I'm looking for a new MMO. I'm quite a hardcore player, so I can log huge amounts of hours in some weeks, but other weeks I may not get the chance to play much at all, so whatever I choose needs to work for me in that regard.
Basically this is what I'm looking for in an MMO:
* A persistent world
* Crafting that actually means something
* Sandbox that gives me the option of following a storyline should I wish to
* Meaning that the storyline should be somewhat entertaining at least
* A great community, as that's the point of MMO's - community!
* Graphics that don't make me want to run away screaming (I'm not a graphics whore though)
* Polish
* Developers that update the game regularly
I previously thought Vanguard would be this game, but alas it isn't (for me personally). Ryzom is awesome, but I find myself getting bored and directionless at times. Project Entropia (now Entropia Universe) used to fit the bill quite nicely, minus one or two of the above points, but it's become quite the deposit-fest these days.
Any other suggestions? I miss the feeling of being excited about logging on and mucking about with good friends I've made online. It seems everyone is either extremely "meh" or just downright rude these days.

have you tried Asheron's Call? it is an older game...

Can't be sure if you the graphics are on par with your thinking, since they are anime-style.. but they are easily the best anime style I've seen. Big world, definantly a good community, or at least a fair site better a great mass of the others I've tried. It's still in Beta so updates are a given, but the GM's are open and friendly and daily events are truly daily events. The one place where I think it fails is crafting, as I didn't like it. As a self-termed hardcore player, you might not like that it's f2p, but as your hours are irregular, that might be to your advantage. It's Ether Saga Online, and in my opinion easily the top five of f2p's if not number one on that list.
seen as F2P is not a requirement for you, i have an MMO that answers to 6 of your 8 points.
Ryzom
persistent world: yes
crafting that actually means something:
http://www.mmorpg.com/blogs/katriell/052009/3747_How-crafting-in-Ryzom-works
Sandbox: yes
Storyline: not really, the game doesn't progress through storyline quests, there's about 1/2 events per week that progress the story. (or that's the goal anyway, atm it's more like 1 event per week, but they're starting to get things rolling again after the "recent" takeover by a new company)
great community: Ryzom has arguably the BEST community out there, never found the likes of it in any other game. At the moment the community is small, but Ryzom has always been a nyche game. Usually veteran players will drop what they're doing to help newer ones.
graphics: decent, they were awesome when the game first came out, now they're still decent, in a cartoony style, without trying to be real, but very original, never seen anything like it anywhere else.
polish: nope, 3 languages available: german, french and english, although of course there are polish players with whom you can chat/team up/guild up.
developpers that update the game regularly: past 4 months Ryzom has had 3 updates (well, 3rd is to be released on monday).
Ryzom is a classless game, which means u could master everything if u have a lot of time, (and i mean A LOT of time) and by no means easy. Steep learning curve (good tutorial island though, read through the quests there, they give good explanations of quite a few features).
The game also contains its own scenario builder, character customisation is awesome, and you create your own skills/spells, made from "stanza's" you buy with skillpoints earned through levelling a certain skill...

Give it a try mate, free trial of 3 weeks, no other limits but the time. I've personally played Ryzom since open beta almost 5 years ago now, and never regretted it.
Hehe, as I said in my first post - I've tried it numerous times, but I've never managed to get into it for some reason. I think it's because I felt completely lost all of the time. I had no idea what to do, so I'd level combat and harvesting, but that felt like a non-sensical grind and that wasn't fun =/ I enjoyed the crafting etc. and the community was amazing, to make up for it. I think I just felt sorta lonely in this big wide world with no one around and having no clue what to do. Do people still group etc?
(I meant polish as in "I polished the table" haha, not the language. I'm English so it's all good =D

To the others - thanks for the suggestions. I'll check them out!
oh, that kind of polish, lol
oh well, in Ryzom people usually set their own goals, u could do all missions or quests, but u'd be spending your lifetime doing that, especially if u need to find mission materials... i guess Ryzom is like EVE when it comes to that, in EVE if u want to do missions u're always repeating the same ones as well to gain the EVE equivalent of "fame"...
Hehe.
So what would your average day in Ryzom consist of?
depends what i feel like doing, but in general:
log on
chat a bit in uni, see if somebody's doing something interesting i can join doing
if yes --> team up
if not --> check the Ring
if ring scenario up --> test ring scenario
if not --> trek to one of the tribes that distaste me and kill me on sight, find their NPC's that are not in the camp and do missions for those to improve my fame with them so i can actually enter their camp
check again for teams
if yes --> team up
if no --> level a lower skill on my own, or run about checking what places contain what raw materials, marking them on my map, or have a look around in the game world, race to give somebody a rez just for the fun of it, level some crafting skills i'll be able to use later on to help other people, create my own ring scenario for people to test, try to find people to test a previously created, half-finished ring scenario, check if some lower level bosses are up, kill them if they are,...
i could go on
but through it all, i'll be chatting, and if i'm solo and i find somebody doing something he/she could use help with and wants help with, there i go. Always chatting in character, Ryzom was just made for RP
I never try to grind my highest level skills on my own, that's a sure way to get bored. Ryzom offers the ability to do everything with 1 character, so i do, i level in team what is appropriate to not kill xp but actually be helpful. I often walk around in Ryzom's beautiful game world to find places i've never been, sights i've never seen.
One day i decide to level up my ranged cuz it's good for pvp, the next day i change my mind and go back to my old plan to master all melee skills, etcetera. There's no end to my ideas of what to do
I behave like a child in the sandbox that is Ryzom, i use my imagination and then do what i thought of
