Controls for FFXIV

Will the PC controls be like Final Fantasy XI or will they changed it to WASD? I can't seem to get used to Final Fantasy XI controls so I stopped playing it after the first week. Or is their a way to change it?

I dont think this information has been discussed anything you read will be speculation. If I were guessing you wont find this out until its close to release.

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
    Now Playing: N/A
    Worst MMO: FFXIV
    Favorite MMO: FFXI

There is a way to change the contorls on FFXI.

I'm sure FFXIV will have updated controls as the interface for FFXI was for the PS2. This is also coming out for the PC at launch so yeah it's speculation but I'm sure it will. And again you can change them in FFXI anyway.

FYI there is a setting in the game called "Compact Keyboard" which uses the WASD format under the config menu in-game.

yeah the controls in XI were a bit hard for me as well at first...even after a while I still couldn't adjust with the way they have the controls for casting spells or using skills.... I'm just that untalented lol

There might have been a way to change that but I either couldn't figure it out of maybe I was just blind heh

I hope it would be a little easier this time....and if not, I guess I will have to try again and adjust to the controls!

Call me crazy I love to use the gamepad and FFXI is one of the very few PC games and the only mmo were it's easy to set up.

    /agree

You have to remember, FFXI was built for the PS2.  So naturally using a controller/gamepad is a lot better.

But, I also was able to use the keyboard very well. :P  Oh god switching from FFXI's keyboard style to the standard 'wsad' was hard.

I originally started on the PS2, so when I went to the PC I was looking for a way to play with a controller.  If they decide to use the macro system again, instead of the now popular hotbars, I'm sure we will be able to use controllers efficiently in FFXIV.

Again I might sound crazy, I don't like hotbars they clog up my screen ^_^ At least with FFXi you get a very minimalistic UI. I know a lot of people hated it but I'm the type that tries to reduce as much info as I can on my screen. I really like being able to see everything in the scenery. :)

They will change the controls for the pc version to make it pc friendly for sure, there has been so much talk about that since FF XI came out that there is no way they wouldn't.

I am exactly the same as you - hotbars make me feel like I'm riding a tricycle. In FFXI I prefer using the transparent window option. Although, sometimes it hurts my eyes when I'm in Valkurm Dunes in the day.

Judging by the trend of Final Fantasy games, I'm sure FFXIV will also get a minimalistic UI. The good part is this time around you'll be looking at even better graphics.

I can bet money that FFXIV will not be played with a mouse. Well you can, but it'll be like playing FFXI with a mouse, which is about as bad as breaking an arm.

I wonder how many options we'll have as far as movement. Will we be able to crouch, sprint, possibly jump? Jumping I really don't see, but i'd like a faster run, and a way to crouch under objects when I need to if I ever do. Would allow for cooler and more-varied environments.

I really liked how you could play FFXI with the keyboard alone. I don't mind how every other MMO's doing it with the mouse & hotbars, but I never again got that clean screen feeling I had in FFXI. No mini map, simple UI, simple chat. Good times!

You have way more options when you have both hands on the keyboard too  imo... screw the mouse. :P

I loved the numpad setup, I did not have to touch a mouse it was great set up. I also loved the UI, and I hope the keep both, or at least similar... I very much want the numpad control and a UI I do not have look at! WASD is nice but it is made for use with a mouse, while numpad use allowed us to scrap the mouse and just use a keyboard!

I've always loved using just the numberpad, arrow keys, ctrl/alt for macros, etc

I played FFXI with WASD + Mouse from the start and I had absolutly no problems with the controls. Yes it takes a bit to get used to like ANY other game. Once  I got used to it (by the time I was lvl 4-5) it was just as easy as riding my motorcycle, it became a part of me.

Used my mouse on webpages to click links and um... maybe to start POL, for the 4.5 years i played ffxi ^^

compact kb wsad settings and macros ftw, much better controls than any other MMO out there... still -.-

I'm all about the controller. If they make it possible to customize your key settings, I'm all for that.

Either way, I started on the PS2 and had the logitec keyboard/gamepad. I loved it and it was really nice to use when camping NM's. I used to love the idea that people would call me a hacker and I would tell them that I was using a PS2.... Anyway. I ended up with the PC in the long run. But it was very nice to run it in windowed mode and search the net at the same time. But all in all it doesnt matter to me. I am more interested in the interface and the "Live Action Combat" that they referred to in their interview.

Here is the link to the logitech keyboard i told you about.

Hmmm... controls?  Something similar to XI's compact kb setup with those lovely arrow keys that let the camera pivot fairly seamlessly?

    (|Yes, please.|) :+: <(;-.-)>/

    ....

Oh, and the ability to make deep macro sets rules... they were/are incredibly customizable/editable... Plus, loved how the ALT/CTRL+Number feature allowed for immediate execution of spells/skills/etc. with wide open views of the game's scenery... Something lacking in most hotbar-based games.  I know all of this has been mentioned by others, but it bears repeating because FFXI had some cool UI features and I think XIV should just polish what is already there.

One point of improvement = a friend of mine hated having to type out more complicated macros though and how even the slightest mistake could screw things up.  I happened to love typing them all out and testing them out... and I thought that knowing the UI really gave you an advantage for some things in game (I rocked at Tele-whoring... had everything automated and was *very* fast... a lot of that thanks to a good macro set, and knowing text commands like "/pcmd add" and the like).  But, I'm OCD/Type-A like that, and if XIV is aiming for a more "casual" feel, perhaps they won't include those types of things... which would be a pity.

If SE addresses how cumbersome setting up the macro sets can be, I think they won't have to change a lot.  Others are correct in pointing out the advantages of the gamepad, too.  I only have limited experience playing XI, or any games with a controller, though... so, I can't speak about that except that I would consider playing XIV with gamepad, but would probably play "compact kb" out of nostalgia (if it was even available and anything like XI's compact kb).

I really hope its not slow and clumsy like XIs. I wanna be able to use my mouse to move my character and pan my camera and keybind my abilities instead of using the macro system. Give mouse functionality this time around. I played XI for like 4 years and a lot of the time I felt like I was watching the game instead of actually playing it. I surely don't want a WoW clone but the control schemes of WoW and modern MMOs I would not mind.

    Slow and clumsy?

Using the mouse to MOVE your character? - terrible idea, it's boring and just encourages people to make stupid keybind setups to become pr0 and l33t like the WoW pvp fanbase

Keybinding abilities - terrible idea, tied in with the mouse movement will destroy the combat system completely

Mouse support - would completely ruin any hopes of a menu-based setup

You say you don't want WoW but you want it to control exactly like WoW? Part of FFXIs charm was that it wasn't a hotkey spamfest with a bunch of people using their mice to move and laughing at all the "peons" who enjoyed using their keyboards to play. A huge reason I couldn't care less about ToR is because they're just using a standard hotkey based setup. If FFXIV ends up controlling anything like you've mentioned, they can say goodbye to my subscription. Macros were just barely tolerable, adding all these stupid control methods would just create an elitist group of players who feel they're superior due to the way they control the game

Call it slow and clumsy if you like, I'd prefer to call it unique, if it utilises hotbars, keybinds and all that other useless tat it won't be the final fantasy most of us know, it'll be WoW with in a different world. And you'd be surprised how much a simple thing like controls can make or break a game

I rather liked FFXI's setup, yes it takes a little getting used to, but seriously once you get over the mouse abandonment issues you get used to it and it's great. At least in my experience. I never used a gamepad for XI and I doubt I will for XIV or any other game, because I'm not a fan of console controllers ;) I hate frikken analog sticks.

I'd be perfectly happy if the controls were identical to XI in XIV.

They have said they want the combat to be more action based, FFXIs control schemes would be a nightmare for this. This is not going to be FFXI-2.
