DC looks absolutely horrendous (which is not to say that Champions Online is eye candy by any means, as it looks like a steaming pile of dog poo itself), and Champions has no villians (and therefore, most likely, no interesting pvp).
But my question is how are either of these games any better than CoH/CoV? I mean for christ's sake, the game is 5 years old and still looks better, and has more features than both DC and Champions!
Comments
yes, but you didnt even talk about how either of the games look. What I'm saying is that how can these games have worse graphics than a game that is 5 years old???
DC Universe and Champions will probably have a pretty good shot at CoX because CoX has been ruined so much over the years by Cryptic that it struggles to retain 100,000 subscribers.
Also, Im pretty sure the few souls remaining are just waiting to jump ship.
I'm fairly certain CO has PvP. ;D
Both are definately a step forward in the super hero genre. DC Universe looks fun, fast paced pvp throwing around buildings and cars. Champions online is a little cartoony for my tastes but I would still play it. Making your own nemesis sounds awsome gives it the real comic book feel. Also Champions is offering cross platform gaming which is a really cool idea. Tons of customization in both, big worlds dont see how these can come up short to CoX.
I think if either of these next two superhero games does less instances than CoH/CoV that will be one plus for them. As far as the OP's comment on no villians or interesting PvP on Champions, if you will remember, City of Heroes didn't have it either upon it's launch. So I wouldn't say thats a really bad thing that it might not be in at launch...it can always be added.
I really enjoyed City of Heroes but I ended up getting bored with it too quickly because of the heavy use of instances that all look the same. If you were in a office building instance you were pretty much in all office building instances. I'm one that likes a change of scenery that goes along with your character advancement. If these new games do that, I'll most definitely be playing one of them.
Cox has been ruined? Ridiculous. True, there were some recent complaints about PvP changes, but this game isn't at all focused on PvP.
And for a game that allegedly "struggling", they recently tripled the amount of employees they have and have a second paid expansion coming out shortly. In 5 years the game has had 14 (soon 15) FREE updates (Issues they call em) and one paid expansion.
So far, I've seen nothing in either DCU or CO that makes me want to jump ship.
First, I loved playing City of Heroes, and while they are doing an admirable job of adding things to the game, I wish they could have done it a little sooner... like before I got burned out and left. However, I do have two accounts with over three years of time on each of them, so while I am not playing, I certainly enjoyed my time there.
There are few/no MMOs that are as feature rich as a 5 year title at their release point. The question is going to be what is the potential for the game? What can they do to continue to make things fun/exciting. In that regard I believe that both CO and DC have higher ceilings. Their engines were designed with much more flexibiliy in mind. Give them five years and they will likely be ahead of CoX in terms of what they can do. Just for perspective, if someone develops another superheroes MMO a few years down the road, I'd say the same for them as well.
On a side note, while CoX has hero/villian based Pvp... ask people in the game how that's doing these days. There are threads and threads about how the last couple of releases have destroyed it. It is also one of the least utilized features in the game, per the devs. I don't know that I would use that as a reason for playing or not playing one of the new titles.
On one more side note, I'll be happy to be out of a class based system. The balance between the classes in CoX was always annoying. Give me the freedom to choose my powers, offensive/defensive/buff or whatever. I want to customize my hero without being sandwiched into a pre defined role. For that alone, CO is going to get some of my money.
Sir....scuse me sir? Wtf. Lets face it. CoH/V isnt all its cracked up to be what was it like 2 1/2 years later they even thought about putting content into the game. All you could do was repeat missions and 4 hour quests. Oh and if im not mistaken it took them like a year to implement a cape into a super hero game? come on. Im looking forward to both of these games just as much as anyone else. They're new and should hopefuly do right what CoH/V didn't do.
Dont know about DC universe, but I wager champions will do very well. As I recall, CoX didnt have villians either at release.
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
Seen leaked beta footage of Champions Online and it looks like CoH with better graphics to me.
Really?
You are going with that? That is your description of both of these games vs CoX series. Really?
I think the DC has some interesting aspects, trying to bring the console to the PC world. Not to mention that the grafx look more like a comic book than either CoH or CO. if those are truly their game play vids and not somethign that is rendered. Plus, they have the licens so you will be fighting alongside some of your favorite comic book heroes/villians.
CO is touting more customization options on powers and roles than CoX series has on Costumes.
They have a Nemesis factor that allows you to customize the Arch Nemesis of your hero allowing this to be personal and not some generic mob boss that every character has.
Got to run. work impeeding comment any further.
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
Not really sure what you're basing this "looks really horrendous" on... perhaps the art style in these games is not completely to your taste, but I think it's fair to say that both take advantage of much more intensive art and animation technology than CoX (plus DC has the added bonus of having Jim Lee as the art director). Have you actually looked closely at the models and animations in CoX lately? Your eyes may be used to the style, but the chunky models, blocky environments and simple animations make it pretty clear you're looking at a five-year-old game, no question.
As for matching the content, of course they're not going to be able to have the same amount from the outset... no new MMO possibly could. By that logic you would never again play a new MMO, because they won't ever have the same amount of content as what you're already playing (assuming they don't pull the plug eventually because you're the last subscriber). I think it's safe to assume though, from Cryptic's track record, that there will be a strong and steady flow of new content once the post-release bugs are ironed out, and I'm sure Sony will do the same with DC (when it eventually releases, which won't be until well into next year).
So sure, there are similarities between these three games and yes, the new ones will have some catching up to do in some areas. On the other hand they have the advantage of newer technology on their side, and also the experience which both studios bring to the development of their respective titles. They're different 'versions' of the superhero MMO genre, but I don't think you can call them "worse". Not by a long shot.
Bullocks
1) They added that staff 2 years ago when NCgarbage bought the title out right. They've been hemorrhaging subs since then
2) The recent debacle w/ DELETING characters they deemed "exploited" (even though ithe ability to exploit was brough to their attention in fucking beta AND left on live for 1+ months) has made many many many players leave. Instead of taking the time to investigate if the player really had exploited the AE, they blanketed everyone under some time constraint (the details of which have never been released) and mass deleted toons. There are quite a few people, that used their "pact" system, and leveled characters, only to have the character who leveled quickly w/ the shared XP (who leveled through the hard work of a friend under the mechanic they created) deleted unjustly.
3) Yes, 15 issues. 11 of them in the first 3 years under the small dev team, and a measly, and IMO subpar 3 since then
4) The game is now Sub based AND chock full of micro transactions since NCcrap took over. No half educated player would allow a game to play both sides like that. Most people are becoming more and more irritated with it.
5) Additionally, they are seeing revenue through in-game ads (that aren't intrusive, but still revenue) and players are seeing a minimal return.
CoH has gone to shit, and it's sub numbers show that. Even their "Going Rogue" expansion has been rec'd w/ less then stellar results. People are just tired of the arrogant and dismissive choices the Dev team is now making.

Wow, hyperbole much? Hemorrhaging subs? Issue 14, the most recent one, added a whole lot of new and returning accounts to the game. I'd say, sir, that your knowledge is quite out of whack and out of date with the current facts.
ive played my share of CoX a few times, there are things i dislike, and things i like, i wont say its a bad game by ne means, and how can games that havent even been released yet all of a sudden be deemed "worse" when they havent even launched. and even at launch, ne mmo ive ever played still has some bugs/glitches and so forth that will get ironed out . Champions and DC universe are doing the superhero thing their own way. from what ive seen id hardly call either one worse then heroes/villians. ill be checkin both out upon release.
only gripe i really ever had in CoX is i sort of wished mobs and enemies moved a little, like patrolling, or wandering. instead of always just congregating in a group in a corner lol, but i got over it after they introduced ragdoll like physics as i was to busy being amused by that to care haha.
point i wanna make i dont see how we can deem a game not even out of development as worse then one thats been up and running for years. give the new games time to live that long and see how they develop along the way.
Waiting For: FF14,Guild Wars2

COX is fun...but , let's face it...the first thing that caught most players attention was the customization options...and Champions looks like it will dwarf even COX in that regard...both costume and powers. You can even pick from where the power emanates and the energy's color. The latter may seem trivial...but It kind of ruins the feeling of individualism when every energy manipulator can only control the blue spectrum....and no green fire...red ice..it certainly opens up the naming options alone. ...etc. I am good to go for a new Supers mmo. DCUO....that's another matter...still don't know what to think about that game yet.
To think that CO will not be better then CoX is ridiculous. Thats like saying you can't improve on something you've done before. CO is a huge step forward... from the gameplay footage you may see it has some similarities to CoX, but what would you expect from the original developers of COX?
On top of the customization of costume and powers, they've added tons more costume pieces and sliders, tons more powersets and power options.. and customizations on the strength of powers plus, being able to block, and charge attacks will make combat more robust.
The levels are also supposed to be huge now, of course you'll still have to load to the next area, but think in terms of how games like WAR are set up, as they will also have PQs and going in between areas will require a loading screen.
There will also be instances... PVP areas for hero on hero action, arenas, and I've seen an interview where it was said you may even get to play as the villains you create. This is miles ahead of CoX.
As for DC, not much i can say about it as I haven't been following it as closely... I'm not impressed with what I've seen so far.

Actually...I just read the latest E3 article on DCUO (the one in this sites headlines)...and it does sound appealing as well. I'll probably wait to see if it does go to the console....honestly...I think AoC was going to xbox360...yeah right. DCUO though...might give me another good reason to buy a PS3...that and Blueray. Although..I'm almost thinking I should wait for the Nextgen consoles.which might be out in another 2yrs..just stick with the PC for now.. I've already missed so much of this gen.

Dummy logic aside, saying something like "horrible graphics" is just a taste statement. The graphics of both DC and CO are way better, waaaaay better than CoX in tech terms. Whether you like them or not is another matter.
Besides, having the same devs means they'll probably improve upon the things they already did with CoX. They're not making the same game, obviously, and it's not an entirely different concept either, so we can expect it to make basic CoX mechanics better. What maskedweasel said is that, since it's the same devs and the same theme we're talking about, you'll find similarities as to how certain things are done, but it doesn't mean it's an upgraded version of the SAME game. It might end up being like that, but not necessarily.
DC Universe looked so damn boring in the E3 videos. It actually bugged me that they showed a blue/fishmen woman like creature in some kind of tong costume flying around. I know that sex sells but common can't you make it any more obvious?

Keep an eye on CO, they are developing for 360 as well.. not to mention they recently had an opening on their site for a PS3 programmer. I think they're going to try for all 3 markets. The 360 launch date hasn't been confirmed yet though.
And no I wasn't saying that its better because of gameplay footage, I was saying you can see similarities because of the footage. Its hard to see many differences in the footage I've seen other then some gameplay mechanics, graphics and all. CO is supposed to put out some better footage I think this next week.. so look forward to that. I think it'll showcase alot more differences then people have seen in the past.
CO LOOKS like a comic book.
The gfx in the game look incredible, as does the art.
DCU looks pretty good as well.
I also don't understand how the OP connects how the games look to how they will play, or even if they will be any good.
Doesn't matter what the game looks like. If the mechanics suck, the game sucks. No amount of flashy gfx can mask poor gameplay.
However,
Incredible gameplay can, and often does, compensate for poor gfx. If you can make a game that is just fun to play, many people won't be as worried about it having the best gfx available.
CO, and DCU both look incedible graphicsly. Don't know what the OP is looking at.
If the gameplay is as good as the games look, then Cryptic and SoE will both have a hit.
No hyperbole.
Everything I listed is my obsewrvation from my experiance, and what I've seen from the community. The amount of people that are leaving the game FAR out weighs the amount of one-monthers that I14 brought.
Pop on my server, Justice, has gone in the crapper between the mishandling of the PvP system, and further w/ the mishandling of the consequences for an "oversight" (bullshit, they ignored what they'd created) by the developers of the AE.
I can't speak for you, but the game is a far far far cry from the dedicated players I'm used to seeing. Players are leaving the game hand-over-fist.
I get a lot of hands on time with DCUO....I have to laugh everytime someone says it looks horrendouse as they have no clue what the new engine is capable of. The game is being designed to play on a huge array of systems and the PS 3. The things that you can actually achive in that game is mind blowing.....that is not to take anything away from CO, both of these games will more than likely share a sizeable fan base.
