How much memory is needed for the game?

I have a great computer; pentium 4 hyper threading, radeon 9200, 512 mb ram. I don't have a lot of space on drive c, though, and I need to know how much EQ2 is going to take up before I buy it. Does anyone know? image

I'm sorry, but that isn't a "great computer" in terms of EQ2-ishness. You need at least a gig of ram to be able to play with decent graphics without low FPS. And your vid card, sorry to say, is quite shite too.

Yup, doesnt matter how fast your processor is, if you have only 512 MB of RAM and only a 9200 then you will lag..probably even on the lowest settings

Hehe thats not true :) my friends computer is a 3.0ghz HT Extreme Edition with 520 ram and a GeForcefx5200 128mb 160 gig hd and not sure on sound but i can run this game on Balanced with no lag and 1 step up from balanced with little lag. All my friend would need is another 512 ram and a 256mb graphics card and with the right tweaks he could prolly go all they way before the Extreme Quality. This is only in prediction. so this guys computer is Better than Average :)

Sorry, maybe I was a little bit too quick with my judgements. However My brother has an AMD Athlon 2500+, and a Geforce FX 5600 pro but he only had 512 and he had stutter, he got 1 gig and he was fine

Yeah I've noticed I get alot of annoying hiccups in the game because I only have 512mb ram. I'd say ram is extremely important in EQ2.

  • JackdogJackdog Member UncommonPosts: 6,321

I have ran the game fine on a 1.7 mz P4, 512 2700 DDR, and a ti 4200/128 . That is at the lowest setting of course but it still looked and performed better than most contemporay MMORPG's.

Extra memory did not add to video performance in any appreciable way for me at least. I did a experiment on my main machine adding memory in stages of 512/1024/1536 and 2048. All it did was decrease zoning times between the 512 and the 1024 experiments and another miniscule gain in zoning time between the 1024 and 1536 experiment.

Anything above 1024 is a waste of money unless you are planning on running many many programs in the background. FPS was pretty consistent for me in all configurations. Nothing scientific here just running around and zoning in the same areas while adding memory. Settings were at balanced and high quality defaults.

    edit

For what it is worth I do get the occasional hiccup myself however I think it is more the database server lagging a tad since most of the times it seems to happen while I am in a crafting instance or when looting. PC population can be anywhere from where I have the entire instance to myself or it can be crowded, which is why it is either A) my ISP lagging or B) the database server lagging.

    How would a
    AMD 1800+
    1024 PC 2100 Memory
    Geforce 5700 256mb

Thats my step bros computer, we want to play together but I dont know how he will run the game. Im guessing fine at medium settings. The CPU is the only thing that kinda sucks.

I'm assuming all of the statements here about running "lag-free" is referring to everywhere except inside Qeynos?

Everyone I've spoken with seems to lag in Qeynos, no matter what their system specs are.

Hmm.. maybe it's the server I'm on.. It's been "FULL" for along time now (Najena).. Maybe there's just too many people in town at once on that server.

Imperatorian, I'd be curious to hear what system you're running if you get no lag.  I am running a 2.4 with 1 gig and an old 4200ti with 64 megs.  It actually runs EQ2 pretty decently on medium settings, but I do get some lag in the cities (but less than I get in EQ1 POK).  Anyway, I'm going to upgrade it a bit and I'd like to get a handle on what's working well for people.

His 9200 will suffice. I play with a P4 2Ghz 1024MB RAM w/ an ATI 9200 PRO 128MB and I get freat performance. Everything is set to medium. Your system will suffice if you up the RAM by at least 256MB, but best up it 512MB. As for the question of how the game looks on a 9200, my sig was taken from one of my screenshots and I posted some screenies in the topic titled "Screenshot Request" here in the general EQ2 forum.

a really good eq2 pc would be something like this...

    AMD 64bit XP 3.0Ghz

    1.5 G DDR Ram

    GF FX 6800 256 DDR V-Ram

    SB Audigy 2 ZS

the more memory you got the better it will be.

ok, I have 2 comments. First, what is this guy talking about? There is no AMD 64 XP, and no AMD chip has hit 3 Ghz. I'm assuming you meant an AMD 64 3000+, which is 2 Ghz.

Well, anyway, I have a nice puter:

    AMD 64 3400+ 1MB L2 Cache (2.2 Ghz)

    Asus K8V Deluxe

    2 GB Crucial PC 3200

    BFG GeForce 6800 GT @ 400/1100

Audigy 2 Zs, and so on and so forth. Point is, I still lag a bit in the cities. Just a tiny bit, but you can definitely notice it. I would love to know what system the guy who said he doesn't lag in cities is running.
