Hate to burst you bubble OP, but Oblivion has nothing on ES: Morrowind. One of the best free roaming RPGs of all time with the amount of content rivalling your average MMORPG. And even Morrowind has nothing on Gothic series. Although Elder Scrolls is a fun franchise, Bethesda is crap in storytelling department. Morrowind's and Oblivion's quest chains and storylines are contrived, predictable and boring. (not to mention level scaling of mobs) Quests are written pretty badly and are usually not prepared for more unconventional player actions making them often impossible to complete in the way player wants. Scripts are not written as tight as in other games (BioWare's or Obsidian) which for me was pretty much a gamebreaker. Oblivion is an eye candy and that's it. Story is MMORPG repeteable and scripted horribly (i've entered some ruler's castle and he was a vamp, pretty obvious as his fangs were sticking out, but no one was making any fuss about baron/duke being a bloodsucker although the NPCs in the streets were complaining about someone killing people in the night and sucking their blood...). Morrowind was much better although scripting was shite as well. I prefer Gothic series which is written and scripted much better, and it's also a free roaming, and sandbox experience. Bethesda continues eye candy, sandbox games with Fallout 3 which looks awesome but sucks a major buttage in storytelling, quest departments. Compare writing and scripting in Fallout 1,2 to part 3. Bethesda looses every time.
I've played Morrowind numerous times, and the game just never gets old.
I tried Oblivion and... well... I was bored after the first few hours.
I think it's a mix of things...
Warning: Possible spoilers... proceed at your own risk :-p.
First: Setting
Morrowind: You start off as a nobody; some anonymous random prisoner brought to some small swamp village. You don't know why you're there... and neither do they. From there, you make your way and decide just what you want to do. Morrowind is a "world", to me... not merely a game.
Oblivion: You're a prisoner, in a prison.... that just happens to have this convenient secret door. Within 5 minutes of starting, before you're even out of the prison, Patrick Stewart is telling you he's seen you in dreams and that you're going to save the world. This is reinforced not long after and so you begin the game, pretty much already knowing where you're going to end up. That right there was already a major downer to me.
Second: World/Environments
Morrowind: Despite its more limited graphics engine, I think the world of Morrowind is far more interesting than anything I'd seen in Oblivion. It feels more "fantasy"... more alien to me. Even to this day, I think the environments in Morrowind are awesome.
Oblivion: Vanilla, boring, uninspired, Earth-like countryside that you could see in the real world for the most part. Very underwhelming to me.
Third: NPC/AI
Morrowind: Every NPC seems to assume you want to talk to them if you walk within 5'.
Oblivion: Every NPC seems to have ADD... and assume you want to talk to them. Just listen to their conversations with each other. It goes something like this:
NPC 1: Have you heard about that bandit on the loose?
NPC 2: Oh yes, terrible isn't it? I hope they catch them soon!
NPC 1: Yes, I heard he's even attacked some people down by the docks!
NPC 2: Martha down the road at the "Dew Drop Inn" makes a wonderful apple pie!
NPC 1: Oh yes! It is the best in the city by far! Have you tried her blueberry pie?
NPC 2: I hope Mr. Jones down the street can get his rat problem taken care of.
NPC 1: Oh yes, indeed.. Troublesome those rats are...
- both look at you, and speak in unison -
NPC 1: Yes? Can I help you?
NPC 2: Don't just stand there... Out with it!
Then they randomly turn and walk away.
Third: Annoying things
Morrowind: Cliff Racers
Oblivion: Adoring Fan
There's other things... but in general, I just really prefer Morrowind overall. I hope their next entry in the series leans a bit more toward Morrowind, and not as much toward Oblivion.
That said.. I think a MMO set in the Elder Scrolls world could be amazing, if they put all the same depth into the various systems as they do in their other games. And to be sure, the world still has plenty of areas that haven't been covered yet. A friend showed me a world map once, showing the areas all the ES games have taken place in so far... and there's still quite a lot of unused land in there.

Bioware beats 'em six ways from sunday in that regard. Especially with Wrex who is my all-time favourite RPG NPC.
Wrex is one of my all time favorite characters also.
Bioware seems to be really good at creating multi dimensional characters, like wrex for example that is a good guy, with some bad past, highly cynical because of his race going extinct and that cynicism translates in how he communicates with people.

I just love the unexpected humour from the big turtlemonster. (Minor plot spoilers!)
Like when he's on Noveria with Garrus:
You wanna learn about genocide, Vakarian? I'll take you to a Krogan obstetrician's office."
And if you decide to let the Rachni queen go:
"Great, bugs are writing songs about you."
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
Oblivion's the only game I've ever played where I choose a class that has the skills I am least likely to use. Graphics aside, the Elder Scrolls series gets worse not better.
i just started up oblivian on saturday and have not stopped playing since, game is freaking awseome..so much fun and so much to do.
So yeah, id love if Bethseda released and Elder scrolls mmo. id play that forever.
An Oblivion MMO would be great but I doubt they will release one.
I've all but given up on the MMO genre and started playing Single player games again.
Oblivion is what MMOs will be like in 10 freaking years with the way the current devs in this genre innovate and advance their games.
Do yourself a favor and stick with Single player games with the occasional multiplayer game. I've done this and tbh my gaming experience is so much more than it ever was playing bland repetitive MMOs.
I'm currently playing through Fable II with a little bit of CoD4 for multiplayer action. I feel like I wasted the last 5 years of my gaming life on MMOs after playing these games.
Have fun in that world of NPC patatoes.
Being the super patato must be a good feeling I guess....
OP: Take out your horse in Oblivion and ride a bit around: ... you'll see the reason why those graphics can simply not be included in an mmorpg in the next 10 years.
Now multiply the "loading graphics screens" in Oblivion times the number of players that would be playing it on line.
Then come back and post "Why only people who don't know the limits of modern day technology want an oblivion mmorpg".
Then realise why serious game makers shouldn't read these forums. I said serious. No MJ is not included ).
))
I was playing Oblivion on 1Gig ram, a 6600, and a decent processor. If you got loading screens in the open world(instead of just entering a cell, and even then those were short) you're doing something very wrong.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Bioware is an ok company, but i really dislike Mass effect.,,,that game just bored me.
only thing i dislike about oblivian is that NPS seem a little...dead..they just starte at your face emotionless. hehe.
i actually never like Falllout 3, but i may boot it up again and see if i like it this time round :P, but in FO3 NPC seemed more dead than oblevian hehe.
I am a fan of Bethesda. I still have the PC versions of the Elder Scrolls and also the GoTY edition of Morrowind and Oblivion. What I liked about TES games is that the dev team was very creative with the quests, the main storyline for Morrowind was glorious, Morrowind for me is the best single player RPG of all times. The feature that I most liked about these TES games is that you can create a custom class and select the skills you like.
They are trying to get their hands on the Fallout MMO however, it all depends on the (in)ability of Interplay to find the resources to finance it first ...
Is that so? Do you have any links or evidence of that? I'd love to know more.
i just started up oblivian on saturday and have not stopped playing since, game is freaking awseome..so much fun and so much to do.

I prefered Dagger fall when it released, talk about massive game. Morrowind was also a bit better.
But Bethesda is working on a MMO, is either a Elder scroll or a Fallout MMO.
The problem with Bethesda games for me is that it doesn't have the same feeling as a Bioware (or a SSI game if you are old enough to remember them), the npcs kinda feels like they are made out of cardboard. But the games were beutiful for the time they released and they have their good parts, I played daggerfall for a long time.
Still, there is a upcoming soloplayer game called Dragon age: Origins, get it and youll see whqat I mean with the cardboard characters, here is a link to it's webbpage.
They are actually working on both.
Well they will be working on both once those other dudes fails with the finances for making the Fallout MMO.
And the PlayStation 2 Fallout game was pretty crappy so I have no faith in that those other dudes will ever come up with the finances needed.
Oblivion just felt like I was playing an average MMO, but all alone. A single player game should have a MUCH better battle system and animation and play BETTER than a MMO. Its a single player game!!! For god sakes, the animation was done by blind people and all the NPCs looked like dolls=) Besides, I made a lizard man and didn't for a second feel like I was playing a lizzard man at all. Just a human with a lizard head slapped on the body. /uninstalled
I heard its better with mods, but its too late now. Its just too dated.
One of my favourite parts of Morrowind - and to a certain extent, Oblivion - was discovering the lore in various books you would find throughout the land. They were brilliantly written and tied in with the game lore beautifully.
My Google skills fail me because I can't seem to find the names of the guys who wrote the lore behind TES3 and 4, but if they're involved in an MMORPG it'll make a compelling solo experience at the very least.
MMORPG writing is not up to the same standard at the moment from what I've experienced. EVE is probably the best, followed by WoW - which while over the top and ludicrous is still extremely well written, followed by EQ1 (pre-Luclin) followed by EQ2 (which now becomes bland and generic) and finally LOTRO - which is crap lore on the shoulders of one of the world's greatest storytellers.
I don't really care too much about the background story as long as it's well written and composed in the game world. Bioware and Bethesda make games with great stories, so an MMORPG from either of them would be a very scrumptous treat indeed.
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...
I would love to see a MMO in the Oblivion world, Tamriel, rather. The lore & races are very cool. But the gameplay would need some fundamental rework for a MMO.
Enjoy your journey to Tamriel. I follow the series since Arena. It is a wonderful world IMO. ^^

I found Oblivion to the be a very generic RPG in pretty much every aspect. It got some strange races, but they are just animals that look like a bit more like humans. I have only played Oblivion of the Elder Scrolls game, but I found it to be a pretty meh one. It was your typical fantasy story with some evil guys wanting to destroy the world and some good ones who prefer it to not be destroyed. There was really nothing in the game that I found to be innovative enough to make me want it made into a MMORPG as it would just be yet another fantasy MMO only they were a bit more restricted due to their IP.

I could never get into Oblivion or Morrowind.
Kind of like GTA in a way... I couldn't really get into the story that much, as the missions/quests just weren't very good and were all quite formulaic, and you can only drive around killing and stealing stuff for so long before it gets boring.
All in all kind of bland. Cool that they were so open and you could do anything/go anywhere but very bland because every where you went it was all kind of bleh.
Where as in Bioware RPGs like KOTOR and Mass Effect they really kept me engaged due to outstanding character development and story telling and the patented dialogue choice system they use.
The best thing about Oblivion was you were able to put it down more easily and consume less family time/free time. MMORPGs are kind of a pain in the butt with the farming one does for reputation and for the professions plus if you want to see all the content you have to have a work-like schedule for the most part and meanwhile this is supposed to be gaming. Therefore with all that said there is still a market for 1 player RPGs and maybe people will tire of the tediousness of MMORPGs in due time ...

Zenimax is Bethesda's parent company. At least they secured the series, so maybe they are thinking on developing one. I'll love one too.
