Dual Core Processor troubles.

SilverwatchSilverwatch Member Posts: 232

Hey guys i was wondering if you could help me as i am having trouble with my processors.

Im currently usuing Intel Dual Core 6400 which runs at 2.13Ghz a piece, recently my motherboard failed so i go it replaced with a Intel Bearlake one. Ever since i dont believe one of the processors is running, i cant play games correctly as it is always stuttering, i have a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS (320 MB), fair enough its not the most powerful of cards but it runs Fallout 3 on nearly maxed settings (well it did in the past).

Right now im struggling to use 1 DAoC account when before i could smoothly run 2. When i bring up the task manager it shows 2 different processors as it shows 2 different graphs but when i use Everest Home Edition to have a look only 1 processors is in use by the looks as there is only a % next to one of them. I have checked on my device manager and it comes up with 2 processors and they are working correctly, any help as i am at my wits end, i cant afford to pay for it to be fixed right now either. Thankyou in advance

Did you reinstall Windows when you switched mobos? In my experience Windows is not very happy when the chipset changes on it even if it works with it. Updating the bios is a good idea too. I doubt that one of the cores is disabled but there could be some other problem. Did you check through the bios settings and make sure everything looks good, someone else had a stuttering problem recently that was just caused by the PNP Os Installed option being set to No, causing an IRQ conflict.

i do believe i have the latest drivers for the mobo but would the updated bios be included in that? When i go on the Intel website and search for drivers on my system is doesnt even show up i have mobo or processor. I didnt re install windows after i got the new mobo either, should i do this?

If you have your mobo model # I can find a link for your bios update, they don't come in the regular driver package. IMO a Windows reinstall would be in order too but you don't need a clean reformat. I've never seen Windows be able to update the HAL properly to deal with a new chipset even if it's very similar to what was in there.

You said you believe one of the processors aren't working properly, you can download a program to check what speed the processor is running out, but I can't remeber what it is called

Download this cpu-z (google it) and it will tell you what mobo/model you have as well as how many active cores you got + other usefeull things...

I used that CPU-Z and the results it gave are as follows:

    MOBO

    Mobo: Mincro-Star International

    Mobo Model: MS-7392

    Chipset: Intel P35/G33/G31

    South Bridge: Intel 82801GB(ICH7/R)

    LPCIO: Fintek (F71882F)

    BIOS

    Bios: American Megatrends Inc

    Version: V2.1

Thanks for your help. So will a Windows Reinstall be needed?

Reinstall hardware, then software, if it dont work you either have a dud MOBO or CPU,  sometimes looking too far into things wastes time when the reality is that its just plain broke.

Hmm it seems as you're CPU is underclocked...maybe you have SpeedStep enabled in BIOS...you should definately disable this feature...also youre OS PowerPlan should be set on high settings as well...youre CPU multiplier should be set on 8 (this should be a fixed value although speedstep technology can mess it up)...

Someone had a similar problem it might help...

In any case i would recommend first setting the BIOS options and then reinstalling the system...Windows 7 is now released as RC (release candidate) and youre configurations can handle that quite well so you might wanna check it...you can download it for free and use till next year...
