Beta testers, got some questions for you...

maddogmikiemaddogmikie Member Posts: 349

First question is, if you die, will you lose xp? (even delvl when you die like what lineage did?)

And is the map wide open field like Lineage or are there loading screen between zone to zone? (I can understand loading screen for dungeon enterance like WoW, but I want the field to be wide open.)

Lastly, is the game worth playing? Should I buy it when it releases? or should I wait for "Blade & Soul"

yes, but you can pay some cash to have something like 60% of it given right back to you.

for the most part, yes.  I only got to the 2nd zone but I didn't encounter loading zones, can't say for the rest of the game though.

If you liked Lineage2? odds are yes, but this one is complete personal opinion so I'll say, the game is "solid" not good or bad.  its well made, mostly bug-free, so it really comes down to your taste in games.

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

Yes, you lose XP for dieing.  You can go to a "Soul Healer", and for a small fee get your XP back.  Personally, I kinda like it.  It adds more consequences to death, makes you be a little more careful.

The worlds are huge and wide open, not a lot of loading.

The game was a blast, I really enjoyed it.  It's the first MMO I've been able to get into in the last year, ever since I burned myself out on WoW.  It's definitely worth playing.

Yes you die if you lose exp, you do not delevel I believe.  You can buy that lost exp back at the healer right next to you.

Open field from one edqe of the map to the other

People have mixed feelings here, if your looking for a new revolutionary game, this is not it.  It's just a game that supposedly took the best ideas from multiple mmo's and created it's own.  Blade & Soul would be your revolutionary game, this is just a polished relic.

I agree with this poster, no loading screens at all from 1-20, and you can buy back the little experience you lose for a small fee.

Amazing game imo, destroys WoW if you're tired of the whole expansion, grind PvE shit, arenas suck type attitude. Aion PvP is refreshing and the Abyss point system is quite nice.

Yes, you lose xp, but you can buy back a portion of it through the Soul Healers.

It's more like Lineage II, no screen loading. But technically speaking, the screen loading occurs when you 'teleport' to a new region. Say, from level 1-10 you stay in region A, after finishing all the quests, you teleport to region B for your level 10-20, something to that effect.

To me, it's a mixture of Lineage II and WoW. Personally, i think it's good game. All quests are well laid, easy to locate the quest spots, much better than in any other games such as WoW. Graphics are cool, very beautiful yet very polygon efficient, just like Lineage II. And it's the first game you can flight and combat freely in the air.

I would even throw in a bit of Guild Wars in that the lighting quality in the Elyos starter area felt a bit like GW as well as how my character moved.

I think it's important to point out (so that the op is not dissapointed) that the starter area (Elyos at least will see what the asmos area is like on the 19th) is a bit more linear. However this area does server as a tutorial of sorts in many ways. Once you get into the larger world after lvl 10 the world is open.

I need to clarify the "openess" of the Aion game world.  For the most part, no there arent any instances.. no loading screens etc.  The world is seemless.

However, the map is not completely open.  There are artificial terrain walls that are impassable.  Most areas have a completely open feel to them, but some areas you'll notice the confines of it with the terrain keeping you from going from point A to point B without travelling through a specific route. Some areas have a very linear "Guild Wars" feeling to it in how the map is layed out.

Now, this isnt coming from a beta tester.  This is coming from someone whos been playing retail and plays asmodian.  I didnt take part in the NA beta, and I dont play elyos.  I dont know if anyone in the beta experienced this or not.. but I will tell you it exists and I wouldnt be surprised if its on both races.

Hi, I'm in the process of downloading Aion, but it has been 2 hrs. Is this normal?

This is my first beta test and I'm kinda lost. I have a high end comp w/dsl and it's still downloading.

    Any suggestions ????

It was normal for me. I have a standard DSL line and it took all night and a bit of the next day. However, there were probably thousands of other people downloading as well. As the next beta (preview event) is next week, I think you have plenty of time.

I would concur with Rayxor. Going from area to area was seemless but there are some invisable walls here and there and from my limited experience some of the areas were sort of "guild wars " like as far as acting as a way to lead you to one place or other.

I know that I was thinking "hey, this is actually pretty open". But then I loaded Vanguard and that really does bring it home as to what "open" can really be.

Still, I don't see it as being a problem as from what I saw, the game felt open "enough".

Ya the game does feel open to me also, and Im really enjoying it.  I figured that soon enough some of the Aion haters would see this thread and make a comment about some of its maps being linear.  I guess I wanted to beat them to the punch

but I definitely agree with you sovrath, it does feel open enough for me too.  The game brings a lot of other things to the table that even the most open games lack like superior animations that react to weather effects and environment.  The ability to replicate stats to gear so you can choose its appearance etc.  very fun game so far.

If you die you lose money, gold, gil, cash, whatever it is called

second of all, there's a loading screen between LARGE zones, but each ZONE is huge and there isn't a loading screen in the actual zones. It is wide open, because you can fly.

And, the game isn't worth playing if you don't like to grind, end of story.

If thats the way you see it, that a game isnt worth buying because it has "grinding" then WoW isnt worth buying, Warhammer isnt worth buying, hell no game is worth buying, every game has a grind, meaning you grind quests, grind pvp, grind mobs, grind dungeons, if you really think grinding is a bad thing, then you shouldnt be playing mmos because all games have a grind in it, and having to kill stuff to level doesnt mean you shouldnt buy the game, not every game is going to spoon feed you 80 levels in a week like WoW did.

lol, that is seriously funny! I need to download that.

Though I disagree with Syno's assessment that one needs to like grind in order to play Aion (Lineage 2 was a grind, Aion, not so much) I wonder if he is making the leap in that if one wants to recover the xp that is lost on death then one needs to pay a soul healer. Therefore "losing money". I think that is what he was trying to say.

lol.. I'm still finding that vid funny!

The initial download is for aion.exe which is a new version of the NCLauncher.  (As of last weekend older versions do not show Aion as a listed game, even if you have an active key on your account)  It should take a few seconds to a minute.

Once you get the launcher started, it is downloading a 5.713 GIG file, so it will take some time.  If you press "install game" or "play now" (the big button on the bottom left of the launcher) a dialog box pops up that will show how far along you are.  The numbers up top XXX.XX are minutes and seconds, so 300 minutes = 5 hours.  This will bounce but in my experience is within 15-20 minutes of being accurate from start to finish.

    {assuming you are downloading the NA/EU version}

As for the OP, no one else can tell you if the game is worth playing.  You will either like it or not, and unless I sneak into yor bedroom and hook your exposed brain to a large machine I have no idea what you like.

My opinion is it is a great game, just ignore the current engrish translations, because the version they are testing (least last weekened) is NOT the version that will go live.  As such don't feel guilty to just play and not give feedback.

  • vidiotkingvidiotking Member Posts: 587

If you like your standard MMO fair, then you will prolly like Aion. It did everything well, better than just well even, but nothing you haven't seen before. I thought the grafix were awsome, especially the character models and armor. The flying I could do in the preview weekend was minimal, but was kewl when I could do it.

I would recommend it. I'm trying to get some friends to come along for the ride.
