I quit WoW a long time ago... since then I have tried numerous other games...none of them have even come close in the overall experience that WoW gives you. Despite how much WoW is globally hated, does anyone else think it is still the best MMO out there by far? I was totally disgusted by the game when I left, but it is by far more addicting and better made than most other games I have played.
PS: I quit a month or so pre WOTLK

no, i don't think it is the best MMO out there. It is highly polished and runs well (like starcraft) but it's not the best game around (like starcraft isn't the best RTS around). I think there are games out there that trump WoW in every department but polish (which to be honest, can make an average game experiance become a good one).
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
All things considered, it's the best. But there's so many things I personally dislike (although they're not wrong or anything) that to me it's only #2 or 3.
If you are new to it or havent yet played it in and out, it is the best mmorpg. I also think that the recent and upcomingchanges are making it even better for new people. For the players who are (or have been) into it for a couple of years, it is but the same-o-same for ages.
I have had several 60s, then 70s and now 80s and seen it all. From casual gaming to hardcore raiding back to casual back to raiding, solo play, all the guild drama and such. There is just NOTHING left that excites me about the game anymore. Aside very few things, all the stuff Blizzard added through the years were just the same concepts and game mechanics i already played at lvl 60. Kill, loot, get purple, reroll, repeat.
Sometimes reading the forums or watching clips on youtube brings back some of the old feeling. But i know for shure that in case i resub out of this nostalgia, after 5mins the old boredom kicks back in and there is just nothing left to do for this old timer.
WoW is by far the best mmorpg for people new to it and on the other hand by far the most boring for those who already play it for a while.
I agree. WoW is by far the best mmorpg because of the simple fact it feels like a finished game.
I think the main problem with mmos that are in development and being released is that the devs release unfinished games instead of adding new content.
WOW is to mmo what american idol is to music.
Comparison tells everything.
I know exactly how you feel. Just to see how level 80 pvp was, I looked on youtube. I saw some mage pvp video and it instantly got me wanting to go back to the game. I know it's probably just going to end up the same way.
The only thing that could bring me back to WoW was if I found some amazing guild. I never really had a guild in WoW that I enjoyed very much and that kind of effected my experience.

It's an extraordinarily well done Them Park.
No never played it never want to, not my type of playstyle , too much handholding, limited in every respect, no freedom, no player housing, level based, instanced PVP, cearbear thru and thru, and by the looks of it you will never like another game cause not all MMOs are like WOW (thankfully) so what ur looking for is in WOW and no where else.

a lot of judgements based on one post. If you've never even played it... then you really can't even say anything about it.
the things that make WoW great are far beyond any of those.
Basically no lag what so ever
Great community (if you look hard enough)
Enough quests to keep you interested in at least your first grind to the cap
Nearly NO BUGs
Nearly NO HACKS
If there is any bugs, they are nearly almost fixed immediately.
never a question of enough population
And overall.... enormously stable
Fun BG PVP (IMO)
So what if it is carebear. if it functions better than any other game, and can keep you interested for a great deal of time, who cares.
Would I rather play Darkfall which is as "hardcore" as it gets and have to macro all day, or have tremendous lag and all the other problems that infest that game. Or play WoW which is "care bear" but is incredibly stable and very fun for the most part, or at least your first time through.
I also love this notion of a game being "Care bear". ITS A GAME. All games are care bear. No one is dying in real life, who cares if you lose your gear or not. That is not make or break for any game. I went in wanting to play Darkfall because of all the hardcore things I heard, but overall it sucked balls despite the full loot pvp and all that other nonsense that amounts to nothing with all other problems considered.

What kind of comp. do you have... Everyone I know has quite a bit of lag.

Need to look REALLY hard lol. Way to many immature people.

While I am not a big fan of "grind fests". I think WoW is a little to easy to level in.
Nearly NO BUGs
This I will have to agree on.
Nearly NO HACKS
And this as well, but there are some around.

Generally yes.
never a question of enough population
Just a question of finding the non-retards.

Yes.

Hardly. WoW pvp is pretty terrible.

While I respect people's opinions, WoW is just not a game I will ever miss. I honestly wish the game was never made due to some of the crap it brought to the mmo world. The only reason I played it so long was friends, couldn't care less about the game.
I won't get into what I don't like about it because it doesn't matter. To answer the OP's question, no I don't consider it the best mmo out there, not even close.
Meh.
IMHO, if WoW would be really that good, the OP wouldnt post about it, but would have either never left or started playing again - instead of only posting about it.
Its like telling someone a joke - and instead of laughing, he tells you "whow that was a funny joke". Haha. Yes, obviously very funny. Cant stop laughing, or so it seems.
And for all I care, I just dont. WoW never made it through my initial test if its any good. Right theme (classic fantasy), but really awful graphics (ugly comic style), and quite pointless in its game content. Yeah I could probably play it for 2 months, but meh, I'm just no MMO hopper. I have my Vanguard and now my GW for a bit variation (no monthly fees yay), so whatever.
i agree and when you actually resub because of that nostalgia feeling watching somene playing or vids the boredom and all that what maked you leave at first place comes back pretty soon. as i say it is very polsihed and will give good gaming experience for a new players always.
I thought it was a very boring game.
-Bad travel times.
-Boring combat.
-Annoying quests that have me running back and forth (see bad travel times).
-Single player till you hit end game, then wait for group once you hit end game. With no good just group up a play with others in between.
-Horribly boring crafting.
-And - crap skill systems which leave very little room for different and creative builds.
The one and only thing I liked about WoW was the scriptable/moddable UI. I give that 5 stars.
Not to mention the effect WoW has on other companies.
Gordon Walton, the co-studio director at BioWare Austin, from lessons learned from WoW:
He suggested that too many choices are paralyzing. If a player sees 10, he thinks, "I can make nine bad choices!" According to studies Walton has read about the human mind, "If you want people to do well, give them two, no more than four choices."
Translation: WoW has taught other companies, even BioWare, that they need to dumb down their games.
So not only is WoW boring, but it is going to have a long lasting dumbing down of the industry, RPGs and MMOs.
This is what I was talking about in my post. WoW has brought some bad bad things to the mmo community. It can't all be blamed on Blizzard though, the players have had a lot of influance on these changes. People just want easy games with no thought. Sure the first couple times in a raid instances might be rough, but once you get the bosses down it's like a broken record. It gets old very fast.

Oh, I don't blame Blizzard at all. 100% blame the players.
With over 11 million subs, (and even more ex-players) its impossible for the OP to have an original thought or opinion about WOW. Someone, somewhere already feels the same way.
But I'll disagree with you, I've played WOW and feel that EVE is a much better game.
But that's just me. I'm sure many will agree with the OP as well.

Super Super Super Saiyan King,
Sorry but you should try other subscription-based MMOs, instead of Runescape, Tibia or Maplestory. Maybe you could do some gardening in your neightbourhood to get enough money and buy a decent mmo or you could look for something called a "Trial" on the mmo's websites (it lets you play for free for some days).
Hope it helped.

Its the best at what its designed to do, and yes, I started back in 97 with UO. Its mostly all about being entertained. As a themepark its the best I've played by far. Control and UI-wise its as good as it gets and thats why its PvE and PvP feel more solid than others. No other MMO has as much care put into every facet of the game and it shows. Blizzard designed it for its players. They made a game people want to play and it will be remembered as such. I met great people and idiots while playing just like I have in every MMO. Sure, over the years, some changes have negatively effected what I enjoyed, but I'm not the only person playing. If the majority are happier due to a change, than so be it. Its not MY game. Its every-ones.
No, it doesn't have the best graphics technically, but they're good enough ans the art holds up fine. No, its not the best economy simulator or open free flowing world where players have total control over everything. But thats not the way it was designed, nor is it something most people look for anyway in a game.
The opinions of the few people on this site or any other mean zippo in the grand scheme of things and Bllizzard probably doesn't care at all either. The same few vocal minority haters who have accounts on every forum who spew hatred are insignificant and it shows in the numbers. WOW continues to sell after all these years, while other MMOs lose people. It continues to impress while others play catch up. I don't play anymore, but when I did I had fun. Blizzard didn't betray me. WOW didn't ruin my life or the genre. I just got bored like I do of every game I've ever played. I moved on. Some of the haters should as well.
WOW is indeed a very popular MMORPG, which I personally didn´t like. Wow is not the best MMO, in fact there isnt a best MMO. What defines a good MMO? Every person has different game tastes and everyone has his own personal taste. Some might love it, some might hate it. WoW is totally a marketing based game production, they created a game with the biggest market share opportunity. It s all about the benjamins I can assure you. There are many variables and variations from MMO to MMO, some prefer SCi-Fi or Fantasy, others Sandbox or theme park. It is all about what you like.
One thing im sure of, it is impossible to make a perfect game, unless you only intend to sell it to one person, which doesnt make sense at all.
Sharing my tastes, my personal favorite MMO is, well was, Pre-CU SWG. I have played dozens of other games, but for my taste, no other MMO has brought to me the same experience SWG PreCU gave me.
Trying to make SWG like WoW, destroyed the game itself. or at least, for me.
Just because someone has an opinion about a game, WoW in this case, doesn't mean they are a hater. There are lots of games I do not like, but it's just my opinion. I don't expect anyone to take them personally. I do the same with what others feel. If you enjoy WoW them I'm glad you had fun playing a game you liked. I am still waiting for a game I can enjoy. I played WoW for many years, but mostly stayed because of friends, not for the game.
There is nothing wrong with posting my opions towards the game however, and since the OP is asking for it I thought I would chime in. You are correct in saying that Blizzard is doing what the game was designed for, making money. I relize people get tired of WoW bashing, and frankly it does get out of hand, but somenoe needs to feed the trolls.
I think WoW does offer the over-all best PvE experience of any MMO currently on the market. I only give it this award because the game has been live for so many years they have two full paid expansions and multiple free content patches... so it's really hard to find another game with as many raids and dungeons for group PvE, and they are designed quite well where most fights are a lot more involved then simply walking in and beating on stuff till it dies. They have perfected the group dynamics, though WotLK is a HUGE step backwards in group dynamics compares to TBC imo.
That being said, a good 75% of it is totally obsolete because they chose to expand the game by raising the level cap and raising the gear cap with each successive content upgrade.
The game with the most potential for PvE that is currently released in Warhammer. They already have all the public quests and Tome of Knowledge, which are pretty awesome, so as long as they continue to release new content like the new Land of the Dead stuff WITHOUT ever raising the level cap, so that advancement is horizontal rather then vertically linear.... in a few expansions/content updates WAR will be the easy winner.
In terms of PvP, WAR could definitely emerge as the king of PvP MMOs with the heavy focus on RvR, but they have to give players more reason to want to fight in open world RvR, they have to raise the stakes to add an element of RISK to make the rewards feel a lot better and be more desirable. They need to de-emphasize the scenarios, players will always flock to whatever medium allows for the fastest/best advancement and they need to make that open RvR for WAR to grow and be successful instead of hemorage and die out.
FFXI actually beats WoW by a mile when it comes to quantity of PvE content. Too bad most of players won't even get to the cap where most of it is. It's pretty nice for us who already got there though. I would argue that the quality is better as well, but it's more complex than that (content from 2002 to 2005 sucks for the most part, but 2006-2009 its better than most of the things I've seen in other MMO's).
A lot of it has to do with the fact that the progression is horizontal, not vertical: events don't get obsolete.
FUN and making money. FUN first. Money second, since no one will pay the money to play it unless its FUN. EVERY MMO is about making money. Otherwise, no one would make them. You think CCP works for charity or would keep supporting Eve if no one wanted to pay for it=)
Opinions people can have. Trolling is another story. Saying you didn't like it because it didn't offer the type of gameplay you want is mature. Saying WOW ruined the genre, is a cartoon, is for kiddies, is simplistic, dumbed down or any other derogatory phrase people love to throw around, puts you in troll territory. You're on the border with that MONEY comment=)
I certainly believe you, I just wish I could experience all of that cool content at the cap that they have added over the years with all the expansions, but I've tried twice to play that game and have never gotten too far.
I wish I would have started when the game came out, but now going back I just can't stand the pace. The controls and movement really bug me and the pace of combat and all the resting and required grouping... I mean I'd rather be in a group 100% of the time in a MMO but I like having the option to solo if I don't have one!
