I haven't been following DF closely throughout its development, so maybe the "hypocrite" from the OP is fair, but...
As I understand it, one of the benefits of the NA server will be a clean slate - everyone starting off from scratch.
One of the big turn offs for the EU server right now, is they didn't wipe the playerbase at the end of beta (assuming one believes it has really finished) so new players just get constantly mown down. It's the equivalent of putting level 60+ mobs in newbie starting areas in traditional mmos.
Dark and Light tried that and look where it got them...
I read somewhere that character transfers from the EU to NA server won't be available until several months after the NA server opens and that no money/equipment would transfer - just the character. There was a discussion in race-alliance chat on this. The feeling was that the big zerg alliances would start characters on the new server, go all out on resource gathering, then delete those characters and transfer their EU ones over.
Just a theory, but this change may be intended to prevent that - to give the NA server a better chance at a fresh start.
Just to clarify...
I fully agree with the position of wanting to keep the NA server available for "fresh start" characters.
That could still be accomplished by allowing existing subscribers the option of creating a single NEW character on the NA server at launch.
The way it is currently worded, and from the information that Tasos has supplied on the subject...
An existing DarkFall subscriber will have to purchase a SECOND account (and possibly a SECOND copy of the game client) IF they want the option of keeping their current EU-1 character AND want to play on the NA server at launch.
I am not aware of any other MMO that has ever done the single character PER ACCOUNT where more than one server existed.
EQ had multiple single-character servers (mainly PvP). Yet you could create a single-character on each of those servers with the same account.
SWG (initially) had single-character servers. Yet, you could create another character on the other servers with the same account.
It will be interesting how DarkFall's subscribers deal with this policy if they do indeed launch the NA server and hold to their existing policy of one character PER ACCOUNT, as it has been recently changed to on their web-site to read.
IF anyone else is aware of a current MMO that has the same policy I'd be interested in hearing about it. Remember it has to have more than 1 server available... so that rules out EvE Online.

Even EvE allows three characters per account - you can only train one at a time, but still have additional characters.

As it stands now there is only one server, so there is only one character per account. Once additional servers open, you will be able to create a new character on a new server.
I sent a 2nd ticket with concerns of bait-and-switch (yes, I know... exaggeration), and also asked about transfer delays. I'm 99% sure the delays are because there has to be a system in place to execute the transfers. You don't simply hotstick the data over. It can take hardware, software, money, and time. I just want to see what they say, though.

Let's hope this is the case. I have no interest in deleting my current character when I reroll on NA-1.
A lot of NA players purchased the game because of the possibility of transfering when a NA server opened, and even if you didn't want to transfer you could still have a toon ON EACH SERVER. A change like this means that any NA players that have invested any significant amount of time in thier character would have to delete that character and start over on the NA server, or wait for however long to transfer. There was no announcement of the change from one per server to one per account. There is no excusing this. It's really sad to see people defending a company when they show such disregard towards thier customers and potential consumers. Just because it's ok with you, doesn't make the action ok.
Defending such behavior is pathetic to say the least. What tasos did falls under bait and switch. If I own a store in the US, and I advertise a product and sell another product instead because I don't actually carry said product, I can be fined an incredible sum of money. Tasos has continued to demonstrate activety in the running of Av that, if he was operating in the US, would get him into a lot of trouble.
Well America is a screwed up country and I am from it so... It is their game they are entitled to make and change the rules however they want. I don't even play DF any more I quit like 2 weeks in. Either way this is not that big of a deal. There is no purpose to play an alt in DF. One character can do anything and everything. My best advice is just quit the game as they will continue to change stuff to what ever best suits money making. You may think its not right but its their game and they are entitled to screw it up in any way they would like.

Are you sure you have been following Darkfail development closely? I am just asking because if that were the case you would know that since Tasos has mentioned a NA server, there will be no NA sever. I find it funny how all these people are expecting an NA server to launch given the sad state of affairs AV is in. It appears that It is impossible for them to open a NA server financially.
Besides out of the 4 Americans who wanted to play Darkfail, only 1 I think is waiting for the NA release to play. Out of the other 3 they have already quit EU just because the game sucks, and that leaves the last guy Dread OG, but he is a mental case, so whatever. My point is the do not have the funds to open a new server, and they don't have the interest in the US to make any money at it..

You have the complete and total right to complain all you want. ALL I am saying is that when I read posts about people complaining about what devs promise I think they are either inexperienced gamers or idoits becuase it happens all the time So good luck with all that...
ADDED: I forgot to mention that I personally am concerned about what I can do now, not what I might be able to do later based on something a developer said. there are things in my life that I have realistic control over (like what game I play) and there are things I dont have realistic control over (like holding people to their promises) and additionally doing the other doesnt hold enough advantage returned for me personally.

I think they severely over-estimated the size of their intended audience - hard-core pvp'ers. And they've complicated that problem by creating a skill-based game with a HUGE grind factor and by having a paid beta, meaning that they can't do a player-wipe.
The combination of all three is killing the game.
A NA server is a gamble. Current player numbers don't warrant an additional server. But the current dearth of players is partly due to the fact that so many players on the existing server have such a long head-start.
I think the existing server is a lost cause and NA is their only hope. But if they open NA now, with the game in its current state, it's bound to crash and burn. There are still far too many serious gameplay problems that will drive potential subscribers away.

There is enough hardcore pvpers for a decent pvp mmo.
The mistake Aventurine did was the grind. We want endgame pvp as fast as possible, not the endless leveling Darkfall is at the moment. Just take a look at all the player made movies, they are all about endgame pvp. The grind in a full loot mmo should be as little as possible and the battles should be about the skill of the players, not the skill of the char.
And people still say the same old crap "just play the game". Just look at the movies and you`ll see that level is almost everything. The high level guilds lose 1 player in a 40 vs 40 battle, and no, I don`t thing those other guilds just suck.
I agree on all the rest, Darkfall will die in a few months if nothing is done. I hope Aventurine will fix the game, so we can level up in a decent time without having to exploit everything. If they do, I will return with my friends.
I think 1 toon per account is a little fucked up. But SWG did it for awhile. It might change later like it did with SWG.
I think it's good to have alts, it allows the user to get a different feel on the game they love. Discover something they might would've over-looked. Hopefully they change this for you DF players, unless you are comfortable with that. Then I see no reason to change it then. I hope no one will take this post as a flame, I can't say much for DF. Havn't gone and check out their site.
I've said this before - DF should allow *no* transfers and make their players buy another full game if those players want to play on a new NA server.
DF needs the money, and I'm willing to bet that most of those that want to play on an NA server will fork over the additional cash to play - and that the new cash influx will be a big "shot-in-the-arm" for the game finances.
They'd be foolish *not* to push for whatever money up-front they can get in game.

I'm really disappointed that I wasted money trying this game. Normally I pay attention to the buzz on forums like this, and reviews - and Darkfall got some spectacularly bad ones - but I followed a guild from another mmo to try Darkfall.
A total waste of money.
They do what you're suggesting, with the terrible reputation this game has, and they may as well just give up now.
The only way they can claw their way back out of the pit they're in is to fix the many, many problems the game suffers from, and then offer a free trial. That's the only way they're going to get subscriptions.

Making people delete their pixels to play on another server is likely a deathblow to any new server, if not the whole game. Making people repurchase the game to play on a new server would be the equivlent of aventurine burning down their offices while still in them. No one in their right mind would put up with that.
Zym,
Have you read many of the forum posts by the fans of this game? Or better yet, the DFO Offical forums? Believe me, the fans would put up with this and far more, and DF can profit by the fans "tolerance" of , let's just say, "suboptimal" treatment at the company's hands.
Trust me, they'd turn a profit with this move. And I'm saying this from direct observation of both the company's actions and the fans responses, I'm not trolling at all........if I were in their shoes, I'd do it in a flash.
As much as I enjoy seeing heated arguments on the community board, I think some of you are getting a bit ahead of yourselves: When I mention one race per server I'm making an argument in the racial context. The reason you can choose to play only one race is because we allow one character per server, and this has been explained before over and over as the only way to ensure player accountability. So let me confirm again that Darkfall has one character per server and that's not going to change. We wouldn't go changing a feature without announcing it and explaining why we did it. We're not in the habit of just 'slipping in' feature changes. Sorry if this created any confusion, I'll try to be more careful next time.
Sorry, but it is no OBVIOUS to me. It is not the same:
Server A (one character), Server B (one character), Server C (one character) = 3 characters, ONE ACCOUNT (one paying)
than
Server A (one character, one account), Server B (one character, one account), Server C (one character, one account) = 3 characters, THREE ACCOUNTS (three paying)
with first option you can at least try 3 races (or more if there are more servers) with the second one if you win a LOTTO prize too.
In Darkfall is obvious because you have just one server, it shows the level of the fail.

I'm thinking back to other mmos I've played that have had European and North-American servers - and they're sometimes completely separated.
Living in Australia, the box-sets we get in stores for mmos are normally the North-American versions, so those are the servers we have to play on. If I wanted to play on a Euro server (for whatever reason), I'd have to buy a Euro version online from overseas.
In those cases where Euro servers have shut down, Euro server characters/accounts have (eventually) been transferred to the NA servers.
This "one character per account" change might indicate the same distinction will apply?

You lost me. Are you saying you think they will shut down the EU server and transfer everyone to the NA server? That is sort of what you imply when you talk about other EU servers shutting down.
Words have meaning and the meaning to me is quite clear. Hell I don't even have to use dictionary.com to figure out what was stated by AV. "One character per account" can only mean one thing to anyone that has half a functioning brain cell.
Which of course leaves out a couple or three of our better known posters

Not my cup of tea, sci-fi all the way.
Which Darkfall isn't :P
I agree that there's a market for hardcore pvp'ers, but it's nowhere near as big as Aventurine must have hoped.
FPS narrows down their target audience a little.
Full loot narrows it down some more.
Add the huge grind to it and you've lost nearly everyone.
Release the game after a long closed paid beta with no player-wipe and you're left with just a few hopeful masochists.
On the flip side, the open skill system + grind and city-building appeals to an entirely different group of players.
FPS loses some of those.
Full loot loses a hell of a lot more.
The paid beta with no player-wipe kills even more interest.
And you're left with two, tiny, disparate groups. If they'd aimed the game at either/or and not had a paid beta, no-one would be calling it Darkfail.
Money in the bank, Brother!
[Mod Edit] With only one server it's obvious that 1 character per server means 1 character per account.
Its never going to reach 3 servers though so theres no point worrying.
Are you sure you have been following Darkfail development closely?
I'm sure that I haven't. I even said so :P
Yes, upon re reading your original post sober, I mis read it. my appologies.

No harm done
[Mod Edit] With only one server it's obvious that 1 character per server means 1 character per account.
They've only had one server all this time and "one character per server".
Then, as we supposedly approach the opening of a new server, it changes to "one character per account".
There's an obvious difference.
