Hi. I am an AOC player and upgrading my computer for now and future games. I just purchased a few things and would love some feedback, wondering if I did ok...

MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum Motherboard CPU Bundle

AMD Phenom 9500 Processor

EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Video Card - 896MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0 x16, SLI Ready, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV, Dual VGA Support

OCZ SLI-Ready Dual Channel 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory (2x2048MB) (Should I have gone for 8gig or is that pointless?)

I got a couple fans, grease, software blah blah and paid about $450 total.

Thanks!

nVidia wasn't a good choice for that particular Mobo and game.  AoC plays better with an AMD video card.  Also it comes with a Phenom 9500.  It is the weakest of the Phenom line and comes with the TLB error.

For the same price you could have gotten the AMD version of that Mobo, an AMD Phenom II 720 X3, and an AMD HD4870.

I'd agree except for the X3.

The X3 (i.e. triple core) is the same as the Pentium 3 was for Intel; the bastard middle child noone wanted.

Either go X2 or spend a tiny bit more than the X3 ( or the same or less depending where you shop ) on an X4.

I don't really find this to be true.. if you look at the game benchmarks an X3 usually benches the same as an X4 because even games that are optimized for multi-core still don't have enough threads for all 4 cores. This places it ahead of the X2's and relatively close to the X4's in gaming, but I haven't checked the new Phenom II X2 550's benchmarks much yet.

The Phenom II X2 550 usually do better then the Athlon II 7500; but that extra core on the X3's helps do background tasks as most games are designed for 2 cores or less and reliant on the GPU with the exception of Grand Theft Auto IV.

I think you did fine for the money spent. You are ok with 4gb Ram too, probably find the game uses about 30% of the RAM.

Have you put anything together yet?

It really depends on what you paid for the motherboard and CPU, I see you had them in a bundle. AMD has had a few bundle deals the past couple months.

The best single high end cards run best for AoC, but in the mid range and dual proc GPUs with AMD are currently favoured for AoC.

I have to disagree with your comments on the X3, I own one of these and it gives excellent performance for excellent value. It is a black edition CPU meaning I can OC to 3.6GHZ stable on stock air cooling, for less than an E8400 I get better performance and an extra core and I can use DDR3. The next cheapest AM3 CPU to do that for me is X4 810 which the X3 720 BE out performs on many benchmarks.

As for no one wanting one the X3 probably sells more stock and has a greater turn over than anyother phenom II, going by Amozon.co.uk and how often the X3 goes out of stock, new stock comes in and is out of stock again.
