WAR or AoC??

cybertruckercybertrucker Member UncommonPosts: 1,117

So currently I am playing WAR and in alot of ways I am enjoying it. I am on a good server in a guild with some pretty cool people with it. I just recently entered T4 at the lower end. I play a High elf Sword Master which is just an amazing class IMHO. So here is the delema. One of my good online friends is wanting us to go back to Age of Conan which we only played for a very short time.

Currently in WAR we have been trying to go up by doing a mixed bag of RVR,PVP and PVE... We enjoy PVE but realize this is definately not WARs strong point.. Speaking matter of factly going up in PVE we have also kind of gimped ourselves in someways due to the fact that our Reknown ranks are below our actual level. Its almost as if they put PVE in the game but by doing it you get inferior gear and well inferior stats all around due to lack of recieving reknown abilities. Not to mention the PVE is well lackluster.

Anyway I know that once we hit level 40 which is not far away we will start to catch up with reknown but we still like running public quests outside of RVR and wouldnt mind running Bastion Stair and this new undead dungeon thats coming. However to keep up it feels like your forced into grinding keep battles nonstop.

So he kinda looked back at Age of Conan and asked me the other day if I would mind going back to it. I really enjoyed the PVE aspect of the game for the short duration we played. The only reason we quit back then is because my friends computer couldnt run it but he has a new computer that can run it well now. Also it doesnt appear that PVP in Age of Conan is a forced issue.

I look at games like this. I like to PVP or RVR sometimes. I just dont want to feel I HAVE to do it to keep up. Overall I am just curious which is a better game to play? and why? what are some of the peoples opinions here. I enjoy WAR but I also remember enjoying AoC for the short time. Age of Conan I played a Herald of Xotle which was truly one of the most interesting classes I have ever played in any MMO.

Anyway some feedback would be appreciated. Ohh and I am not looking into other games that are out at this time so please keep it to one of the 2 games listed here. Thanks

I voted Aoc. i have never played War because that game is based on a game primarily built on war between people, therefore it has that Pvp RvR emphasis to it. I enjoy PvP every now and then but i go for FPS games like COD before  fantasy mmo pvp. I've Only been playing AoC for a short time(resubscribed) but its fun,PvE and PVP, and 10x's better than it was at release. PvE is a must frankly, and if it doesn't cut it the game becomes a bore, so if WAR's pve is so poor why are you still paying to play?

Interesting. I asked the same question a few weeks ago, and I was surprised that AOC won overwhelmingly. That said, I ended up trying The Chronicles of Spellborn and I love it, so I think I'd rather play it than WAR or AOC.

Here's the link to my poll.

AoC because it has much better graphics then WAR and its pvp requires skill more than WAR"s

  • Calind0rCalind0r Member Posts: 735

AoC, although its a lot more PvP oriented than WAR, they did make major improvements since its bad launch (while WAR has yet to correct itself). They added a bunch of raid content, and I actually think now that its a decent game worth playing...and I would probably give it a try if not for Aion coming out.

And unless you've ruled out Aion, it would be a better choice than both, but if for some reason you don't want to play it then go AoC.

Really?  In AoC all you have to do is figure out how to make your class one shot (well, one combo anyway) people.  AoC's scenarios are pretty standard too and there isn't much going on.  I'd say WAR's PvP requires more "skill".

@OP:  If you can look past the loads of design flaws and bugs in AoC (and the vast number of exploits used in the end game) then I think AoC is a better.  AoC has a huge number of problems, but I still consider the game to be a bit more fun than War.  Both games have quite a few innovative concepts.  If you plan on playing AoC briefly and not rushing to the end game where the game just isn't as much fun then you'll find it to be a pretty enjoyable experience.  If only levels 1-20 offered the same experience in AoC as 21-80.

first of all only rangers do that at lower lvls , and if your any good you would know how to avoid it such as going behind, strafing and using LOS ,  secondly most of AoC's pvp is world pvp not battlegrounds most classes if your good you can avoid all one shots

Age of Conan is better in almost every aspect. Graphically, technically, skill-wise, content-wise (especially in 1.05).

With out a doubt Age of Conan.

IN the end, Its all based on what you like doing in MMOs

    If its PVE, crafting etc...AoC

If its PvP, keep assaults ...WAR

HOwever, I highly reccomend you stay with your friends wherever they go. A good troop can make any game fun

I'm not exactly sure how you could claim WAR requires more "skill" to pvp...  and tho you mention the vast number of exploits in AoC's end game... you don't mention the vast number of exploits that are used in all tiers of WAR...

I have far more experience with WAR's systems than I do with AoC (outside of PVE...)

and if I ranked AoC higher as a choice it would be based on one thing...

Mythic already had the wonderful experience of doing nothing about exploits the first 4 years of DAoC.  The legendary radar mass bans of Nov 2004 (between the launches of EQ2 and WoW).  So having the same issues (pretty much) during the early days of WAR bothered me greatly.

To some extent I'm probably also amazed that Funcom still exists and can launch a game that works at any level (yes I was one of those that played Anarchy Online at launch).

So the reasons I might rate AoC higher as  a choice between the two.. may not exactly be positive...

But WAR requiring more skill to pvp?

I'd say they both require about the same of whatever skill someone thinks it takes... and I'd say the rank about the same in exploits used "in game".

    Pick between the two?

flip a coin... or decide if the world of Conan interest you more than the world of Warhammer.  (I think that criteria will serve you about as well as any).

I say Age of Conan !

  • BrixonBrixon Member UncommonPosts: 259

I would say WAR. Sounds like you are enjoying it, why leave? Sure if you get burnt out or want a change of pace I could see leaving. Of course if all your friends are switching then by all means join them.

There's going to be a lot of these people in this thread who quote AoC's problems in early release. The game has been vastly improved, and almost every one of the complaints you hear from reviewers and things like that have been fixed...Its a good game now, much better than WAR.

    Why choose?

If you enjoy both and can afford it; sub to both. Split your gaming time between the two and it'll be a long time before you reach the burn-out stage. I've been playing WoW and EvE for about 5 years now; when I get a bit bored of one I cut back on my playing time and play the other more.

Don't both games cater to item-reward PvP treadmills?

Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

No, sorry.  My Assassin could deal 22k damage on a single charge NAKED (it's instant and I can pop out and use it from stealth go ahead and TRY to avoid it).  Guardians were worse.  Any class with the insane amount of +dmg% buffs can do it.  We use to run around naked in a group and one shot people in PvP.  There was no avoiding being one shotted.  There was no winning.

Let's not even talk about the point where we were gem stacking and dealing 50k+ damage on combos.

There are serious problems with the game designers/programmers and their grasp of mathematics.  There are so many potiental exploits (if you consider them that) you can do to up your damage scaling to absurd amounts and go around one shotting people.

Plus if you played on a PvE server where's the world PvP?  Cities and scenarios are all instanced (well cities are kinda instanced in that they shut the zone out to other raids when you do them).

I voted AoC. Both games were garbage when released, the difference here is Funcom has actually improved AoC a lot. Age of Conan has way better graphics, and actually runs better than WAR. I dunno what it is with WAR, the game engine maybe? But it just runs pretty bad even on high end systems, it has slow downs and stutters, especially in large fights. I think AoC quests are a lot more engaging as well, though not revolutionary. Both games are far from complete but I put AoC in front. I also think the new game designer they got is doing a pretty good job turning the game around.

I've never played AoC, and unsubbed to WAR.

But I'd say stick with WAR for the Land of the Dead dungeon atleast, given that it opens in a few days. Ya might as well see if it floats your boat since its due so soon. There are gear changes too I think. Anyways, if it fails to deliver and/or your getting bored, then give AoC another burl.

I can only agree with what others are saying. massive improvements.

but I still feel like that once i hit 20 and reached away from Tortage, the NPCs stopped having voice acting.. I am sorry but I cant get over that. its like giving candy away in th beginning, and then taking it away soon so you only got 20 pieces of candy.

If they would add more voice to every side quest and not just the main quest... I would seriously consider it.

    I don't know ... it's a hard question.....it's like asking :

    Crap or Diarrhea?

World of Warcraft is a proof that MMORPG quality should affect schedule/budget and not the other way around.
