E3 2009: Star Wars: The Old Republic is world's first 'fully-voiced' MMO

During this afternoon's EA press conference for E3, Bioware and LucasArts announced that the upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic will be the world's first fully voiced MMO featuring 'hundreds of thousands of lines of dialogue'. The announcement came during the concluding minutes of EA's event and featured numerous lightsaber-wielding Jedi mounting the stage, two of whom revealed themselves as representatives of Bioware and LucasArts.

The two companies touted the game as 'the largest voice over project in the history of games and maybe across all areas of entertainment'. As well as premiering a new Jedi versus Sith trailer (which you can see after the jump), they revealed that every class has its own unique storyline.

"If you play the entire game as a bountry hunter, an Empire class, and then play the game again as a trooper, a Republic class, your game play experience will be completely different. As you can tell story means a lot to us. Until now MMO games have shown an impressive commitment to the classic RPG features of combat, exploration and progression, what we call the 'three pillars'. What we're adding is something that's fundamental to success of great entertainment in general: story."

God, I always feel so sorry for actors who have to take part in this kind of god-awful conference schtick. I bet most of them are now wishing they had gone to accountancy school like mom told them after all.

Probably wil be the first MMOG that I actually have the audio on instead of shoutcast.

Does this mean I actually have to put the MMO sound on?

After ten+ years I've gotten used to my MMOs having Black Sabbath and Metallica soundtracks lol.

    Playing: EvE, Ryzom

This game is going to be totally unlike any other MMO ever done. I can't wait to see what they manage to do with it.

Similar in some ways and different in many other ways. I just can't wait to see more in-game footage.

I think the idea of a fully voiced MMO is awesome!  I am really looking forward to this game.

I wonder how far away we are from an integrated voice chat in game that alters your voice to fit your character.  Nothing breaks game immersion faster than the voice of a 45 year old man coming out of the body of a female wood elf, or the burly warrior leading the raid sounding like a 13 yo boy's cracking voice.

I'm hoping for a dialog system similar to Oblivion.
