Anyone else notice that there aren't Mafia MMO(RPG/FPS)'s? I can't be alone to want a solid (even if simple) 3d open world (or zoned) mafia game where players effect (if not control) the economy. From weapons production to drug production (ultimately resulting in cash flow), real estate trade/war, etc. I want 1960's art direction. The suits, hats, cars, tommy guns, revolvers, colt 1911's, diners, warehouses, ghettos, petty crime, organized crimes, shoot outs with cops, molitov cocktails through enemy property windows. Goons, body guards, bribes, stock markets, junkies, mansions and most importantly growing a mafia family/syndicate (or opposing [maybe eastern influenced] syndicates). All with their own ranking systems, privalege levels, salary systems, job systems.
I want freelancing, airports, intimidation, bullying, torture, information trade, inside men, backstabbing, spies, blackmail, extortion, money laundering fronts, docks and harbours. I want organized crime people.
Who's with me?

I think he mean something more on the lines of a The Godfather Online. Which that would rock if EA would make The Godfather Online. They already have the license and have made two offline games, so why not.
When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there!
If you had actually read my post you'd find that the only thing APB has in commen with what I described is crime. I know everyone is excited for APB though so it's OK to try and relate such things but bluntly NO APB doesn't fall into the category. Maybe 5%. I'm talking about true gangster stuff. Not like modern day hip-hop wussy gangster stuff. I mean hard 1960's era git-r-done organized crime.
But, but, I want to be a hip hop pimp gangster rapper. That’s real crime right? Posing on a street corner and pointing your fingers at each other like you had a gun in your hand.
I am with the OP, but anything not set in the noughties is hard to sell. Damn its nearly 2010, we are going to need new fashionista gangsters to sing us some songs.
Mainstream MMO gamers aren't ready to accept any form of crime other than mindless genocide. A mafia game would probably have racketeering, extortion, bribery, numbers running and a lot of other crimes that players would be required to do for fun and profit. We've already seen the far from warm reception that stealing from other players had received in early MMOs, and you'll notice it isn't in the newer ones. Now, if you can find a way to work in the relentless extermination of another race, then it may become palatable to MMO gamers, especially if the only reason to slaughter them is because some NPC said he'd give you cash for their ear wax and toenails. You can probably work backwards from there to things like fixing races and collecting protection money but there will still be many that oppose that for ethical and moral reasons.
A lot of MMO gamers just like to get together with some friend to go beat the living crap out of people that were minding their own business, standing around in a field in the middle of nowhere. The last thing they want is to have a fun night like that ruined with horribly unethical content like blackmailing and rum running or whatever other nasty evil things mafia people would do.

I also think that you should be able to make a maffia like gang in APB, it is not exactly what the OP is looking for but it is rather close.
I'd really like to see one of these crime-themed MMOs put in grafitti and then bet on how long it takes before the entire world is competlely covered with it.

Not a bad idea, I really enjoyed the first Mafia, the story, gameplay, and music and everything else was top notch. Translating it to a MMO world could be hard but there's plenty of possibilities.
