I'm a chinese player on Aion CN servers so plz excuse me if my English is bad. (i.e. i don't know the exact translation of places & items & profession.)
I've read some of the negative reviews since the western Aion beta release but they mainly came from ppl that is lv 10-15. They aren't even close to the core theme of Aion yet so I feel the need to let ppl know what to look forward in later levels.
Other than graphics the first refreshing thing is flying in aion. You can fly after LV10. To be exact, as soon as u r lv 9 u can get a mission and by completing u automatically obtain full experience to level up to 10. Then u can teleport to the capital to speak with some npcs, After that it will be the 1st time when you see a downward steeping hill you can press "space" twice and see yourself gliding down instead of jumping down. It looks truly amazing and it feels very realistic.
More details about flying: 1. when there is a cliff, if u jump down u may kill ur self or down to 10% hp depending on the height. but if u press "space" once in air u will be gliding and u can get down slowly without hurting urself. Pressing "w" during gliding u will head downward; otherwise u can hit some air flow that take u higher (useful occasionally).
2.every map (other than newbie map and capital) has two location that allowing flying. flying is different then gliding. gliding u follow the air flow, flying u control 6 directions (up/down plus North/south/east/west). Believe me, it's much more intesting than just 4 directions and a lot of times it tests ur vision perception: u think it's close but it may not be, vice versa. you can pick material while flying too and some materials can only be obtained in air.
3. once u get to the lv20 area PVP starts. since i'm already an experience player, it takes me at most 20hr to get to lv20 (2hr to lv10,6-7hr to lv16, and so on), and no i don't do non-stopping lv ups, i eat sleep and go to parties. LV20 area is the first map that allows player from the other nation to come in pvp. So if u see ppl name in red and their lv in "??", they are from the enemy nation and u can use skills on them. If u r creeping and didn't notice them u can be killed by them.
4. Once u r lv25 u do mission to get permission to enter the PVP area- the ABYSS. the mission includes a test for ur flying skills. if u r new it could take u 2-3 times to pass it. ABYSS has 3 areas bot (lv 25-34) top(35-45) mid (lv50). You CAN fly Everywhere in Abyss as long as you have enuf flying time. The best intesresting PVP experience starts here other than the traditional 4 directions, you also need to take top and below into consideration. When I was first in abyss i got killed a few time without noticing where the enemy is--because they are right above me, so make sure u get the habit of looking at the sky once every while.
5. Flying the is most important skill in abyss, some professions get bonus attack in air. Abyss is like an arena where u kill enemy and get honour points. u can exchange very good equipments using these points, and many other usages. Because of flying, some of ur land PVP strategies may not work efficiently so u have a lot more factors to consider. and u can out-fly ppl if u have longer flying time(equipment & potions), faster flying speed(by equipment) than them. if u run out of flying time in air u can die but there are ways around it and it just take too long to explain in detail. Say u r chased by 10 ppl, and if u r good at flying, u can keep flying, some of them won't chase because they don't have enuf flying time, some may die because they run out of flying time, so at last maybe only 2-3 are chasing and they are far in distance, chances are u can take them out 1 by 1. It's much harder to keep up with flying then running on ground.
You can PVP as much as u want in Abyss. and u can go to other nation for PVP and missions (give very good items) thru portals. One of the balance facter is that if u go to the other nation, the portals have level limitations so if u ur lv40 u r not allowed to use lv30 portal to go to low level maps. however u can go to lv40 maps and run to their lv30 maps(it's like 1000 miles).
At lv 42 u get a very good skill but not everybody is able to get it because it's a rare drop from instance (i'm lv45 mage but i still haven't got mine, bad luck >_< ). You can buy them off AH but some professions' books cost u a fortune.
most monsters in aion you only need to solo. some calls help from other monsters, it's a little hard to kill 2 simultaneously and it's very dangerous if 3. but u can run, some chase a long way some don't, just choose a good path to run, don't lure more monters and don't run into dead end. if the map is flyable u can run by flying but some monsters can shoot u down.
starting from lv16 there are elite monsters (u can tell by looking at their HP bar, it looks a lot fancier than normal creeps), a group of 1 tank 1 healer 2 dps can take down 1, but u feel safer in group of 6 because elite monster can come in groups too. They give huge exp very good drops and some is mandatory for quests. Archers and elementalists may be able to solo 1 melee elite monster, it will take 2-3 minutes comparing to normal monsters maybe 20 sec.
The massive pvp starts when it's time to conquer the castles in Abyss (i don't know what exactly they are called in english version), that's where u'll see hundreds of ppl from both nations. It's a war that will involve many guilds or even the whole race. it's just not something that my english language level can describe. It will require much more organization and stretagy than a WOW instance. By participation u get reward depending on ur damage/healing, u can get medals which are required for exchanging high level Abyss equipments.One can be really proud by conquering/keeping a castle successfully. It's a mark the ur guild is one of the strongest in the nation. Crafting is essential in Aion, too. Potion, scroll, food, etc can play a very important factor in PVP. crafted equipment is better than normal monster drops but require some luck.
There are really lots of things u can do in aion and u really can feel very satisfied from pvp and castle wars. The worst things happening in CN server are:
1. bots everywhere in nation maps, u can't find any monster and it takes hours to complete a quest.
2. speed hacks in pvp area, they can kill u in a blink of an eye, they can fly forever, and they have no CD when heal debuff
3. material collecting hacks, 100% success rate, collect 3-5 times in 1 sec with no cd
4. Cheating Abyss honour points: guilds from both nations organize time and place so that guild members go in pairs, u kills me 5 times, I kill u 5 times; then change to another pair, and so on. u can get 20k-30k honour points in less than 2 hours. the higher abyss level, the more points.
Without the above, I like Aion very much. I'm looking forward to Aion opening in north america and I truly hope botter and cheats are severely penalized in western servers.
P.S. I hate SDO, the distributer of Aion in China, for doing nothing about bots and cheats. It's the stupid SDO that ruined Aion. I'm never going to play any of SDO's games ever.

You are right. I had so much fun in the Abyss and I had so much fun at level 25. But the game gets more and more fun!!!

It's sad that China has so many bots and hacks, but it has nothing to do with NCSoft as they sold it to SDO. No game company other than a Chinese one can launch games in China lol.

Some points that struck me after reading this OP:
1- Your English is very good.
2- I was thinking about creating a thread focusing on the Abyss as most of the people hating on the game don't know anything about it, but couldn't because I'm kinda lazy, and because your thread popped up, you explained most of the good stuff, thanks for that.
3- There were some spoilers in your thread, that sucks for a lot of people looking forward to some surprises!
4- You're definitely right in saying that botting and hacking can kill this game (any game in fact). I'm hoping NCwest handles botting/hacking properly. I'm confident it will be much better handled than SDO (obviously).
Good post overall, well written and sure to help a lot of people figure out what a big part of the game is about.

Im not delivering mail and killing rats for 25 levels to get to an endgame pvp system where cheating is rampant. I dealt with that crap in WoW arena, Im not dealing with it again.

Funny how you are willing to cancel a pre-order(which you most likely never had to begin with) over something that happens in any PVP Game like this. WIn trading happens, period. There is very little any company can do against it, and the ones that do usually end up making it worse.
I'm sure the community will be a better place then china, and it's pretty sad someone would base their opinion on someone elses without giving it a shot.

Win trading trivializes the spirit of competition. This isn't a minor gripe, or nit pick; this is cheating. Are you saying cheating is Ok because there's "no way to prevent it". (incidentally, there are measures that can be taken to curb cheating, like for example: not having an asinine grind system assosciated with killing players of the opposing faction.)

If win trading happens, it happens. Don't confuse opinion with fact. Botting is rampant in China, as is win trading. To think that it wont be bad here is naive and quite frankly, delusional. Have you already forgotten how bad lineage 2 is?
The game starts off with one of the most long winded and tedious early games I've ever witnessed, now I'm supposed to grind through 25 levels of mail delivery and hog killing to compete with a bunch of giant guilds who trade kills to further reinforce their supremacy? As much fun as that sounds, I'll have to pass... But hey, wtf do I know. I dont agree with you; so that must mean Im a troll.
Well if the real game starts at 25, the next playtest weekend should start us out at 25. If the devs clearly won't do that....

You are basing your decisions on someone who played Aion in China(1.0) The game in Korea is nothing like the one in china, and the bots, hackers, and cheating is almost non existant in Korea. This is why people such as yourself should read up more before preaching your doomsday posts.
The game in China will be nothing like the game in EU/NA just like Aion in korea is nothing like China. China has ruined their game and they did not bother fixing it, they don't care enough to fix it. There is a reason why It is coming later in EU/NA and why NCWest is going to be leading the way.

they already took precaution against this in korea if you kill the same person twice in a time you will get less abys point and third its almost zero etc etc
China is 1.0, those things were patched already in Korea.
Again, don't judge anything other than the game mechanics from previous patches.

You just admitted it happens in korea. Diminishing returns can be worked around. Furthermore, the fact that this wasn't even implemented as a counter measure early in development gives me little faith these people have a good idea on how to design a PVP system.
Furthermore, what proof is there that our version will have the (supposed) same level of anti cheating measures that the Korean version has (that will do little in the long run, due to the use of Gameguard). The companies word? Of course, why would THEY oversell this? What would they have to gain?

He reported things that actually happen. Facts. I'm also basing my descision in the beta Im participating in. It's boring, it's generic, and it's chock full of the same garbage that you can even get for free these days (runes of magic).
Doomsday preaching? When have I even said this game will do poorly? It wont do poorly because it's a safe little cash cow for NCsoft to milk. People will willingly waste their lives on this tripe, I wont deny that. I, and many others just dont care for it. My opinion is different from yours, THUS my choice is POOR and UNENLIGHTENED. Get over yourself; and for the love of God; stop defending this game as if it was your mother.
You don't even need to make threads llike this OP........ Aion is already big in Asia, and will be even more massive in US/EU..... i play on chinese server as well, it's much better than any MMO on market

I played Lineage 2 for 3 months and just got fed up with them.
if the best starts at 25... why dont we all start at level 25 then.. why pay for a game that sucks from 1 to 25??? doesnt make sense,, the fun should start at level 1..

1-25 doesn't suck..it just isn't as good as 25 I'm assuming. i played to 18 over the weekend during beta and i enjoyed lvling and would like to do so again as Asmodian or as another class as Elyos (maybe even same class retail).
man you are so right. PlayNC is small and a game like this .. well look at kor, china.. bot city.. and they do nothing to stop it. If you have NEVER played there then you have no clue.
Oh HAHA the game does not pic up at level 25. Your going to be doing nothing but simple quest over and over yes you have crafting its ok .. but lol easy but what killed it for me there was BOTS..

Indeed, it's very informative, and kinda ridiculizes the 'WoW clone' myth, along with the 'Korean Grinder' one.
Tsk, tsk. China and their bots/goldfarmers are everywhere. You CAN'T kill them ><.
There have been many claims made by NCSoft that the patch 1.1 fixes a lot of the exploits found on the Chinese server that everyone is complaining about.
If only that guy who "canceled his preorder" had bothered to read a few other threads too he'd have known that by the time anyone in NA sees this game on a NA server there will be a very different experience.
One that none of us can claim we know the details of, we can only speculate.
Hopefully NCSoft is correct in their statements that they've found a way to stop the cheating.
I can recall seeing a lot of goldsellers on GW. I know that NCsoft took care of them.
Compared to Blizzard, NCsoft does great things and stay close to their customers.
