World of Warcraft: Getting Gold

DanaDana Member Posts: 2,415

"Getting Gold" is the focus for Billy Gallon, one of our World of Warcraft correspondents. He gives players some practical advice on how to rake in the gold, while still having some fun in WoW.

A second and also well known way to make gold in World of Warcraft is to play the auction house. Most people know what this is, but may not know how to do it. The basic concept is to buy low, and sell high; how you do this, however, can greatly affect your ability to make a profit. Sure, you are able to do so without any help, but using the Auctioneer add-on makes this much easier. What you will want to do is create an alt and give him some bags and some starting gold. You run an auction house scan a few times a day with auctioneer, and after a few days you should have a good average price on most of the things on your server. You can now look for items that are selling for below the average, buy them all up and relist them at the average price. You can also combine this with enchanting, if you have it leveled. If you know what types of items disenchant into which materials, you can look for items that sell for less than their disenchanted material counterparts, buy the item, disenchant it and relist the materials. Disenchanting materials are always in demands, so you won't have to worry about if they will sell or not.

Read it all here.

Thankyou Dana, you are actually the real way to make money. I can't beleive the OP nonsense. AH is where it is at.

Or just selling crafting/cooking items. People pay to train up in bulk and thats where all the money is.. supplying them.. ANd it is endless because WOW has an economy tat works.. I watch my wife do it everyday hehe

    All kidding aside,

I find it a stretch to call this a guide.

The first article was more accurately titled as musings.

Maybe an intro...but not a guide.

I was interested for a brief moment and thought "Wow, an article on MMORPG that might have some actual content!!!"...but nope, these are the highest level summaries of the most popular gold making strategies.

Specific possibities for arbitrage, specific areas or items to grind, specific tests to see whether a strategy is viable on your Realm...

It all started with a lantern, a sword, and a trap door...

Honestly, any form of crafting is a money sink until you reach the highest levels of the game.  The reason for this is that you will almost never use any of what you make yourself.  With few exceptions, by the time you can make it, you're wearing better stuff.  So your only money will come from selling your wares -- while competing against everyone else who's also leveling up their crafting.

A far better approach is to take two gathering skills for while you're leveling.  One of them should be the one that will compliment whatever your ultimate crafting profession is planned to be.  (For example, if you plan to be a leatherworker, you would take skinning and either mining or herbs.  If you plan to be an alchemist, you'd taking herbs and either skinning or mining.)  Then sell everything!  Unless you're on a really young server, you'll get great prices on the auction house because you'll be supplying all the other people who are leveling their crafting skills, crafting for alts, etc.  And most of them are rich.  :)  Or at least, rich compared to your lowbie.

If you take this approach, you'll be in great shape by the time you can buy your mount at 30.  By 60 you'll probably have enough for the epic riding.  By 70 you'll have more than enough for flying -- although it's highly unlikely you'll be able to afford epic flying -- and you'll also be able to get cold weather flying when it becomes available.

Once you reach 80, that will be the time to make the switch to your real profession.  Farm the materials you're going to need to level up your chosen trade, then make the switch.  Even if you have to buy some resources, the money it costs to level up the lower crafting tiers is a pittance for a high level character to cover.  You'll vendor most of what you use to level up your craft, but that's fine.  What you're really going after are the high level recipes that are in demand.  Especially the more rare recipes if you can find them, which will have little competition.

Using this strategy, you'll have money to get great gear and your mounts while you're leveling.  Then crafting will come into play when it's actually valuable, and at a time when its initial money-sink nature is easily glossed over.

Worst 'guide' ever. I agree whole heartedly with the guy that said this was more of a general overview. I cant believe I actually subscribed to this stupid news letters. Wasting all my email space with numerous daily emails abouts stuff I never read. Finally I decided to check all the crap I get in my email and I saw this and thought "Hey that interests me.". I was SO wrong. 3+ years into an mmo for a 'guide' like this to come out is such a joke. Not to mention the fact you claim so and so 'was all about getting gold" or whatever. Heres an idea if you dont have anything good to write about then don't. If you think you do then please for the love of god write it properly do some research rather then heading to wiki and reiterating what you read there. Anyhow I just had to comment on this rediculous 'money making guide'. Everything you posted in your 4 or so paragraphs could have been explained in one sentence in game. This is in fact a 'guide' however I think calling it that was misleading and it should have been called 'quick tips' rather then a guide. Now if you want to actually show people how to make gold then write a walk through on the topic.

But hey I guess you had to do your job or fill your quota for articles, who knows. Either way what a waste of time and I am 100% canceling my email subscribtion to this site if this is the bunk you pass as articles.

P.S. If this had been posted 3 years ago it would have been excellent, however I am farely sure even then better guides existed. Its a shame you get writing credit for rewording others work, atleast its credit for crap work anyhow.

Yep, this was pretty much the last nail in the coffin of my patience with these articles. This article was not a guide. This is a guide. Specific steps clearly illustrating what needs to be done and why.

Good luck, MMORPG.com. Send me an email when you get better.

lol, nice guide.  It's guides like this, that makes people goto leveling and gold sites in the first place.  Good for my other business ;) keep up the good work!

What a wonderful and educational guide.  I had no idea that I could make money by selling things. How did you discover this clever strategy?
