You're going to get answers saying yes or no. Give the free trial a spin and you'll have a much better idea if it's worth it for you versus the opinions of others.
Current: None Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
Although I complain all the time I would say it is the best game in the market right now, or maybe the less worst depending on your point of view. Depends what you are looking for as well.
lots of content with more being added on a regular basis
lends itself to a variety of playing styles
pretty world
lots of player customization available as far as clothing and dyes etc
the bad -
not much really bad . NPC's look really stupid when walking down a hill and the hats and helmets are butt ugly are about the worst things I can think of.
Download the trial and see if you like it or not. If you are a PvP player then it probably wont be "worth it". Its not perfect but when it comes to PvE then LotrO is probably the best MMO out there.
If WoW = The Beatles and WAR = Led Zeppelin Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
Combat - if you're used to hitting as fast as you can click than you won't like LotRO's system. Here you have cooldown timers, certain moves open up other moves, weapon speed is taken into account etc..... Because of that some people call it slow.
Quest vs Grind - it's very much a quest type game, although you do get xp for just killing stuff. Depends on how you like to level and why you're leveling.
Pvp - what they call Monster Play, which is outside the normal game. I think it was probably an after thought added for the Pvp'ers. And you have sparring (duels) which can be fun I guess, but seem to be dominated by the younger crowd just running around wanting to fight and won't take NO for an answer.
Visually it's a very nice game with the exception of the toon's. Backgrounds are great, toon's so-so. Nice professions mix. Good quest rewards (at my level high-teens). Very nice story line / quest plots. Ability to do the other races quests so you have a number of one's to do.
Population - Certain servers have lot's of players, the others are a little lighter in numbers so you'll need to do your research and pick a server wisely.
My biggest complaint would be with the movement as I come from SWG and enjoy the mouse lock view, moving combo. I've finally come up with a method to do it here but involves holding down one of the mouse buttons which does get tiring after awhile. And if that's my only complaint than I'm doing pretty good
Yes, it's worth it although like another said I would give the free trial a spin to decide for yourself. It has great lore and from a PvE perspective it is one of the best games on the market. It isn't a PvP game by any means though so if that is your interest then this isn't the game for you.
It has a rather friendly community that is helpful to newcomers. The game can be an issue on some of the lesser populated servers when it comes to grouping so I would suggest trying the game out on either Elendilmir, Brandywine, or Lanroval unless you'll be starting the game with some friends. Of course, if you do some huting for a kin on the forums grouping on the lesser pop servers certainly isn't impossible but it can be a pain that really ends up frustrating some people on the smaller servers.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
I'd give the free trial a go like others have suggested. If you enjoy PvE with a large world to explore with thousands of quests to choose from and gimp PvP then this may be the game for you. I enjoy it though I wish there was more of a PvP component.

If your looking for:
Great PvE
Great storyline driven quests that actually impact the environment from time to time.
Very good population, bustling cities and hunting zones.
Good crafting which is actually useful.
Grouping throughout the game which is also a must
Great RP'ing
Then Lord of the Rings is worth a trial atleast.
LOTR isn't
RvR/PvP
Constant dueling with younglings
the good-
polished
lots of content with more being added on a regular basis
lends itself to a variety of playing styles

Kind of depends on the games you played before.

SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter
