Hi guys, Noob here to MMORPG.cm, but not to MMORPGs in General. I've spent my youngster years at furcadia, and was in adulation of RO until they started charging (the free trial where I live lasted for years, I felt... lol).
Anyhow, that was a sort of thing from the past. I fell in love with WoW and drooling at all the nice things it has. but I'm now a full time university student and now I ponder whether it is worth it for me to continue playing mmorpgs any longer. I fear it's going to take away my study time, which these sort of games tend to do.
So to cut things short I'm just curious to know what brings you guys into the world of MMORPGs? What's keeping you glued to the game? I just want to know what you guys think. Then I'll consider all the options, look into myself and decide whether or not to continue playing MMORPGs. Opinions about whether I should pursue mmorpgs are okay, but I'm just looking whether I right now match the criteria to continue playing them games... Thx in advance...
Nik

First of all, welcome.
And now why I play MMORPGs. I mostly play the MMORPGs for the background story it has and the monthly updates. But at the moment I haven't met a game that fully sattisfy me with that. The story is evolving to slow or the players haven't any influence in it. That was my first reason why, the second one is the community. I love to play with other people that think the same and I like roleplay, not the crap of powerleveling. I'm acting a bit allergic to bad compitition (like ganking, exploits). Also in the RP aspect a game without balanced PvP isn't any good. If someone insult your char with his char you punch him on the nose or put him 6 feet under. Or you can talk it out as well there are so many ways, but none should be taken out with no PvP.
At the moment not playing any MMORPG, tried a few but not sattisfied enough. To little content added, to much ganking, no roleplay and keep going on. Will try out WoW to see how it is when released in Europe. EQ2 don't gonna try because there is no PvP at the moment. And SWG is the one that fell in my best taste only the unbalanced profesions and the miss of a to slow evolving story made me quit it as well.

For me its the chance to explore the unknown. I'm no great socialiser, I don;t care about being the best PvPer (I perfer online shooters for PvP), don't care about being the highests level. I do like to see whats over the next hill though.

why MMORPGs ?
Well, its far the best gaming experience to play with a hole bunch of other players, mess with them, meet with them and explore with them.
No single player game can give you that experience. You'll always feel a bit 'lone there

exploration and character developement, but mainly just a chance to get away for the grind of life for a few hours or minutes, and with that immerse myself in the future, swg or fantasic worlds of wow. to meet people from other countries, and just to have some fun and kill newbz.. (scractch that last one, i actually do my best to make sure the nbew player has a good time in the game.)
Personally,
It is the option to share & play with others, to compete(in no harsh way) with others. However, even a MMORPG must remain true to my desire to be able to solo all the time(never be waiting LFG). Characters devs is part of the fun.
A MMORPG that enforce grouping, raiding, tradeskilling or PvP on me have the same results that a boyfriend/girlfriend coming around with a: ''I'm bored, what do we do?''. Come on, dont just come around expecting me to be managing everything, it wont happen, if I can solo LFG all the time, I will receive group offers and join them, if I cant solo all the time, I wont be playing and wont receive group offers. As simple as that. Maybe I will propose groups if I dont need it for anything but the grouping aspect of the game, maybe not...who can say? It wont be a very focused group building, you can be sure of that. :P
Dont read me wrong, I prefer grouping over soloing...heck, I even LOVE raiding if done properly (the raiding guilds can all die), I recall my first popping in Kael, I was enjoying it, back when it was nothing serious and there was a simple /random all loot policy...as soon as DKP and LC appear, I start disliking raiding awfully, as the focus was on the loot and I was denied the right to dream for some reason, thereby I stop liking raiding and stop raiding. I assume same could apply to well done PvP, but I have SERIOUS doubts on this part and it better be optional like all the rest. Tradeskilling was always boring, it was never fun, I did it because I want to progress, but that is about it. I dont see what can be fun in tradeskilling. Hehe, I recall screaming ''BODYGUARD'' the first time I charm a PoZ and didnt know what will happen when Dictate fade but a toasty me, I also recall 2 paladins and a ranger following me and taking it very seriously(back when their was 3 levels 60 in the guild)!
Anyway...MMORPGs have very nice options that are nices as long as they dont turn it into obligations. A nice soloing aspect ensure that I am online and available, if only for that, it better be as nice as possible(and as grindy as possible since I can end up with more solo time then anything else, and if for any reason I max the grouping system, well, yes, I will max the solo system and turn group offers, but that is better then been offline, no?). If I turn a group offer, then it pretty much mean that for whatever reason, I didnt want to group with them, maybe they plan doing something to easy, maybe they have lame and rudes personalities, however, enforcing a group with folks I turn away is not going to help.

cause there's no end-game. And MMORPGs that do have a sort of end-game (coughSWGcough) you just end up quitting and moving onto the next MMORPG.
Since a MMORPG is always constantly updated and you actually enjoy the game a lot, you keep playing. but look at RPGs like Fable on Xbox. I loved Fable! I wish it had more content cause I finished the game in 10 hours as a good character, replayed and finished the game in 5 hours as a bad person. 70$ for a game that I really loved for 15 hours, but was disapointed cause now the game is collecting dust on my shelves.
MMORPGs I can keep playing over and over again for such a lond period of time. I pay a cheap 15-20$ per month to always have fun. Where if I'm playing normal RPGs I'm spending 50-100$ or more per month cause the games can be finished within 1 to 2 weeks.
So when you think about it, for a casual gamer, MMORPGs are great. As long as the game keeps having more content, you will always enjoy it for not too much money.

I like the social aspect of MMO's. If the community sucks, or is full of l33t'ers and 12 year old idiots, then no matter what the game is like, I'm not going to be playing long. Take EverQuest for example - inherently, it was a dull game. You found a place to start grinding the xp and killed the same mobs, time after time after time until 'Ding!'. The reason it kept me playing was because during the whole grind-time, I could constantly be chatting with people from all over the world about a variety of different topics.
The sense of acheivement in MMO's is nice too, like when you reach the next level you've been trying for, or get a new rare spell, or some nice bit of armor or weaponry. Also raiding - the achievement you get from raiding is very nice. Theres nothing quite like having 60 people all working together, with pinpoint timing, to knock down a mob that theoretically should kill you all in seconds (and does if you mess up).
So thats my two reasons. To the original poster though - don't get hooked on MMO's when you're in University. It ruined my study really badly. I didn't even make it to the final year of my degree. If you think you're of strong enough mind to set your priorities then great, I've learnt that I'm not.
