Yeh title says it all. Lately I've been getting back to the genre after a few years of playing FPS games, but cannot seem to find a good, addicting game to play. That's what Im hoping to get help on .
Decided to make a list of the games that I've played, and why didnt/did I like them to make the suggesting easier. They're in no order cause most likely I cant even remember them all.
P2P
DAoC - Loved it when It came out, the class system was brilliant and the PvP was great too. Later on it started to suck, mostly cause the community was pretty much fucked up.
AC - In short, pretty much same with DAoC^.
EQ1/2 - Everquest 1 is probably one of the best games I've ever played; at the time it was pretty much perfect in all areas and I really played it hardcore. Too bad, IMHO it got ruined when EQ2 was released. Never got into it, shitty community compared to EQ.
LOTRO - Tried this when it was released, I really love the Books and Films but never got into this. Probably cause It doesnt offer PvP at all. Classes arent very great either.
F2P
Rappelz - Good class system, best pet system Ive ever seen, but at higher levels the game is just 100% DP'ing with Item Mall 2x Exp items. Very hard to level, too. Bad PvP also.
Atlantica - Seemed like a very good game at first, I really liked the combat system. Too bad, Item Mall ruins this game for me. If you want to be a top PvP'r and success in the Free League at higher levels, I'd say that you must spend atleas 5k$ on this game. An old friend of mine spent 820$ just to Upgrade his main characters gear. That's enough said.
Perfect World/Ether Saga online - Two games that seemed to be good, both fucked up by Item Mall (300k HP/MP scrolls). I really like the idea that you can decide what Stat's to raise yourself.
Runes of Magic - A WoW copy. Interesting dual class system, tho.
Also played Requiem, Rohan, Angels Online, Mythwar, Ragnarok, Florensia, Ys and many more, cant remember atm. So, any suggestions?
Ps. Dont suggest WoW. I will never touch the game. It's probably a good game, I just cant stand the people playing it. Too many of them think that they own the world, that WoW was the first MMO ever and every game after it is copying it. Most of the WoW players I know IRL are retards, too..
Ps2. Oh yeh, dont suggest MO or Aion either, Ive been playing Aion in beta and it's just another grindfest in my opinion; not going to pay that much for it. Just a 'better' version of an Asian F2P game. MO is looking very promising, but dont think It'll be released this year =/

Hey Temego, I'm an old school gamer as well. I have a similar laundry list of games played but my favorites were UO, AC, and DAoC.
It's quite possible you will never get the same experience you had in the older games. I've just about given up on the MMORPG genre since DAoC(probably the last good one I played) started going downhill. Most of the newer games just seem less interesting to veteran gamers. I think this is due to community degradation and marketing.
Back in the old days, it seemed like the majority of the players were more mature. It was rare to run into an 11 year old playing the game. This was partly because computer access wasn't typically available to the younger people. Nowadays, computer use starts at the toddler stage. On top of that, many the games have are dumbed down to cater to the younger crowd.
The other problem I'm seeing with newer MMORPGs is the person with the fattest wallet (or father with fattest wallet) wins. All of these games have an item mall where they take in crazy amounts of money for virtual items. The players that use the item mall to achieve an edge are those who don't want to wait for natural character progression. What's next? Maybe the next big MMORPG's item mall will provide the "Rolodex of Smiting" to instantly kill any player by name. Rolodex of Smiting - Coming soon! Only FIVE low payments of $199.99!
Well, this is all info you are probably familiar with already but I just had to rant for a minute. I hope you find a game worth playing. If you do find one, I'd be interested in checking it out.
i remember some guy couple months ago saying how in all F2P MMORPGs at some point u have to use IM. And how F2P MMOs make more money then P2P MMOs. etc.
well i cant aggre more.
played most off F2P MMORPGs and (in my personal opinion) they r either fucked up with IM or 2 much idk. for 12 year old kids
so atm. "google > MMOFPS list > ..."
I just started playing The Chronicles of Spellborn this past weekend and I'm really liking it. It has plenty of innovative new features that separate from the EQ/WOW clones... Try it and see if you like it. It's free until level 10.
Former xFire user... I only wanted a game tracker and messenger, not a screenshot taker, video recording, broadcasting piece of bloatware.
To bad the game is brutally boring from level 1-10... I know, I know they say they're going to fix that, but untill they do, the avg player won't stick it out... I'm for one... if the game doesn't hook me in the first 4-5 hours... it's a fast uninstall.
Buy Time machine... Massacre all whiney kids, bitch slap blizzard tell them to never make a Burning Crusade.... And Play PreTBC... ^^.... WoW in the olds days was soo fun... but enough of that...
Only suggestions I can give out would be AoC as it is quite the developed game now under new management. Just depends if you like the combat system as it is like a Wacked Mortal Combat/MMORPG style thing.

I would suggest maybe trying a game called Anarchy Online made by funcom..its has possibly the most abundant way to customize your character as far as skills and abilities go also you can play for free without any of the expansion packs to decide wether or not you like it...however its not for novice players who are used to having to simply level up to equip gear and not having to have certain ranks
There are times when one must ask themselves is it my passion that truly frightens you? Or your own?
AoC - different enough from WoW and EQ to stand out, yet similar enough to feel "just right" to many. Hard to judge how individual people will like it, but I would definitely recommend checking it out, especially considering the (part of the) community I know there.
Vanguard - you liked EQ, and your main comment against EQ2 seems to be the community. Vanguard might be a good game for that EQ feel, and the community left should be rather welcoming and old-school.
WoW - yeah, sorry, but again your main comment against it is the community. Enjoy the game, ignore the annoying people (turn off General chat, immediately), prepare to pay for a realm transfer to get into a good guild once you know the community well, and stick to sites like WoW Pro and Elitist Jerks for game guides and tips.
VANGUARD is the game your looking for... download the free trial and i highly suggest if your player can run it to play past the trial! have fun
What he said. I have yet to find a better mmo out there. I have tried most there and I will say I enjoy the oldskool games the most like: AC, DAoC, EQ and UO....
Once you learn the basics you will have a blast! Place your skills where you want em after each level up. And you will never find two characters looking the same except at lvl 1 that is.
Good Luck
i agree, Vanguard should be a good choice.
Also Ryzom is an option for old school players who like it none-linear and complex. I find the Community in Ryzom better and it is easier to get hooked (addicted) by it than Vanguard, but both games should work for you.
I agree with the Vanguard suggestion also. The only thing I can say bad about it is that I came from DAOC too, and the PVP is so unbalanced that you may as well just play on the highest population PVE server.
Since my wife still prefers Warhammer I spend a lot of my time playing DAOC on the Classic Free Server Uthgard.
But I'd go back to Vanguard in a second if people I know would want to play it, or they fixed the PVP.
You shouldn't deprive yourself of an experience (a game) because of what other people do. I certainly hope you don't practice this in real life too? Also, with 10 million+ subscribers, you're going to hate all of them just because of a handful of individuals you have seen? One of the major things that made WoW such a success is the fantastic amount of fun you can have SOLOING so I urge you to give (even though you said not to recommend it..) WoW a shot. It's fun to play, and that's what should matter to you, not what other people are like that play it.
I started with EverQuest, so I'm not a WoW fanboy but it is a fun game.
I completly agree with Vanguard
Personally I am feeling lost with the genre as well. I have played many games since Everquest and while i enjoy LoTRO quite a bit, everything other than EQ and DAoC has left me feeling like the genre has lost its touch. Even though EQ was changed, when i get the money, I will be resubbing and joining my old guild again. As I have researched old-school feeling games, I say that your should give Vanguard a try, resub to EQ, or (not sure on this one) try out that free DAoC free server that "Lolhahaha" was talking about. I have also read many articles claiming that tons of EQ veterans are begining to go back to EQ because they feel that same way.
Also last week SoE launched a new server named Mayong , after Mayong Mistmoore the vampire. It is a 51/50 server where you start with 50 AA's at lvl 51. Also everyone gets level approiate armour and all the spells.
hope this helps you find a new home
