Yeah this sounds like a trollish post. The OP said himself he's either going to not try it or try it anyway. What does he expect anyone to say. I think it was an attempt to start another WoW vs Aion thread ... but instead it seems an OP vs everyone else thread.
I'm not trying to get people to convince me to play.
I simply want to know if the game mechanics are the same as they are in WoW.. [...] If there are enough differences that won't make me wonder why I'm not just playing WoW, then I'm sure I will enjoy it.
I see that you weren't trying to get people to convince you, my mistake. But you have to admit, it's a little strange to ask people how Aion will be different than WoW... what will make it more fun... only to shoot down their answers like you were ready for their responses.
I guess what I was trying to say, though I screw it up (as always) by being too wordy... why are you asking a question if you already know the answer? You asked how Aion is different and what will make it "fun" vs. WoW. I've seen several posters try to respond, but you clearly aren't satisfied with their answers. So, as before, I guess your choice is clear: Just don't play the game. It's not meant to be mean.... as an outsider, it just looks like there are several things you won't like about it and others can't seem to give you some differences that would make you want to play it. I'd just leave it at that.
I think a lot of the stuff they bring up points to what has been the standard line for the game for as long as I've been reading about it: Aion is polished and will offer some dynamic pvp/rvr, but overall it's nothing earth-shattering. So... if it's gotta be revolutionary or else, and the answers people are giving don't work for you, then Aion probably isn't your game.
Can't believe I posted, multiple times no less, on this thread... (;>.<)
Why not just go ahead and try it at the Open Beta when it comes?
Aion does not feel like a WoW clone to me, although this game X clone BS is funny, there's the other topic in this area of the forums that say Aion is like DAoC.
Aion actually feels like a refreshing game to me, and not because it reinvents the wheel but because it takes mechanics I enjoyed from other MMOs and puts them in some form in Aion. But maybe that's because in my MMO history WoW was just another game as many others I have played.
I just went to Gamestop and paid 5 bucks to preorder and get access to the beta. I got in on the last beta, and I was actually suprised.
I played WoW for way too long, and there were lots of things I enjoyed, and lots that I didn't.
Aion plays a bit like WoW, and that's fine with me. All I know is that on the first beta weekend event, I was totally sucked in, and was able to lose myself in an MMO for the first time in over a year. It's kinda like playing a refreshed version of WoW with amazing graphics, a new community with a good attitude, and an amazing world with it's own lore to explore.
Will you love Aion? Nobody can tell you that, but I can say that it's definitely worth your time to try it out and make the decision for yourself.
The combat, is a click to target, click attacks and the like, where it differs is how skills work. I only got a warrior to level 10 (I was having too much fun with the creator heh).
He could do a few things.
From the basic attack skill you learn early on, it can branch off into two chain skills you learn a bit later. A second slash, or a shout to boost your attack power while creating a weak temporary shield.
Then there's the Shield-wall esque ability. And I'll tell you right now, I love its visual effect. You don't just get an icon or buff, but your character physically raises his shield up infront of him, he can't jump, but he can still run, and using any other ability cancels it. Around 9 or 10, you get the ability to shield-slap someone on a chance when they attack you.
Best part about the system is that the skills don't need to be on your toolbar. When you use a skill, its followup (or ups) will appear right in the middle of the screen and you can click those. It keeps you mildly engaged isntead of watching as you click 1-2-3-2-4-2-3-4.
As for the graphics, it has a beautiful mix between realism and fantasy. The models don't look cartoony like WoW, but you can make them look like it if you want (another thing I love, is the customization). The areas I saw look great, even with everything set to low on my laptop. The characters themselves actually have shadows on their armor, and so far, the pieces have never looked "clownish" like WoW tends to make you look. Another thing I like is the special effect shown when you equip something that will bind itself to you. Your character floats up, gets engulfed in a blue aura, then lowers down as the item appears on you.
Quests too were good, yes many were the standard "kill 10" or the like, but the drop rates were far from horrid with everything. Some are accompanied with a little scene which I suspect will have voice-overs for. One quest in particular stood out to me in the beginner area of the Elyos. where an old man asks you to find out what has happened to his pet who wandered off into some mining area.
I didn't get to try crafting, but right from the get-go, you possess a general "gathering" skill that covers everything but skinning, and each time you pick some fruit, grab a herb, or mine some ore, you get a bit of xp. Nothing that replaces killing mobs, but its enough to make you grab a few Angellica or some apples if you're passing by.
I can say the same about PvP, but the idea of a 3rd NPC faction attacking whoever is dominating in the Abyss, as well as the aerial fighting and the subtle bonuses you gain based on movement, makes it sound more sound than WoW's. The only PvP I've experienced that I enjoyed was Warhammer's, mainly due to the fact that you couldn't just run through everybody.
I'm probably splurging now about great things I know... but its been a while since I've played a game that made me go wow. Hell, it took a few weeks for WoW (and that was when i played on a friend's account) to catch onto me, but this game just clicked. My friend made it further than me actually, and was enjoying it himself. The only thing I didn't really like, is the lack of food to restore health and mana, you get food to boost regen, but its not noticable. You get a bandage ability that levels with you, but thats it, though having a short cooldown is nice (i think it was just 15 secs or so).
All I can really say as a fact, is try the game. You're your own best critic. I can tell you this and that, but right now I'm betting part of the "wow" behind the game (no pun intended), is that its a new game and the only other big MMO I've played extensively was WoW, which is obviously growing old to me. If you have to, spend the 5 bucks on a pre-order, get the access code, and mess around with the beta events, you can cancel the pre-order any time if you don't like it, and well, you're guaranteed a copy if you do.
Edit: I agree Mad, the game has a lot of subtle touches in it, some of which evident in the quests. My favorite so far was having to deliver a robe, and you had to find an accessory for it before delivering it. You could go the easy route and kill a common mob, or hunt down a strong mob hiding away in a cave. I died probably 3 times before I took him down with a careful mix of shield walls and shouts.
I've played every single AAA MMO title on the market. All of them... at length.
I just quit WoW for about the 17th time.. because well, I saw a box of sodas in wal mart with an orc on the front, with the words "game fuel" written on it. I don't mind a game being popular, but when it becomes pop culture.. I've had enough. The announcement of FF14 was the greatest news I've heard in years. I expect that this game will be the game to play in 2010.. but right now its still 2009. I resubbed to FFXI because well, I figured I could reminisce all the good times I had while waiting for 14. However, my friends are all trying to get me to play Aion with them. But, all the reviews I am reading say the game is basically the WoW model, with a anime/manga skin tacked on? What is there to do besides quest/grind/pvp? And how deep is the storyline of the game? Honestly, after playing WoW, LOTRO, WAR and Conan.. is there any reason for me to think this will be any more fun than those?
I was going to preorder it and try the free weekend.. but I just don't even know if its worth the effort.
Well, let's compare Aion directly to Final Fantasy XI, because WoW, AoC, WAR are crap. Well, Warhammer has good PvP.
Aion is very grindy, the graphics are great, the storyline is great, the endgame is great, but not anywhere near as indepth as Final Fantasy XI, if you're looking for FFXI, you're wasting your time.
Ok Maybe I wasn't clear enough the first time.. let me elaborate.
1. I have played WoW for a very long time. Long enough to quit and come back 17 times, and have multiple accounts. I've been there, done that. Seeing the pop just cemented just how monstrous of a advertising beast WoW really is. Its not a game anymore, its a media explosion. Ask your average person what WoW is, and they will know exactly what you are talking about. Ask the same people about FF and they MIGHT know, but regular folks most likely won't have heard of it, when they will have heard of WoW because its been pushed to the limits of advertising. I want a game, not a publicity stunt. WoW is the equivalent to Myspace in the social website world, and WWE in the professional wrestling world, and top 40 Pop on the radio. 2. Here is how the WoW model works.. - Create toon - level to cap as fast as you can via quests (quests that are marked so you know who gives them and who to take them back to) - obtain mounts - rush crafting skills to cap if you didn't do it while leveling, crafting consists of clicking a button and waiting. - run an instance (they are all the same, other than the skin and the boss at the end. Its hard to get lost in them, and most are easily defeated without much effort) - PVP (either out in the world or instanced. Most likely the instanced PVP has rewards associated to it.) - end game (farming instances, same thing as the other instances only larger with larger groups and more sought after gear)
when you break it down, its pretty lackluster..
In FFXI you have the same "premise" but its not done the same way. - create toon - level to 10 solo, but the rest of the game you will have many different paths you can follow to achieve goals and leveling mostly takes place in a group. - quests aren't marked, and aren't a means to level to the cap. Most of them have stories to go along with them, and are all completely optional. - PVE comes in different flavors (its not just "Hey, here's a guy with a marker over his head.. lets see how many rat tails he wants?") You can do that, yes.. but there are other options available. Its not just "instances" or "questing". There are different types of quests, different difficulty levels for those quests. Missions that are seperate from quests, that follow a linear storyline similar to an offline rpg. When you logon, while the end result is the same.. the mechanics behind it are not. Sometimes I have a hard time deciding what I want to do, because there is so many different types of pve to partake in. since the PVE is the bulk of the problem, I am not even listing the PVP as PVP is not something that an MMO MUST have.. to succeed. And usually its imbalanced, or just plain has no point. What I am saying is..
if Aion follows the same exact model of play as WoW or Lotro? Why not just play one of those?
Given all you have said I don't think you will like aion. It is different from WoW and LOTRO but at the same time there are some similarities. Many of those are superficial but as you seem to be very particular about you like then I don't think you would like Aion. Especially since you would have to get to lvl 10+ to really see the game open up.
Of course I believe in trying things myself no matter what any one says but my feeling is that you won't like Aion.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I'm going to pass on this one. It just doesnt offer enough in the way of innovation. It's not a bad game but I cold kill time with one of the dozen or so games i already have. Nothing i have heard stands out as a reason to buy the box and the beta was ok but pretty much the same old thing. I havent played WoW in three years. I might dig out Eq2 I usually find something new when i do that.

I still don't think alot of you are getting the point.
I'm not bashing Aion, and if you can find anywhere in my topic where I said "Aion sucks" or anything of the like. Please, enlighten me. I haven't played it yet, so I really have no grounds to "bash" it.
Lets simplify this a bit.
1. I am not bashing Aion. Never have, and won't do so even after I play the game. Not liking something, is not "bashing" it. Not sure who changed the definition of bashing to mean "not liking". I'd note that I didn't say I didn't like Aion, else I wouldn't even be asking in the first place. Please don't take offense or think that I'm not being nice.. I am I assure you .
2. You can find the negative in anything, if you look hard enough for it. The "quest" model is not negative, as long as there is thought put into it, and since different people like different things. Its not possible to say one is better than the other. while you can paint a negative picture for grouping, and pulling mobs. I can paint a positive one just as easily, the same goes for questing as well.
If Aion has managed to use questing, and such in a manner that compliments the game and makes it "fun" then, there will be no issue. I'm sure why its so difficult for someone who has played Aion and WoW both to say, "No, its not like WoW and I'll tell you why".
The End game of Aion looks fun, and promising. I'm glad that they didn't go with raiding. And stuff like that is exactly what I am talking about. PVP is not new.. but the way they've implemented it is in a fun and inventive way. Instead of just raiding dungeons.. we fight other players too.. and that is a very good change in my opinion. But from my understanding, everything from level 1 to the end game is standard quest leveling, and as long as its fun I'm ok with it. I just didn't want to play a game that is identical in almost every way other than graphics to WoW. Economy is bad enough, so I can't afford to throw money down the toilet for games I will never touch. WoW is a good game, just a tired mechanic. They took things from other games and revised them to make them fun again. I was hoping someone would say Aion has done similar and that it does really feel like playing a whole new game.
if anyone has played LOTRO after they have played WoW.. they should know the feeling I am trying to avoid. That was 40 bucks I could have saved for a console game. LOTRO was an excellent game.. but I was already playing a game that was almost identical. I'm just looking for options thats all.
I've preordered so I can get in on the next free weekend.. we'll see if what everyone has said lives up to its expectations. I will try to go in with an open mind, and not assume the worst.

Currently playing:
FFXIV on Behemoth, FFXI on Eden, and Gloria Victis on NA.
Pre-order the game ONLINE. Get your beta key, try the next beta event. Should (when) you not like it, cancel your preorder.
There, you just tried the game for free.
The lore and world is painfully generic, the early game is one of the grindiest pieces of trash I've ever seen, and the end game consists of the most poorly thought out system since the original WoW honor system.
The game's pros? Well, the character creator is flexible, and the combat system is FUNCTIONAL. Which shouldn't even be that damn impressive; but people being amazed by something as simple as a working MMO combat system is indicative of how awful this genre's landscape has become.
Some good ideas, but yet again, poor implentation.
I'm going to be castrated for the above, but oh well; these tools will agree with me two months after release, tops.
At this point I'd be happy with a functional MMO that is nothing special. Since I have a full shelf of really really special games that are all so great I don't play any of them. Some you can't because they don't even exist anymore. I'm not a huge fan of the whole asian style anime stuff but at this point I'd overlook it if the game is solid and plays well. It's amazing that after 10 years of playing MMO's they seem to be so much worse than what they were when I was on dial up playing EQ on a 400Mghz with a 14 in CRT. It really shouldn't be that hard. MMO's are the only thing you can get a million people to buy and get away with it being totally broken without ending up in court.
If your friends are going to play and you don't play a game with any commitment, why not try?
As for playing preview... If you are unsure whether to buy the game at all then it's worth playing it. Otherwise it's better to just wait for release. The events are on patch 1.0 and release will be on 1.1 or 1.2 version. They are going to wipe chars anyways... Better to save yourself for release so as not to lessen the release experience. I regret trying China version. Should have been steadfast and waited so as not to spoil the release experience. ;p

Yes, cuz everyone who disagrees with you must be a tool. Got it.
i think you should try the next beta or go on the ch servers or wait for release and give it a blast for a month and see if YOU like it
i think its great myself its a very refreshing change and i think is worth at least a week or so of your time if you dont like it fair enough thats just your tastes
for me i dont think its anything like wow its more like GW and final fantasy squashed together and like any other mmo you have to grind out your levels be it on mobs or by quests either way its got to be done
but dont take my words or anyone elses m8 just play and see if you like it
is it like wow? lol of course pretty much any mmo will be somewhat like wow if not they're not that bright. What ncsoft has always done better is pvp, especially large scale MEANINGFUL pvp, something that wow always lacked.
theres about 100+ threads now on this board comparing aion to wow i don't think you really needed to post could of just read all of em.
So ive been reading this thread, there have been some good points and bad points brought up. In my honest opinion, dont listen to anyone here, good or bad. Pay $5 for the pre-order get into the preview event and try the game out. If you like the first 10 levels, then buy the pre-order and play it for a month. You can always cancel it.
For myself, I have purchsed the LE of Aion and will be in this preview weekend only...as I do not wish to spoil my experiance at launch.
Again its very important, that you listen to NO ONE. Make your own decision based on your own experiance, because in the end what we like about Aion may be your bane or vice versa. As far as Logo... LOL no comment.
If you enjoy rootkits and security vulnerabilities being installed on your computer, yeah, by all means, try it out.
Also keep in mind that a great many MMO's are all the same game formula down below, so if you've played Ultima or one of the older ones, you've seen them all.
Remember, it has to be fun to be a game. Grinding is a bedroom activity, and the point is definitely not to do my wife as fast as possible.
Most AAA titles are just more of the same old shit. If you're looking for something different, you won't find it in a AAA title. Try indie or F2P games. F2P games mostly suck, but because 1 company will run 20 different ones, they are willing to try new things because if 1 fails, its no big deal to them, unlike AoC where Funcom needs the game to be successful. Indie games are also fun, but the lack of budget shows. Darkfall is a good example of an indie game. Its different and lots of fun but the devs do things ass backwards and it can be frustrating.
Personally, I've tried the other options and I am definately ready to come back to the AAA titles.
... If you will believe some ridiculous reviews (most of which are based on extremely limited game hours over the first 20 lvls), and you don't even want to bother to get the game and try it for yourself, then don't. Don't play the game, don't use your own brain to form your own opinion. Be a follower and allow others to form your opinions for you.
Yes you should think for yourself, but if enough people are saying that the game is a snoozefest for the first 20 levels of a game, then why should I bother? If it's not entertaining in that time frame, then there may be some serious flaws in the game. Personally I'll stick it out for the intial 30 days, but I have found that if I didn't like the game in the first 20 levels (WoW, WAR, AoC, TR as examples) then I definitely didn't like it for the rest of the experience and ended up quitting by the time the subscription ran out.
The lore and world is painfully generic, the early game is one of the grindiest pieces of trash I've ever seen, and the end game consists of the most poorly thought out system since the original WoW honor system.
Elaborate please, the end game Abyss points system is one of my favourite features of Aion. And I never even stuck with WoW because I hated its PvP system.

Should have been steadfast and waited so as not to spoil the release experience. ;p
Weekend events are just pointless teasing. Grrrr
If you are sick of WOW(like) MMOs. Just do what rest of us have done. Skip Aion

Same formulas yes, different communities different storylines, you forget.
If you're gonna be an Asmodian then no don't play it....
Elaborate please, the end game Abyss points system is one of my favourite features of Aion. And I never even stuck with WoW because I hated its PvP system.

Well, if it's your favorite, then I guess I AM VANQUISHED.
Well played, good sir.
