In the US, based on longeitivity and sales, that would be EQ. I understand in the Asian market, there is something... that looks like Lineage to americans, but I don't know the name.

WRONG...
1. Lineage 1 - 2.1 million (peaked at 3 million and dropped down after Lineage 2 came)
2. Lineage 2 - 1 million (basically just took from Lineage 2 as graph showed 1's numbers falling once 2 launched.
3. FF11 - 650k The research done and posted here I believe had FF11 around this number but dont recall exactly
4. EQ1 - 400k+ Used to be 500k but dropping recently
And of course this doesnt count the newest mmorpgs and how they effect the top games. WoW probably has 400k+ and EQ2 200k+ and surely some of those are defected from other games listed here.
i played L2 beta i believe, thoroughly unimpressed me, it sucker, but i didn't get to the castle sieiges and shit and hardcore PvP which prob woulda been fun, but i got tired of it too quickly
Lineage I and Lineage II are #1 in sales because they are the defacto standard for China. Whichever one you want to claim is legitimate
Every net-bar over here has Lineage I and/or II loaded on the computer and you can buy gaming cards for these games at 7-11. FFXI is also big here and you can also get game time at the local convenience store. China has a population of over 1 billion people. Taiwan has 22 million and it's full of kids who go to schoolafter they get out of school and their only escape from the tedium of their homework filled lives is to log-on to "Heaven" (that's the Chinese title of Lineage) and PK some poor newb or whack the same spawn half a trillion times. After writing the same characters and vocabulary words 20 times, what's a little grind to them?
I think EQ and WoW just needed to market their games in Asia and they'd have just as many subscribers. I haven't even SEEN EQ or WoW over here in the computer stores. (I'm in Taiwan.) If there were dedicated Chinese versions of the games (with Chinese voice-overs the way there are English and soon to be German and French for EQ) and game cards you could buy in 7-11 my guess is that you'd see much bigger numbers of Asian players switching games.
But I expect WoW to do better here. Seems most Chinese students I've taught are the kind who want to level fast and kill MoB's rather than quest or collaborate much. But maybe I'm missing a serious portion of the population.

You are right. WoW is preparing a Chinese and Korean version of the game that will be released over there sometime in the future.
So i do expect WoW to rise to be number 1 at least in Western market. as for the Asian one that is tough to say. WoW is a western made game that focus on individuality and soloing. You sure can group and have raids, pvp etc, but nowhere near what Lineage 1 and 2 did by making THAT the , practically, only point in the game.
I've come to believe that team-work and games where what it count is coordination and collaboration between a great number of people to obtain things has a great success in the Asian market while in the Western market it is more succesful a game that focus more on letting YOU, the single guy, or a relativly small group of heroes, to do significant acts in the world, PLUS Western market seems to value a lot differences in how characters look.
Westerners do not like games in wich everybody looks exactly the same or there are just 2-3 possibilities in choice.

Lineage 1 is and has been since 98, the most successful MMORPG worldwide (not to mention my favorite MMORPG so far ^^)
Lineage 2 is in second place but is growing fairly quick... it could very well take 1st place sometime soon...

Lineage I looks like its in its own league, although it looks like its decreasing. Think EQII or WoW will be in the running in a couple months/year?
