I haven't been playing games for quite a long time now..well..more like..I haven't been plating RPG or fantasy-like game for quite sometimes now. Not that I hate it but somehow I felt that ..well maybe it's just me but..Do we have a surplus of elves, orcs or human around? Not that I'm complaining..some are really cool..but Has the RPG or MMORPG became stereotyped for these races? People digs those fantasy like rpg games but at times I feel like..cant we breakaway from these creatues?..start another revolution of games or something...different creatures..different tpe..and then there's barbarian, Paladin, sorceress and so on...maybe it's just wishful thinking from me.. but it doesn't hurt to wish for a different tune once in a while

Ya, I generally am a little upset when I see a great looking new MMORPG come out with really interesting concepts and enviroments, and then they just stick in the same old races and the same old enemies. I like the Silent Hill series alot just for the general enemies which really cant be described with words... theyre just so different.
I think that this is a problem that carried over from the old pen and paper RPG's. There have been plenty of pen and paper RPG's that were based on the same Elves, Orcs, and Humans formula. I think this all goes back to the concept that games went through their major innovations back whe they were less cheap to create. Eventually the old pen and paper RPG's explored all sorts of game worlds, from Sci-Fi to Western to Modern Espionage... even Undeath. But still, the roots were Elves, Goblins, and Dwarves, and as new ideas were being explored, these Tolkein-esque gameworlds remained a mainstay. I think to some extent, they always will be for the MMORPG as well. WoW has some creative ideas. They have a unique take on the elves... They have playable undead. They have Tauren (basically minotaurs). I think Horizons has some interesting and unique races. Even Everquest has a couple of strange ones, like Frogloks, Iksar, Erudite, and the Luclin cat race (forget the name). FFXI has a couple interesting ones. Either way, it's just a matter of time and financing. It's hard to put hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars behind an idea that's not tried and true. I do agree with your Elves, Orcs, and Humans observation. After a while, it's all a bunch of the same stuff, and that's not very exciting. I'm still eager to see what's next for the MMORPG genre though. I think it's still in its infancy.

stop playing mmorpgs?
Yeah, I think elf, orc and human gets a little cliche by now. Though, I never got bored with them so far. I'm more bored with bears, boars and spiders tbh. Those are nearly in every newby area in every RPG (and usually the reason to kill them is because they overcrowd the forest. WHO CARES?!)
I think that most developers stick to these races because they are well known by most, and accepted by the gaming community as cool races.
But if you want, you can play games where they used different characters. I was just browsing through some screenshots of Ryzom.. looks pretty neat. Some creatures resemble earthlike creatures and all the playable races are humanoid.. but still it looks different from most other RPGs with fantasy based worlds.
Personally I don't mind the recurring of the elven, orcish and human race in games. Well, I hardly ever play human though.. but thats cause I don't need to play one.. I already am one (most of the time.)
