A "Roleplaying" oriented MMO?
MMORPGs, for some odd reason, seldom ever seem to have any form of Roleplaying going on. It sucks, because without roleplay, I don't really get into them.
I'm a former wow player. Yeah, Roleplay communities existed in good number, but they're either dead or dying now. Good roleplayers form cliques that have no intention of letting others in, griefers and l33tspeakers abound, and in general, it's just freaking impossible to find roleplayers or get into a story.
So now, while I wait for SWTOR to come out (Whenever that happens) I'm left starving for something to fill the void. I'm looking for an fairly active roleplay community in just about -any- game. 3d, 2d, Text Based, whatever. So long as theres rpg elements, and roleplayers around, who are fairly friendly and open, I'd be happy.
My computer is pretty good and can handle most games, and now that I'm done with wow, I have an extra 15 a month burning a hole in my pocket.
Any suggestions? Fantasy, Sci-fi, modern. I really don't care.

I hear that Saga of Ryzom has an excellent RP community. I played the trial for a week and while it wasn't really for me, it is a good game.
Plus you can't argue with a 3 week free trial, and only $10/month after that.
I agree. Ryzom - from what i saw so far - has a lovely community and they roleplay quiet alot. There are 4 playable races in Ryzom and 2 major factions that - if you read a little about the story and so on - make roleplaying easy even for rp beginners. It comes by itself. Of course there is ooc chat too but not so intense like in the hype games.
Ryzom is an unknown gem in the genre i tell ya, i am having a blast here and wonder why i never came across this game although it has been out for several years now. Ryzom makes so many personal things come true that i wanted to see in MMO's for so long that its like WTF, this has been done 5 years ago?! Why hasnt anybody told me?
The only let down on ryzom is that it has a low population in the starting areas, but that has also to do with not needing to make any alts in Ryzom, so those you see in the starting area mostly ARE new to the game - of corse you CAN make alts but your character is not level or class based, it is skill based. Anyway, it is harder to explain than to play - go try it. 3 Weeks for free and afterwards its rather cheap! Welcome to Atys! (Dont listen to the Karavan people, they are crazy!)
Well, I recently gave Saga of Ryzom a shot, I had high hopes for it...I checked out the forums and it appears that -most- of the listed Med to High RP guilds are inactive. One of them hasn't been on since 2006.
I did notice the whole event sceme going on, and while I like it, It's not quite the community I'm looking for.
So, close, but no cigar. Any more suggestions?
Age of Conan has a large and active RP community; especially on Wiccana server if you are more into PVE / casual PvP than free for all PVP (If not then Cimmeria server is where you want to go) You can read more about the community in this thread:

I would be amiss if I didn't back this suggestion a bit. I am not currently playing AoC but can comment on the Wiccana roleplaying community. Wiccana is a PvE server but at launch rpers designated it the unofficial PvE-RP server. And of course servers merged. Well the roleplaying community is still rather strong. I know it because I'm a mod on the roleplaying site that has been going since June 6, 2008. Stop by and visit.

I hear Cimmeria, the RP-PvP server is still going alright but can't really say I'm familiar with it. As it is I am contemplating a return.
Other places I know of are Lord of the Rings Online. The server would be Landroval (I am assuming you are North American). The RP is rather open and I found less cliquish than what I ran across in other games. Good luck in your search.
You find a lot of roleplay in RP servers in Lotro. I play in Laurelin, one of the eu servers, is tagged as RP and there are a lot of rp guilds, you can apply for joining in most of them. Probably the same happen in USA servers. Just you need to be carefull with the lore and with the name you choose.
