Personally i never use the chat window, i believe that before you can chat in this window you have to be in some sort of chat group dont know how that works really.
But i do know what i always use, when you are walking around daoc you can type /say <your message> to say something to the ppl standing around you. For instance if you type /say Hello then the ppl around you will see you say "Hello".
Another command which you can use is the /send command. With this command you can send messages to other players. If you are walking around and you know that a player named Chlamid is also in the game you can send him messages by typing /send Chlamid Hello.
This way Chlamid alone can see you say hello.
Also if someone sends a message to you you can reply by simply hitting R.
If you are in a Guild you can simply go to the guild tab, hit enter and begin typing.

But the main problem is that i cant event type a /command, as the text field is disabled
Make sure the main tab is selected.
When you hit the returnkey/enterkey you should be able to type messages.
