Eve Ratings on MMORPG

Oh great, just check out Eve Online's ratings on MMORPG.com... We lost out to WoW. Something tells me that WoW players are trying to undermine us...image

Any comments? I wonder what is really so bad about it to get such a position.

The point is EU should suck more of Bush's swollen balls to convince more Americans to play EVE.

Nothing brings me more joy than the constant hum of my mining lasers as they reduce big rocks into little rocks.  However, I can not say that Eve's rating is unexpected.  In terms of gameplay, eve offers much, but due to the skills system, harsh limitations are quickly enforced.  The true problem is that a Noob, will always be a Noob in comparison to a Beta player.  The beta player will always have significantly more skill than a new player.  As such, a player that activated his account today, will never be a match for a long term account, (both will amass skill points at an equal rate).  So it is no wonder that when new players come to eve, they leave just as quickly because they may feel like they "missed the bus" and will always be a sub-par account.  This may reflect in their rating of the game here on MMORPG.com

This goes for players who think that skill points are like levels in a game where levels don't exist. At 5-6m skill points you can do quite nicely whatever it is you want to do with a character. With 6m skill points you can already have a pretty nicely fit combat pilot for a Battleship, versatile combat pilot with lots of options for PvP, nicely set up skills for some mission running, trading or mining and if you're into manufacture, at 6m skill points you have nothing to be shamed of.

At my own, meager ~10m skill points most of them already go to level 5 skills, or some funky, less critical stuff. Level 5 skills take huge amounts of sps compared to level 4 skills, and the benefits are mainly in prequisites for some specialised skills - not in any ultimate power gains. Considering that at 2m skill points I was already flying a BS and at 3.5m skill points I was flying it well, the advancement from that point hasn't been that remarkable as it was to that point.

Difference to (imnsho inferior) level based MMORPGs the main difference is that the roof is harder to see in EVE. I myself like a game with no visible upper limit to what a character can do and learn, and no amount skill points the beta players are ahead of me wont change the amount of fun I can have in the game. Especially when in PvP a player with 20m is no more invulnerable than me with my 10m skill points.

Oh, and right now EVE has more fanboi points than EQ2. Not that I'd go so low as to get excited about such matters, but.. nyah ;)

EVE has originality, style and something new to offer as right about the first MMORPG since Ultima Online. I don't think it's that strange.

Your logic is flawed. They do acquire skillpoints at approximately the same speed (after the noob gets his learning skills up), but they don't acquire bonuses at the same rate. You can learn the first four levels of a skill faster than you can go from level 4 to 5, and earn 20% bonus at whatever skill, while gong from 4 to 5 only gives you 5% (same as going from 2 to 3, 3 to 4, etc.) So after the noob spends some time evening out essential skills to level 3 or 4, then the veteran will only be ahead by 5-10% which isn't much if the noob has the superior fitting.

While I can see your point in terms of how long it takes to go from a 1-4 level vs. the time it take to train a skill up to level five, I am afraid that I would not go so far as to call my logic "flawed"  The simple truth is this:  Skill points are gained at the same speed (assuming learning skills are equal).  Therfore, a player who started training earlier, will always have more skill points.  For a PVP encounter, every small percentage gained through skills is critical.  Be it a mere 5% for having a level five skill vs. a level 4 skill.

Also mentioned was that a good combat character can be had at around 4-6 million skill points.  I certainly agreee with that.  However, attaining those numbers takes a long time.  (perhaps 4 months?).  Any casual player who just tried the game will not have made it to that point before they rendered their rating.

With that said, please keep in mind what my post was about.  It pertained to the new player who plays for a while then turns in a rating on the game.  As a noob, the game can be utterly frustrating due to the limited things one can do with few skills.  This frustration may cause them to render a less positive review of the game. ( I do not think that this is too far of a stretch).

As for myself, I have been playing this game for almost 9 months.  I love it.  I have tried other games, but I always come back to Eve.  I am with you 100% when you said that you prefer a game with no upper limits.  I too share that enjoyment.   As far as I am concerned, Eve is a 10.

No game no matter how good it is can stay on the top of the ratings at all times. There will always be some new fade or another.

I like most EVE players, will be happy as long as it stays fairly high on the list. So as we all know it is likely to go on and on for sometime.image

I prefer the depth and intensity of eve over any other mmorpg game.

Im about 6 mill SP now and consider myself a pretty decent miner and an very average fighterpilot.
Still, i feel like im just beginning to feel the game, and what i can do with my skills.

I think EVE's rating is good as it is. Its not the best "out there", and far from the worst.
Even though i am not enjoying it so very much, i am still playing cause there are no other game out now that i care to play.. beside WoW, but i cant play that cause it aint released over here, damn it"
Doing some agentmissions, mining some to stock up ores for ships, flyin around.... It feels very laid back, no rush kind of feel.

But it dont give me the joy im wanting. EnB had it, but lost the torch when it got shut down, WoW picked it up! My burning desire to play a game has once again been lit.

EVE will forever be the game in the background, a game that i play casually and relaxed.

I have a feeling EVE will stay online for a very long time, there's nothing like it! ::::28::
