Looking for something new

terrantterrant Member Posts: 1,683

Hey all, veteran MMOGamer and his girlfriend (some of us have those, yes) looking for somehting new. First off, here's a brief list of what I have played (probably missing any number of short-lived f2p titles)

EQ

EQ2

Lineage

L2

WoW

CoX

EVE

LOTRO

DDO

FFXI

Cabal

Atlantica

2Moons

AoC

AO

Conquer

Maple Story

Mu

Planetside

Guild Wars

We're both burned out on WoW (love the game, but sick of the people playing it) and want something new. Here's a list of Likes/Dislikes:

1) Must be fantasy.

2) No FFA PvP (call me carebear all you want. I have some games I play PVP only, and some PVE. Looking for PvE right now, but don't mnd the option of pvp when I choose.)

3) No F2P Asian grinders. They're like a drunk abusive boyfriend. I keep going back to them because they swear the new one is different, but it's always the same. OK graphics with no character customizing, linear play, weak quests with no real story, and you can't friggin jump.

Any ideas? Cause, barring something new coming out, I have no clue.

    Hi,

after a similar long list of MMO's that i found all boring i found Ryzom not too long ago. It is really fun for me atm because it makes many things slightly different. It does not have the usual "fantasy" setting with orcs and dwarfs tho, but you also listed eve-online which isnt very fantasy.

I am not sure how pvp is implemented in ryzom yet, so far i only have seen a tiny arena and that you can duel someone with his/her agreement. However there is some sort of faction thing and i am not sure how that is knited to a later pvp - if you are really worried about that, please read up before getting addicted to Ryzom ;)

Why i thought it would suit you and your friend is that Ryzom - while soloable alot - is best played in team mode and awesome fun with a duo or small group.

It has a 3 weeks trial and is cheap after that.

The graphics are outdated but still good and the community is small (but very very friendly) those are the downsides i found so far in Ryzom.

I think I've played all of the games you mentioned except concur, Maple Story, Planetside, and Mu. It's funny because i was also about to recommend Ryzom until that comment about jumping. Ryzom has everything that you are looking for, except you can't jump. I never understood why people care about jumping in the first place.. but I'll move on.  PvP is certainly an option, but not forced. I just started playing again after a long break so I may be wrong, but I believe there are multiple types of PvP or GvG if you are interested. Concentual duels in PvE lands and also a FFa PvP area if you choose to travel there. They just did another update this week, so much of what could be said about the game may not be 100% accurate anymore. I almost exclusively solo in Ryzom which is why I still mention it. But group hunting can be a very fun experience. The game is actually challenging enough to necessitate grouping for some boss monsters which I like. Which makes soloing them an even more rewarding challenge.

The community is generally very nice, and generally more mature than your average mmo. Far older/more mature than WoW. (I can't stand the WoW community personally)

The 21 day trial is nice, mine was only a 14 day back in '05. And yes, the previous post mentioned the dated graphics, but they are still pretty good. (Very advanced graphics/ game engine for '05. the most advanced for a mmo back then possibly?) In many ways Ryzom is a new- old game. It originally released back in '04-'05 but ran into some problems with the original owners (Nervax) which is why I ended up taking a break. The community is what kept the game alive even when Nervax went bankrupt (or whatever happened), and since it's re-release we've already had three or four updates which gives me a lot of confidence that the new owners will finally be able to see the game to its full potential.

15+ years playing RPG's, MMO's, MMORPG's and this game is still in my top 2 of all time.

I guess I really didn't give too many specifics about the game, so if you have any specific questions before you try the trial, ask away. There is just too much to cover without direction.

LOL this is just what I could have wrote, and I think we are in the same boat.

Here is what I am doing atm.

I am waiting for Aion, was in beta and I liked it. There is  some special thing you can buy on CDon.com costs a few dollars that will get you into the beta so you can try it before decide. Check it out. http://downloads.cdon.com/index.phtml?page=product&dl_gameid=2519   it will start on the 17th, so in 2 days.

And while i wait I play freerealms and a browser game called Gladiatus. And also jump into Crossfire sometimes. All of these are free. I wouldnt mind paying to play but there just isnt any good games out atm.

Played wow for about 4 years and got enough max leveled with full epic gear, and I am so bored of the game I canceled my sub.

Keep an eye on Knights of the old republic I think its gonna be a wonderful game.

Except he said "barring something new coming out" and no F2P which I think covers every game you mentioned, or did you not read his post? And I believe the $5 CD for Aion is for access to the beta version that you mentioned already haven gotten a chance to test.
