I couldn't disagree more. I think most players that are not willing to try the game are not misled by the so called haters. I am sure most of us that have been following this game can see the bull crap coming from both sides of the fence. We also know how to read between the lines to get the basic truth.
You and the other fans are just as guilty of misleading as any so called hater. Often when someone points out a negative you guys try to spin it. If someone states a positive you guys blow it out of proportion, trying to make it bigger than what it is. A lot of the fans here plain right out lie also. Case in point. From another thread.
You said it was the first time the server was reset after the server went down. Well everyone knows this is not the truth.
So the ones not willing to try Darkfall are the ones that have done their research. Read what each side had to say, watched the videos on You tube and then came to the conclusion not to try it.

The question was about first *rollback*, not the server going down.
The problem with people like you is you miss the essential details that make the difference between fact, fiction, and wild exaggeration.

That isn't entirely true. I wasn't an avid follower of the game, but before trying it I would like to think I did proper research beforehand to even see if it was worth trying out. But to me, common sense was screaming that if there is still this much commotion about the game, and everyone is so passionate about whether they love it or if they hate that it would be worth at least trying out and seeing for myself instead of relying on other people's deluded opinions.
/shrug. Who knows if I'll stick with it or not, but so far it's been worth trying out.

I Know what you ment in the other post and already corrected it. So since I spend time in the official forums as I do here, I have read that roll backs do occur so this will not be the first time. So either you are misinformed or you are lying. I'll let the people here decide.
If your just misinformed I apologize for saying you lied in this case.
As the title suggests, I finally gave in due to my lack of willpower and purchased Darkfall yesterday. After downloading, installing, and the short patch I hopped ingame. I spent the better part of lastnight in, and a little this morning. Nowhere near enough time to try to formulate an opinion that's set in stone, or try to offer a review. But it is enough time for me to state that people are entirely too critical of the game on too many levels. Asheron's Call is still praised to this day by people who claim it was one of the most solid MMO titles around in a PVP sense, but if it were to launch today, it'd get the same reaction as Darkfall got. I still play AC to this day, tho, so maybe I'm biased on games that sport this type of gameplay.
I tried going into it with no expectations so that I didn't set myself up to be disappointed and say, "told ya so" but that didn't work out to well. I'm human, I read the forums and the EuroGamer review, I couldn't help but feel if the community as a whole feels so strongly, they must be right. And I was wrong.
I'm not even going to say the game is rough around the edges. It has the same grit, the same vibe, as I got back in '99 on Darktide on Asheron's Call. My experience so far has been nothing but positive. And I was a person who was so influenced by what the majority said. It isn't a pretty experience, but it isn't supposed to be. The UI, while different, works brilliantly to me. After the initial ten or so minutes ingame it seemed exceptionally fluid to me, and accessible. With the exception of the Java quest log, guild tab, and such, the UI seems to work exactly as intended, for me.
The enviroment is beautiful, the character models don't share the same quality, but they fit in the world. And that's another thing that was surprising.. how much better it looks ingame than through screenshots and watching videos. The animations are clunky, but I just don't see how if they were any prettier it would benefit my gameplay experience, which is what Darkfall, to me, is about (so far), is the experience. The community really isn't all bad, either. Any forums might be kind of iffy, but so far ingame, I've seen quite the opposite as I did on the forums. Most of the individuals I have came in contact with are fairly helpful and conduct themself in a pretty mature fashion.
It brings me back to my MMO roots, something I've been wanting for a while. There's things that have gotten on my nerves, I've been ganked more times than I can count over the last few hours, but I just tell myself, "Welcome to Darkfall" and hopefully the cycle will continue with me being the one doing the ganking in a few weeks. I can see how people could be turned off from the game, but for someone looking for a genuine gameplay experience and not all the fluff, I feel like Darkfall is the safest bet.
I'm not saying the game is perfect, or anything along those lines. I'm saying that I went into it with my expectations built up from other people's opinion and found the game was quite enjoyable so far. I know I'm going to hear the, "wait until you've been in longer and see if you say that" and I probably will wait and see if I still say that in a month or so, but my first impression of the game so far has been great, and quite unique. Very different from any new title on the market, and I thought that's what we all wanted. Or at least what I wanted.
Yeah, I have had mixed feelings with the game at first. At first I felt nostalgic like you said, but then I got kind of discouraged when I joined a guild and they were completely content with standing in town shooting eachother. Couldnt get very many people to leave or anything... and being a new player I couldnt afford mount etc to get aruond quickly, so travel sucked.
But then I relaxed a bit. I remembered how hard it was starting AC back in the day, and I remembered how sucky Eve is at first. Then as I was thinking about Eve, I realized how similar the games are in many aspects. Which led me to tradeskills - I realized the guilds fairly remote area was a great trade area. So I played it like Tradeskillers play Eve - I farmed some wood and ore.
The trades are surprisingly similar to Eve's mining - meaning it takes little attention, so you can do it while your watching tv, chatting or talkin on vent, whatever. They give pretty nice cash as well - and its actually even more convenient then Eve because you could leave it going like 15-20 mins at a time right from the beginning - in Eve it takes time until you can leave your miner unattended for that long.
Just a day of that gave enough cash to really start experiencing the game better.
To be honest, its kind of the opposite with the "wait until youve been in longer". Most people get discouraged early on and talk trash about the game without really understanding it - same as they used to do with AC and Eve. Things are a bit more harsh because AC and Eve had better PvE options, and this is all PvP. It seems the game catches on.once you get a bit more comfortable. Also, you see that all the hype people say about "skills meaning so much when you compare new to old players" - its really not that bad. A brand spanking new player with no XP can do about 14-15 damage in back, and someone who been skilling since release can do 50 - so about 4 noobs with no gear equal 1 fully skilled with gear. In terms of MMO's, thats not really so bad at all. Eve has a much higher variance between new and old chars (we're talking from 2-digit new character DPS, to over 1k DPS experienced players). Skills go up fairly fast too - you wont get them MAX fast, but you will get them at a decent amount fast. Just dont play solo as a new player - in a week or 2 youll be somewhat competitive for solo once you learn tactics, but till then just travel in groups.
The best advice if you want to have fun in the game - if your having fun in it, dont go to the forums for it. It ruins games for you (all MMO's really, no matter what you play - all the forums have talk that makes the game seem like its horrible.)
So the ones not willing to try Darkfall are the ones that have done their research. Read what each side had to say, watched the videos on You tube and then came to the conclusion not to try it.

I am glad your enjoying it so far. The thing is you still did research. For you it was worth trying it. For others it will turn them off. Each their own.
I have learned to read between the delusions on both sides. There is always truth there. It may be hard to find, but it is there.
Anyways good luck playing, I hope it is what you have been looking for.

I've been playing since release and this is the first server rollback I have heard about. Chances are you mis-read, again. If you can provide a link to another server restart I'll believe you.

You say this, yet a few posts up you stated, and I quote.
"Like i always say: anyone who really enjoys open, freeform PVP (as distinct from structured, WOW/WAR-style BG PVP) will love Darkfall."
Well I am someone who enjoys those things in an MMO game, but I think Darkfall is probably the worst MMO game to ever charge customers to play it. Yet, in the above quote you said "anyone". Well I'm pretty sure I fall into that category.
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
if you "run out of things to do" or "get bored" in DF or EVE then you need to just accept that sandbox MMOs are not for you.

yet again, someone comparing eve, to this joke of a game.
DO NOT COMPARE EVE TO THIS GAME - EVER - FOR ANY REASON.
in ever, there's a ton of stuff to do. in darkfall, there's just more grind to macro thru.
npcs -- in df, you bug them, get where they can't hit you, or otherwise exploit the mobs.
construction in df - pretty much a joke. you grind for assloads of building modules and build up the predesigned cities.
quests - what? 5 or 10 quests? yeah, df has no pve worth mentioning.
don't compare this joke of a game to eve - EVER. all of the above... darkfall is pre-school. by comparison - eve online is sophmore in college.
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

LOL, EVE and DF are almost the same in terms of content - EVE just has more carebear-oriented content.
- small handful of quests in both EVE and DF
- EVE has different ships, DF has different weapons, skills and spells, plus ships, vehicles.
- DF mining is just as boring as EVE mining.
- DF has a lot more varied terrain that actually affects the outcome of battles, EVE is always just space.
- construction in EVE and DF is very similar; DF does not have jump gates and cynojammers, EVE's POSs are not as elaborate as DF's cities.
- DF's mobs blow EVE's away; EVE's mobs are braindead stupid. apocrypha added sleepers that are about equivalent to DF's hard mobs but that's only recent; 5 years after release. not to mention auto-aiming and auto-targeting == sad.
- EVE has research-invention, which is a bit like DF's enchantment.
- you could easily argue hauling is a huge timesink/grind in EVE, which DF doesn't have.
- DF has nothing like EVE's market stuff, yet.
and the best one: grind. lol. in EVE you have to time-grind your char for 12+ months just to get enough basic skills to even compete in PVP, and even then you'll ALWAYS be worse off than 90% of the game who have 20+ mill skillpoints more than you. in DF, you can be equal to 90% of the server in 2 months of regular playing, no grinding.
i realise you're an EVE fanboi, but at least try to be objective. i too play EVE and i like it, but saying EVE is OMG SO MUCH BETTER THAN DF is just wrong. EVE and DF are both excellent games and very comparable as sandboxes.

Best game in the world, and the worst game in the world. 75% of the game is learning, not just the mechanics, but the people. As you learn, you start being able to avoid the worse parts more, and spend more time in the best parts. The worst parts are really fucking bad. But, they only make the best parts really, really good. What other game out there damn near gives you a heart attack when you see your shadow? That's what gaming is all about. for me anyway. Not just a game that scares you, but one that is actually able to pull "real" feelings out of you. Fuck yeah!
Just like there a horror movies that scare you, and comedies that make you laugh. Darkfall is a game for people who like to experience it all, rather than a game that tries and cut all negatives from it...which ends up leaving you numb most of the time.
Don't get me wrong though. The bad parts..are bad. There's many times i say, "this is just stupid". Many times ive said, "fuck this game". But, everytime I log on the next day. We spend 20 minutes to an hour telling stories from the previous night. Most of them we end up dead, but we laugh and cry our asses off. Every night is the beginning of a story. Thats why I play this game atm.
See you in the dream.. The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.

- EVE has different ships, DF has different weapons, skills and spells, plus ships, vehicles.
Do you never tire of spewing bold-faced lies, javac?
Eve is *far* more than just "different ships".
Each ship has a number of fittings into which a player can install a variety of equipment... turrets, electronic warfare equip, hull and armor enhancements, propulsion addons, shields... and so on. Players can equip any ship in Eve specifically to their playstyle/specification for that ship. They can swap things out and change the setup as necessary; any single ship can have myriad different configurations.
There are Implants which allow a player to further enhance/fine-tune their character.
And of course, the many skills a player can choose to train their character for even more customization.
Citing skills, spells, etc. etc. in DF while only saying Eve has "different ships", leaving everything else out, is about as intellectually dishonest as you can get... especially from someone claiming to play both games. But then, I guess considering the source, it shouldn't surprise me.
If you're going to talk crap, javac, at least do it about a game that doesn't have a wealth of information readily available, or a large number of players capable of pointing out just how full of it you are.
- DF mining is just as boring as EVE mining.
Opinion.
- DF has a lot more varied terrain that actually affects the outcome of battles, EVE is always just space.
Yes, because everyone knows that there should be forests and mountains and lakes and rivers in outer space. Duh.
That's about as sensible an argument as saying "Cars are better than motorcycles because cars have 4 wheels and motorcycles only have 2".
DF is a terrestrial fantasy MMO... thus it takes place across varying landscapes. Eve is a space-sim... thus it takes place in... you guessed it... outer space. Gee, what a concept!

BS. It's been discussed and demonstrated by many players on the official Eve forums, and here, that within a few weeks, you can be equipped well enough to participate effectively in PvP. It does not take 12+ months. You're talking crap here.
i realise you're an EVE fanboi, but at least try to be objective. i too play EVE and i like it, but saying EVE is OMG SO MUCH BETTER THAN DF is just wrong. EVE and DF are both excellent games and very comparable as sandboxes.
You calling anyone a fanboi of another game is the height of irony. Telling them to "try to be objective" is icing.

Seriously, why even post a thread. Wait a week atleast. Alot of games look awesome in the first few hours or days, before the smoke fades and your left looking at the mirror and a reflection of your empty wallet.
The OP is basically an assessment, not a review. He barely played much, but he quotes a lot of "observations", which does not make sense for a pretensious new player with only a few hours in.
Even for that, all I read is the same old story. DF in the eyes of the beholders, is a game for ffa pvp. So that is it. You pay a huge price, more than the best MMO out there, to buy a big empty map for pvping. If that is what you want, sure, pull $50 out of your wallet .. err CC, and be sure you only got billed once, not multiple 50s.

You're 100% correct in stating that my OP was an assessment and not a review, but, anyone could make an observation the moment they log into the game world about anything; the UI, character models, whatever. I don't understand what kind of person could spent 15+ hours doing something, or being somewhere, and not make any observations.
Am I really supposed to install the game and run around while not taking anything in, disregarding my experience because hey, i'm a pretentious new player with only a few hours in, so whatever I'm doing now must be completely different once I put FOURTY-EIGHT hours in, right? Right. And I didn't quote a lot of observations, I stated my own. But I didn't really touch on the actual gameplay or anything, just the cosemetic stuff I noticed upon logging in. My credibility must of went out the window when I did that.

If my wallet would be empty after spending $50 on a video game, Houston, we would have some problems. Thankfully $50 is how much I would spend on liquor, or other things I really enjoy, in one night. So I think it's safe to say that Darkfall is not a budget killer. However, I've realized that it doesn't take me a week to tell you if I enjoy a game or not. If I can't get into the basics, I won't get into the endgame or anyother timesinks, and most of the time they get the basics wrong, they got the end-game wrong, too.
Most of the individuals I have came in contact with are fairly helpful and conduct themself in a pretty mature fashion.
Let me guess you didn't role a human? which race did you pick.
its just most the people complaining about ingame community or rampant ganking seem to at least mostly have rolled humans. I haven't actually played a human myself but its definately the most popular.
anyway good write up. I agree with the roots remark, it feels good to play a new game that feels so much like my first mmo.
DF has been anything but stable with people losing mounts, ships and all sorts of time invested due to server crashes and even shutdowns.
Just people you've read complaints on forums doesn't mean you know for a fact what the server stability is like. you'd have to play the game for yourself. I read complaints about most game servers such as WAR, AoC etc. Darkfalls is probably the most stable than those mentioned from my own experiences, especially when all are compared at launch.
Well i am happy you found something to keep you happy until Aion cames to NA, but reading your post history you seam to bounce around alot. this is a good 1
I urge everyone, even those of you who have not heard of the game, to check it out. JUST went into Open Beta and need your support! Real time combat system, actively dodge and aim attacks, house vs. house PVP, and a beautiful world and solid, original classes. This is not your typical fantasy MMO -- a very unique and inspired setting as well as entirely skill-based PVP. No more gear being the deciding factor. Check it out now! http://spellborn.acclaim.com/splanding.html
This is all well and good but is 2 weeks this'' Really, the bottom line is the game just isn't as innovative as I thought it was going to be or hoped it was going to be. The first few levels are really interesting the first time ingame if you try dodging, but after that, it's pretty much just a pattern for dodging mobs, making it just another skill-smasher. It works well, but is it original? No, it is basically a rotating Guild Wars skilldeck, which is a good idea, I like the skill-deck, but the "real-time" combat is just another form of button smashing. Good game? Sure, but it's basically the same as any other game on the market minus a lot of the polish. After playing the Aion COB and feeling what it's like to play a polished game again, Spellborn has a long way to go. Infinite potential, but it's just not there yet. I still log on and deliver things, kill 5 of this for him, 2 of that for her, collect 16 of these for both of them, and then run back and forth delivering messages for another 30 minutes. Plus, there's just an overwhelming amount of pure run quests in Quarterstone. The game probably would of been more enjoyable, too, if every named mob (Vaults included) wasn't bugged. But the Vaults are supposed to be big chunks of the story line, the fun things to do, and every one I experienced was either completely bugged to the point it just wasn't fun trying to figure out how to manipulate pathing, the NPC not helping me, or certain mobs doing crazy damage out of nowhere. Not worth paying for yet, really. Glad everyone is still enjoying it, tho.
And around the sametime you post how bored you are looking to play DAoC
Well, I got pretty bored with the genre in general and really haven't been playing much lately. Tried a few games out here and there for a few hours for a few days, but nothing really caught my eye. Started thinking about trying some of the older titles I got into but really the only one that looked appealing to me anymore was Asheron's Call and I couldn't connect due to my router not agreeing with their servers or something, forgot exactly what they told me. Anyways, never played DAoC but I had a lot of friends that did. I tried WAR out and RvR was fun, repetive on that title, but fun. Everyone kept talking about DAoC tho and since I'm sitting here at 1am I decided I might try it, and came here. Anyways, to my question.
Then a few days later you end up thinking about EVE online and then end up in Aion beta , which you seem to really like. i am happy your having fun after a few hours but with your record of changing so fast maybe you should play more before you post ..
Not to through this off-topic, but I'd love for you to meet me in-game and think button smashing will work for you. I say this because you don't even have to use buttons to attack. I've also never experienced one bug in the vaults minus vault 2 and it's NPC not helping out, which is rather pointless because the boss is cake to kill and I am a rogue class at that.
Back on topic though, I'm glad you enjoy this game. In due time Darkfall will get better it seems, most games do. If your willing to, stick in there and don't read the forums. Some people here seem to think that since a game has flaws, you should hate it, and will jump on every remark you say. Even ones liek comparing it to a dated game, which is just how people perceive things. Have fun and good luck!

people say that all the time about EVE too.
if you "run out of things to do" or "get bored" in DF or EVE then you need to just accept that sandbox MMOs are not for you.
like EVE, there is a certain amount of time and experience you have to get past before the game really grabs you.
if you play DF like a linear themepark MMO and just do quests, farm mobs and the occasional bit of PVP, then yeah you may well get bored in a few weeks. the real "hook" is getting into the local/world politics and/or playing out a character role (mercenary, thief, ranger, etc).

FYI, i do not lie or exaggerate, if i'm guessing at something i indicate it, unless it's already patently self-evident to an intelligent reader. the problem is, many readers here are not.

Glad your enjoying the game.
Dont listen to the hate, those people have been here for months doing that. The same damn people.
"When the time came, I bought it. I had to. I had to find out. I wanted to believe. I have faith!!!!! ....Tasos I love you!!!!!!!!"

lol, no. I love you. You put a smile on my face and made my night, thank you.

"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
yet again, someone comparing eve, to this joke of a game.

Excellent post!
Darkfall for me:

[Mod Edit]
/takes notes.

My blog:
Just people you've read complaints on forums doesn't mean you know for a fact what the server stability is like. you'd have to play the game for yourself. I read complaints about most game servers such as WAR, AoC etc. Darkfalls is probably the most stable than those mentioned from my own experiences, especially when all are compared at launch.

Actually rolled Mahirim.
