I have been away from MMO Playing for awhile and i was looking at this game long before it was released but i just couldnt afford a new comp at the time. Anyway, pretty basic no frills. Its been out awhile I just wanted to know the scoop.

There is a free trial, retails boxes are dirt cheap on e-bay and bargain bins in your local game store.
From the official forums forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php
"I was browsing around in a Goodwill store to kill some time and saw 6 AoC copies in a glass case there. Told my friend that was thinking of trying it about the copies I saw. We both figured they may of been opened boxes and maybe already in use...because after all, what do some old ladies working at a Goodwill know about PC games anyways. Plus, they were marked down six times, and were at $2.99 a piece when I saw them. You read that right...$2.99.
Told my friend that even if they were bunk, it was worth the risk at that price. So when we went back to check them out and were both surprised to find they were all brand new copies still package in air tight plastic wrap."
Time cards can be found for less than 50% of their face value as well.
Hope that helps.
Try it out. It's good for a month or two, but then it gets real old real fast.
Still, it will provide you with 2-3 months of gameplay, and that would hold you off until the fall releases
At those prices AoC is definately worth trying, is it worth the subscription fee? That you can only find out after trying it, for me it isn't even worth the space on my HD! AoC is an OK CORPG, but it isn't an MMORPG and a good CORPG like Guild Wars doesn't charge a monthly fee so it's a bit of a no brainer in my opinion.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

You can find the game on sale easily enough.
AoC's strengths are visuals, reactive style combat, and storyline. Weakness are crafting, housing, and requires a fairly good PC. I am currently enjoying the game but ymmv.
It has no long-term appeal but it's definitely worth playing for a couple of months.
Experience tortage's interesting gameplay and storytelling (1rst 20lvls), the melee combat system (gets boring after awhile), and the amazing graphics and good music.
Sadly the rest of the game is lacking IMO.
If you can find it at $3 like Unfinished says then its worth it. If you go into it not expecting alot, then you will be impressed by the begining levels of 1-20. Once you get out of Tortage thats when it goes downhill. The higher you get the worse the game gets with ganking, bordom and everything else that kills mmo's. But by all means....dont rush through the levels without admiring the scenery. Its something to be admired. If you can casually play AoC, you will probably like it for the first 50 levels.
p.s. Yes I played it in the begining and Ive also tried it in the last 6 months and it pretty much hasnt changed that much.
Look, man, asking these people if AoC is "worth it" is like asking your mother for a haircut. The fact is most of these people don't know about anything that's been going on with AoC, and the others are still making "dethrone wow" threads. And they always make me laugh because most of the people who play wow never bother making it to 80, and if they do then they don't really bother with farming those heroic badges. And if you don't farm heroic badges or run heroics a hundred times for decent gear you will never find yourself a raid spot (and if you do I will give you a million dollars). And if you do that then you've basically hit the jackpot! Raid naxx until you get to ulduar, YAY! but... but then what? BGs? Arenas? Argent tournaments? Lawl, this is the game that has to be dethroned? basically running instances until you vomit? But there has to be more to the game, because after all the game does have 11 million people playing it right? It's not just rinse and repeat? How could it be? The game is basically where it is at because it requires atleast a super nintendo to run on. And half of the population if not more are players 14 and below, who walk into their 7th grade class and proclaim that they are the leetest orc or gnome in class.
Now, despite what people post here about AoC the game has seen many upgrades in the past year, let alone six months. Performance has been drastically increased, bugs have been virtually eliminated, Lots of end game content has been added, i.e. raids. Everything that these "dethrone wow" herbs cried about AoC a year ago is not as big an issue anymore.
People are downloading the trial and arre deciding to stay after the seven days are up, so, the ppopulation is steadily increasing, and you should do the same. If you want to know is this game worth playing then the only way to determine that is for you to actually play it yourself. Either that or go make another "dethrone wow" forum because that's just the rage.

A 3rd Grader can tell you not one person mentioned World of Warcraft in this thread, dunno why you are 'responding' to comments that don't exist here.
AoC has seen many updates, sadly 1 year later it hasn't fulfilled the what was advertised on the box. And the updates are getting farther and farther apart, with no 'road map' to anything past the itemization patch STILL on test-live.
As for the current number of subscribers, only a small minority on the official forums are siding with your claimed observation of 'steadily increasing'. The majority are reporting the opposite.
Well, AoC do have it's strenght and weaknesses. The big problem with is it that it is kinda small, it really needs an expansion or 2.
But it do looks good and the collision detection in the game is the best in any MMO.
Just do the free trial or buy a cheap box and try it out for yourself, you might tire after a while but you will proabably have fun for at least a while.
The noob experience is very good, but the game is a bit too easy for my taste. The classes are interesting and works very good when you group.
If you don't do dungeons however your gear will look pretty basic after level 35, everything that looks good after that (and that is good) is dungeon drops, mostly BOP. Until 35 the most of the game is solo play with some group quests.
AoC does have a trial you can try. See if you like it for youself
Hold off. Big new patch coming down the pipes. Sposed to change a lot.
My advice: wait til about 2 months after the big patch and get a free trial. Thats the fairest I can be about AoC.
You might want to ask current players your questions as your thread is full of half assed BS in my opinion. Honestly, because any current player in the know can tell you that; here though you have people who have been asking for refunds since a year ago who last played then and that is not going to do you any real favours is it, as no one likes Chinese Whispers and that is the bottom honest line. ( no offence to the genuine fellas in the thread )
However, is there any particular area you want to know about specifically? System specs? how it plays / run? Classes and so on?
The game is on the verge of having the biggest ever game changing Patch ( # 1.05) there is some nice info out there here and elsewhere all giving a good overall picture and representation of how the game is going to differ from now till implementation soon.
You will also find a decent amount of information out there for the direction the game is going to take after this massive patch right through over the summer months and into fall. Again if this interests you let me know and I'll link you up.
Cleaned the thread up a little.
I enjoyed it greatly but one of my best gaming friends didnt like the lower fantasy feel of it.. So we ended up in WAR... I cant really say which one I like better. both have their good points..
I was in beta and played for a month after release, till problems with the game and all the kids drove me away.
Ive always kept an eye on it and as i gave up wow recently for good ive been going through my games collection and ive finally got to the last 2, and decided to give AoC another go as i think it deserves a second chance.
Playing: FFXIV
Future: wishing for SWG 2, World of Warcraft Classic
Played: Most current and extinct MMO's - 18 Years in....
Interesting Fact - I own 27 Tarantula's
This is one of the most fun MMO's I ever played. The problem is that it lacks content, so once you get to level 80, you'll see yourself with nothing to do. So you'll probably re-roll and re-roll over and over again.
Aside from that, you won't find a more innovative combat system in any other MMO.
Former xFire user... I only wanted a game tracker and messenger, not a screenshot taker, video recording, broadcasting piece of bloatware.
I like AoC a lot,the world is beautiful, music is awesome & immersive even if I would have prefered a bigger world and less instanced.Performance wise it runs a lot more better than say.. WAR.I started the game six months after release so I don't feel the burn out like a lot of those who rushed through the game at release.
The coming 1.05 patch will be a drastic change for the game as it will either make it or break it for many.
In the land of Predators, the lion does not fear the jackals...
I can definately see where your coming from, I think patch 1.05 is really a make or break deal. More of a freshen up I would say. The biggest issue is overall content, but when you look at the number of quests they are very comparable statistically to plenty of other high profile mmorpg's.
I think one issue is getting people to those areas/quests. It simply wasn't there at the start, with more fast travel added things are better but not perfect.
I think if there was some way in facilitating people into Sieges in an easier way many people would have a decent eye opener. There is still very large percentage who haven't full on sieged yet. I would like to see this relaxed somehow as it is a selling point.
I would like a bigger world too, zones don't bother me. But there is content there which is worth your time and money though.
Well after playing this mess at launch and for 6-8 months afteward i can honestly say and stand by my word that i will never give failcom (failcom.com) another cent of my money.
This company is an an example in the MMO world of "How not to do things" they have rogue forum mods that will censor you if you post anything that is not rosey, garbage CS that has straight up robbed people and refuesed refunds and...
Most importantly Failcom is incompetent at video games, they have proven this for the past 6-8 years. This is a game that was released with one of the biggest memory leaks i have ever seen in a game. The patches thet were supposed to fix the leak were laughable claiming it was fixed.... These retards dont even understand their own software.
This new patch all are waiting for i can assure you will be a wreck - items will be OP at first then nerfed to nothingness - graphics will be missing and they will have the wrong classes assigned to the wrong armour (eg plate for casters)
as for my exp in AOC i was a raid leader in the top guild on my server and 2-3 position worldwide we had many world firsts and seconds, i have seen this game from the bottem all the way to the top and it was disturbing.
sorry to rain on anyone nice day but you know it in your heart failcom cannot resit failing.
Well, it can only get better from here... or so I hope for Funcom. But I aint paying more for this mess, the should at least iron out the main bugs and at least give us what the promised from the start...
i think this game is worth for playing since no new MMO release. Atleast this game can last you 2-3month until Q4 2009.
Have you forgot about The longest journey and Dreamfall? Clearly that is 2 games that the press and players hated eh? :P
Playing: Battlefield - Bad company (Xbox360) Arma2, DFO (PC)
On my radar: TSW, MO
MMO's played: SWG (pre cu/cu), WoW, AoC, WAR, DFO, Planetside
MMO's that I have tested: Lotro, L2, Aion, Ryzom
The two absolute killer bugs (grey map & female attack animation) for me were successfully swatted. So far, Craig has done a good job from what I can see. Now, I will be honest and say that I would like more content but the same could be said even for WoW. I am looking forward to 1.05 and the new zone. The new raids are scheduled for 1.06, so hopefully some battle siege improvements will come then as well.
