The new SW:ToR cinematic was great - but what about the game?

TealaTeala Member RarePosts: 7,627

When will we actually see or be able to read about the game and how it works?   Right now we're just given snippets and don't know all that much about the actual game play and mechanics.   I and many others would love to hear more about the basic game.

For instance.

Are the planets described at the official site open worlds that we can freely explore or are they worlds with a central location with instances we can explore?

Is the game play linear?

Are there zones that are level dependent?

Is there any twitch based combat or is it more or less like every other MMORPG?

Is there any space travel ala SWG's Lightspeed?

Will players be able to own spaceships?

How many races and what are all the classes we can play and are they all set in stone(any chance for multi-classing)?

Is the game skill based at all?

If it is class based(every thing points that it is) - won't Jedi's and Sith be the dominate class played and if so how will non-force classes be able to compete equally in game with such a powerful classes available to anyone that plays the game?

Will it be a grinder?

Will there be housing?

So many questions and so few answers...it would be nice if BioWare would loosen their grip on info.  :)

     Wednesday Teala, wednesday!

Well, I'm pretty sure quite a few of your questions will remain unanswered even then, but at least they will be showing actual gameplay footage including a story-quest with one of their pivotal choice-moments.

I believe the Smuggler and the BH will be promoted there as well and we likely will see the cover-system in action.

Let's see what the actual in-game demonstration will be like, yes? ^^

I just read on someone's comment in another thread that Wednsday they will be showing ingame footage at E3.  As for the rest of your questions, I'm sure they will release everything very slowly of the next couple of months until launch.

They'll be showing something called a 'FLASHPOINT', which is a very important moment/quest but it is instanced.  They also did say they would be showing off Korriban, Tython, Ord Mantell and Nal Hutta [the 'origin' worlds] so maybe you'll get your answers :)

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

I really can`t wait to be tomorrow.I do hope they will deliver because players will have high expectations for ToR.

I bet you can see it live from www.ea.com/e3 , but does anyone know what time (including timezone) the presentation will be?

  • KrayzjoelKrayzjoel Member Posts: 906

Its a wait and see thing. Bioware makes good products so my expectations will be high.

Played : WOW, LOTRO, COH/COV, EQ2, SWG, and WAR.
    Playing EVE Online and AOC.
    Wtg for SW:TOR and WOD

well. as they have said they are going to pick a fight with wow, there are some indications on how the game will be (as i see it)

if they are going for the masses, dont expect an old school sandboxy kinda game.

it will be easy to learn.

    there will be grinds (timesinks)

there will be faction/pvp grinding for equipment.

and the game will be able to run on older pcs.

but i dont fear this, as i anjoyed wow the first years.

and its Bioware, so they will set their own mark on the game, instead of just making a a wow mark 2.

If what you want is official details, you'll probably find some here as they decide to release them.

  • Agricola1Agricola1 Member UncommonPosts: 4,977

I think they'll be releasing stuff over the rest of 2009 as they have already. They're releasing info at a set pace keeping a constant buzz and keeping potential customers interested. It'll release probably about the end of 2010, so I think it'd be a bit much to expect any massive revelations or in depth info before next year. Just my opinion.

Are the planets described at the official site open worlds that we can freely explore or are they worlds with a central location with instances we can explore? Both. Probably not as large as SWG worlds, but should still be relatively open, with certain areas deemed important.
Is the game play linear? Again, mostly linear, but with plenty of sides. Look to LotRO's example
Are there zones that are level dependent?  I would imagine so, given you don't want bounty hunters on jedi starter worlds, while they are trying to build their lightsabers, etc...
Is there any twitch based combat or is it more or less like every other MMORPG?  Similiar to other mmorpgs, except with faster paced combat of a cinematic quality. I believe this was referred to in an interview back during the gargantuan lightsaber debacle...
Is there any space travel ala SWG's Lightspeed? No data, however I wouldn't expect it in the base package. May come as an expansion.
Will players be able to own spaceships? See above answer
How many races and what are all the classes we can play and are they all set in stone(any chance for multi-classing)? Multi classing, no- since your "story" revolves around your class. Races have not been announced, but it is a good bet whichever ones are in the comic previews, will probably be in game.
Is the game skill based at all? As in Eve style skills, DF style skills, or classic mmo style skills? Please elaborate.
If it is class based(every thing points that it is) - won't Jedi's and Sith be the dominate class played and if so how will non-force classes be able to compete equally in game with such a powerful classes available to anyone that plays the game? It is class based, as mentioned earlier, however classes will be balanced, and supposedly the class lore supports this (trooper is more like a GIJoe commando, than a grunt)
Will it be a grinder? Define grind. DF style grind, Eve style grind, "korean" style grind, or WoW style grind?
Will there be housing? No word yet, though if there is, I am thinking it might at the least be like LotRO's at least, or EQ2's at most. Not like SWG.

    More instanced than open

    Yes

    No

    No

    5 to 8 races and 5 to 8 classes
Is the game skill based at all?
Not really but you can assign training points to different skills as you level up
If it is class based(every thing points that it is) - won't Jedi's and Sith be the dominate class played and if so how will non-force classes be able to compete equally in game with such a powerful classes available to anyone that plays the game?
Jedi and Sith will be no more powerfull than other classes.  They can't be or nobody would play other classes
    Will it be a grinder?
    Yes
    Will there be housing?
    No

I would be happy if the world was like the ares in wow that i could explore. Could not tolerate DDO or GW.

There is little known about the game as it stands thus far. However some of your questions may be answered in the SW:TOR FAQ.

IN the end, the cinimatic trailer cannot be used as an acurate gauge to how the game will be. What you can assume from it, is that the devs are willing to put a lot of money into the game to ensure it will be well received by the fans. That point, even though its small, is encouraging.

The trailor shows that Bioware is committed to the story and that is a hopeful sign. Bioware also has a very solid track record with some great games (Mass effect, Baldur's gate, KoTOR, etc.). I do have high hopes on the game.

    Good questions Teala.

Once again I am disappoited in the MMORPG community in general (not everyone but a lot of people).

    Don't you people EVER LEARN?

How many times have we been shown flashy trailers?

E3 is chronic for it.  Flashy video followed by VAPORWARE or a sub standard product.

Let's face it - E3 is a developer circle jerk (no apology there for calling it how it is).

And yet look at the comments on the trailer.

A new generation of Fanbois is born.  Baaaaaaaa!

You know on the holonet thingy we see some combat footage from what looks like in game.   Is it just me or does it seem a little slow and maybe even turn based - instead of real time.   I saw no run and shoot movement at all in any of the scenes they had up there.

After all the BS we have been fed by so many companies I will remain sceptical until we see the end product, so many dervs have made claims which they failed to keep, while i know they have not here I still think the proof will be in the pudding.

I hope they do bring a game we all want and need but lets not get carried away by a glossy vid which when i looked at it seemed good at first sight but when you look at it a few times same armour all bland stuff outside of the fluff.

    Bandit.

Aye, you speak the truth, I've been burnt too many times by todays developers....as for me and BioWare however, well... this is BioWare and they have never failed in my eyes.  BioWare, Bethesda, and Paradox (at one point it used to be Creative Assembly until Empires) are the few companies I would buy from sight unseen.

It is totally acceptable for the rest of the masses to keep an open mind about the promises from MMO devs.

LMAO its more like dont you ever learn. If you know people are gonna get hyped up over and awesome looking trailer then why get yourself in a tizzy? Just brush it off and go about your business. Honestly the trailer was frikin awesome but we all know thats nothing what the game will be like. Calm down dude, relax

    Paradox?

I can cure that - buy Diplomacy.

Edit: Oh yeah - that was an E3 showpiece too.  Now they have even tried to hide it on their own website.
