on TeamSpeak, jokes you and your friends at school make(that no one else gets, you know the kind)

well I have a friend who says all the Warcraft unit speech

I don't play mmos but I've had lots of 2player fun in the past. I remember me and friend working on beating the original Buster Brothers game. It was a very rewarding experience. We also would play all the 2D fighter games but I don't play them online.

When I was really young me and other kids would play the hell out of NES games. I probably beat Guerilla Warriors more than 10 times (even though the game has unlimited continues and is really easy beacause of that)

I just play because I like being in strange new worlds and the adventure that comes with them.

I admit though, mostly I am let down once I start playing a lot of games.  There have been a few games that I still remember not letting me down at all.  I remember this one game I played called Clive Barker's Undying.  It was a totally creepy world to be in and a freaky ass story.

I wish there were more games that could capture that feeling you get when you watch a great fantasy movie like the Lord of the Rings trilogy.  Only, they put it in a game where it's extended out and you really feel like a part of the whole thing.

I am not sure what you mean by that,  That could be taken sooo many ways. I love strategy. My favorite thing to do in game is predict others actions in combat. I have to stay busy all the time, I like lots of action, but not mindless repetition. I do not like to do the same thing twice. I mainly PVP, I hate NPC interaction, I would prefer a game that I could solely level on other players. In games,  I enjoy killing everyone I see, in as many ways I can possible think of. I enjoy being able to use creativity in combat and switch tactics quickly.
I do not take it too seriously though. It is fun, I like the risk of my character dying and losing all my stuff.  That is enjoyable to me. The way I look at it is they are good enough to kill me, they deserve whatever loot I have. I do not get upset when I get killed, and do not fear being killed in game. I often talk to my oponents during battle, if they make me laugh I will most likely spare them.
I have lead many guilds/ battles/ wars/ clans, though I never asked to, I was elected to do so, and do not enjoy doing so. I like to play on my own time whenever I feel like it, and do not want the commitment and headaches that comes from guilds.  Though I am good at leading in wars, and strategy, I like to do my own thing. I often hide from guild members,  chat off or play other accounts because they get annoying after a while.  Not that I don;t like them and all, but it just gets irritating to have 600 people talking to you at once for extended periods of time.  I prefer one on one conversations more in depth than you can keep up with in a mass spam  game chat environment.
One of my favorite things to do in games is beat the odds. Make a low level character and solo player kill entire higher level clans with it by using strategy and creativity. I like the challenge, and loathe boring AI. I have no use for NPCs, or PVE, and do not see the point in having it in an mmo.  They are only useful in a single player game, in my opinion.
Why do you play games?(not even just mmos)
To keep busy, the world seems like it runs in slow motion to me. I am always multitasking, I am often killing players in game while doing other things as well. It is hard for me to find enough to keep me busy all of the time. It is enjoyable to me to have things fast paced.
What is it that you get out of it?
It is a release for stress,  and for entertainment.
    Do your friends play games?
Yes, and I play with many of my close friends.  Some of them enjoy doing the same things I do in games, others are not so good with PVP and usually wind up working for me in the merchant/ trade aspects instead.

I like a game I can log off whenever I want and still compete. In a fast paced world, I often play on my laptop so I can be working out, cooking, by the pool while playing games at the same time.  If I want to log out every 15 min, I should be able to do so and be able to compete. I cannot sit still long enough to be in one place longer than that at a time without getting " antsy" to get up and do something. SO I enjoy games that do not require extended periods of time at once.

Once I was leading a 200 vs 200 pvp war and I was on headset and the phone and a song came on the stereo I wanted to turn up so I could get "in the mood" for the battle. My cell was plugged into the charger still and my headset to the computer so I jumped up tangled myself in the cords and wiped out completly. I soo busted my ass. LOL took out my keyboard mouse, headset, ripped half the cables out of my computer .. was quite a site.  Everyone on heaset and on the phone at the time thought I  had been PK'd for real, it was a pretty loud crash...  By the time I came back we had been ambushed and half the guild was wiped.
I do not usually talk about games outside of games, in fact for the most part I don;t talk about games in games either.  To me that is a pretty lame subject. I enjoy more finding out more about people, and just kicking back and shooting the shit. Laughter is the best medicine. I discuss different aspects of games when asked, but usually do not bring it up unless I am helping someone who needs it, or a game developer did something that pissed me off, like nerf something I enjoyed.

I think a better question would have been:

Why do you call yourself a gamer?

    Just becasue you play games?

Some people are gear-heads, some are trekkies, and others are race fans. They aren't always that, it's just a part of what they are. It can be as simple as entertainment, or the need for community, or even just something to win at.

There are no wrong answers, and nothing says you have to post here. Maybe I'm looking for an ocean in a mud puddle, but I just want to see if maybe there is hidden depth..

I don't feel that I am in anyway defined by the games I play.

I play games to pass the time.

I enjoy the art form. It's my hobby.

About half of my friends play games. Very few of them play them as much as me. A few of us regularly get together to play them.

I think I'm a hardcore player, or at least have been. I used to attend international tournaments and that sort of things. Win prizes and whatnot. when I first started gaming it was not something to publicly admit to. Being a nerd wasn't cool at that time.

I had some small coterie of gamer friends, my "cool" friends, the musicians and playboys etc. would all rib me for hanging out with gamers. Embarrassing myself (and presumably them!).

Then came the tech bubble and all those young nerds got well paid jobs and became the fashionable and attractive to ladies types of nerd.

Since those days things have really changed. Most of my mates have played games they enjoyed. About half of them reguarly still do  and it's a subject of diner party conversation that even the girls join in on. I play game with my neice, (I've even played Netris with my wife!) and it is now a totally mainstream hobby.

The internet has arrived so the tournament circuit has died. I don't think I would be motivated to go anymore anyway. I'm not so obsessive about any of my games as I was 20 years ago and I'm not so commitment free I can get away as often. TV nerds came and interviewed me last year, which impressed the hell out of my "cool" friends, who now all play games or have played games too.
