ok once i hit 25 i was off to the abyss, and was ready to have some fun with pvp. boy was i dissapointed.....
First off pvp in the abyss was a big group of the guys on the light side and a big group of guys on the dark side standing just far enough from each other so spells wouldnt hit. every once in awhile one group would kind of push forward then the other would counter and push back. it was like everybody was scared to die, you would see a sorc run up cast and spell and bolt back to his group before he gets hit.
hardly anybody was even flying and if they did they would only stay by there group. it was pretty stupid if you ask me, after a couple hours of this i was bored out of my mind. There was ZERO strategy to the pvp it was just a huge mob of people standing there looking at each other trying not to die.
I really hope that there is better pvp then this when it comes out in N/A.

Sounds about any other mmo vvith 2 factions i played, ESPECIALLY vvarhammer vvhich i recently played, vvhen people get more experienced, form guilds and become more tactical there is bound to be more fun, but vvhen a bunch of randoms just stands there you usually end up vvith vvhat you mention
You probably watched a youtube video. First off anybody who played long enough to get to abyss wouldnt refer to them as "the light" and "dark" sides. Secondly, the PvP isnt like that when you first enter the abyss, and thirdly, the abyss would be your new spot to level and spend the majority of your time, so you wouldnt have just a single experience to go by.
And you didnt say what the fight was for. If it was just a random mass fight by a rift, its always going to be like that, it will always be unorganized ping pong when its just random PvP, cause theres nothing really to win, its not like you're fighting for a castle/raid/artifact or something...and no game is any different when the fight is just "random rvr".
That sounds like the early WoW days of open PVP at the Crossroads (XR anyone?), which, I rather enjoyed more than most of the official PVP realms that were created later (with the exception of the original AV before any exploits).
We made our own fun at that time, and it was.

You wouldn't understand
LOL, At level 25 already and you call them Light and Dark side? Look PvP changes and it's constanly different. There is never a same PvP experience. In two groups looking down on each other. It's more of a showdown. It's not 300 where you can run at each other and expect to win. You can also team up with a friend and jump people minding their own business or vice versa.
Also flying isn't to look cool and go fight, you lower your defences when you fly. That would only be used to give chase or to flee at that point.

Man this is the best kind of PvP. Start a group that plays tactically and be smart and you can flank and defeat much largers scattered groups. It is one of the best parts of RvR.
Sounds like the players are the problem. If they are just standing there then its safe to say they are all pussies.
You just need to coordinate everyone to zerg the fuck out of the enemy, or put toghether 1 good group and rush them from the flank, inspiring the others to eventually join in.
I can't help but wonder what happened to all the good pvpers? I guess they are still playing Daoc
edit: As for flying, as far as im aware it lowers your defenses a bit, not good for pvp unless your trying to get distance from attackers (of which their were none it sounds like in your case) and then also the timer on it.
The lack of strategy can only be blamed on the players, I can think of 2-4 ways to have approached your situation.
No i actually played the game and thats what it was like when i hit the Abyss. it was at the first area you get quest ( outside the safe city ) the "Elyos" had come over to the "Asmodians" side looking for pvp i guess. and everybody just stood by that tower that attacks them if they get to close. and both groups just went back and forth sort of trying to attack each other but not really because they didnt want a Templar to drag them into there group with that skill they have.
I can see it being more fun if i could talk to the players and try to organize some smaller pvp groups to go out and have some fun but im on the chinese server and its a little hard to do that. but as for the big groups of pvp i have seen so far, its pretty lame.
Considering the abyss seems to be the focus of the endgame PvP, how large is this area?

Its pretty decent size, has 3 levels to it that you can transport to. its kind of like big floating islands of land mass that you can fly to with tons of area to fly around. and lots of stuff you can perch up on, wich also come in handy for deploying the things you can spawn at ( sorry i forget what they are called ). but at 25 you get one from a quest and people can bind to it and spawn there when they die, comes in handy for attacking the other faction so you dont have to run all the way back to the fight. They can be destroyed so its good to hide them.
