The next BIG thing however will be Blizzard's new MMO. Whatever it is that they are working on atm.
Nah Blizzard kinda shot themselves in the foot with the way they released new content in their expansions, they would have to raise the bar quite a bit. I mean look at SoE they were on top with EQ and decided EQ2 would be the next logical step and we all saw how that did. put plainly people are tired of Blizzard.
And nearly EVERY game advertises with a cinematic trailer its advertising 101: give the customer some eye candy.

I don't know, I'm an MMO fanatic and a Blizzard fanatic who has always despised World of WarCraft, yet I'm excited about Blizzard's next MMO. Think about it: Blizzard is the only developer whose best interest lay in producing an MMO that doesn't lure away WoW's subscribers. It is in their best interest, in other words, to make an MMO very much unlike World of WarCraft. Blizzard is in the perfect position to bring us the greatest innovation yet, if they recognize this.
I'm not saying I think they will, just that they are perfectly poised to do so.
Favorites: EQ, EVE | Playing: None. Mostly VR and strategy | Anticipating: CU, Pantheon
First let me say that most upcomming games will have "something" people will enjoy/like or love, but I personaly feel the next big thing is a MMORPG that isn't even in development nor is spoken about.
I still feel that MMORPG are 3/4 years behind how tech is used within singleplayer games, so the innovative stuff we see with singleplayer games might be seen in MMORPG in about 4/5 years from now.
Will I enjoy some of the upcomming games? Oh sure, I might even enjoy those games I do not consider to be called MMO's but might have fun with them anyway.
One never knows but I don't think it will be the next Blizzard release like I've seen some guess. The "hype machine" will more than likely overstate, chew up , and spit out whatever it manifests itself as like it has so many others. We've all seen it happen to our favorites, right?
No, the "next big thing," if there is such a thing, will sneak up on most of us and will probably be far from what we envision an mmorpg to be today. Or who knows, it could already be right under our noses...
Blizzard may be able to make another game but i doubt they will ever be able to put another game on the market with the same unimagined success they had with WoW. Right now the MMORPG *new* market seems dead. Their used to be a ton of games to buy and play and for the past 6-12 months i've checked the shelves to simply find NOTHING new. That pretty much sums it up.
what do you think? next big thing? Completely agree with Reklaw here. As it is right now all the fantasy MMOs are stuck in the point, lcick and watch with hotbar skills. Someof them are tring to move away from this by adding twitch style combat or lvling skills aas you uise them. Whcich is a good idea. Just has a lot of holes in it.
Sci-fi space shooter games are pretty much in the same boat. Youre in a ship you see a another ship, lock it, shoot at it until it or you dies. The very few "ship" fighter games where you can get out of your ship is there so they can say you can get out of your ship and really nothing more.
I think the next great MMO generation will start when you see gameplay like Heavenly Sword and God of War. Where real time aspects and movie like camera angles are added in while still being able to react to situations that may occur in a MMO game. But like Reklaw said. This won't be for at least another 4-5 years when the devlopment companies start losing money on the hack and slash then lvl idea of what a average MMO is today
TERA does look beautiful and fun, but I think the two next "big" MMOs after Aion will be TOR and FFXIV, both of which I'm sure will battle it out for second place in the market and be huge successes.. TOR is being designed with a whole new philosophy of story and rich immersion with full VO and such, and we can only guess what SE has planned for XIV, but I'm sure it'll be astounding.
We'll see with TERA..
Waiting for Fallen Earth, World of Darkness, Old Republic, FFXIV
I doubt it will be 'The next big thing.' I doubt we will ever again see what WoW has done. Every year there is more and more MMOs on the market...we see 4 or 5 released a year. And each new MMO might be the 'Next big thing'. All this is doing is spreading the players thinner and thinner. There won't be a mass exodus from WoW to XXnew game. Players will simply be scattered across 20 or so mmos...rather than all focused on one.
The next big thing will probably be one of WoW's expansions or Blizzards new mmo that they have announced and said that it will be based on a totally new IP, new lore, new everything.
Should be interesting.

I don't think there's going to be a next big thing.
Games are kind of drifting towards online play and soon we won't be able to tell which game is an MMO and which one isn't. The huge hits like EQ and WoW are over for now I believe.
It's been almost 4 years now since Blizzard released their game and no game has managed to put down record numbers, aren't most people who would want to play an MMO already playing one?
There will be massive games again, 10million+ players, but I don't think because they're MMO, just because they're good. Diablo 3 could go massive, but it will be because it's a good game, not just because it has online play.
I Dont really agree with the context of "Next Big Thing", gameplay is subjective, everyone likes something different, it will be like that forever. Some people will rebel from "The next big thing" just because it is "The next big thing" if you see my point.
But Money wise the next thing will have to be from Blizzard, The devs on it now (most of which were transferred from the original Wow team) will be wanting to work on something much different from Wow. I also presume that this game will not be targetting a WoW type of audience (Which is getting younger and younger as the game has progressed)
Anyone who thinks it is World of Starcraft or a WOW2 are misinformed as it has already been announced Blizzards unannounced MMO is 'NEW' IP.
I am excited for when it will be unveiled. Its already been in development for quite some time 2-4 years? Once it is announced I believe the launch will follow very soon.. After say 6 months of mass marketing and Hype. Should be interesting.

we can only hope its anaunced at this years blizzcon, bur your delusional if you expect newly announced game to be released within 6 months, there was no single mmo like this, and there wont be.. 6 months from launch you enter closed/open beta.. , its 2 years from launch you announce the game..
while there are many points where early announcements hurts games.. there been plenty of games announced last summer.. which are comming this summer. for which iwas dying to play, last year.. today? i could hardly care anymore..
but mmos aint same.. a year from release.. well maybe.. 6 months.. no

This is the game that has both auto aim and manual aim right?
with manual aim you do more damage I think

Unless they change there whole format, I doubt they will release anything worth playing.
I've never seen nor heard of this before until now, so my guess is no, it doesn't have enough advertising apparently.
My hopes in the next "big thing" go with Aion and if that fails, Final Fantasy 14 whenever it comes out.
Though by "big thing" I do not mean WoW. Just a decent hit like Lotro
The next big thing?
Nope.

I have hopes for 38 studios or Red 5's games to be ground breaking. Other than that maybe ToR but I'm not so sure it will have longevity.

if "big thing" means "as big as WoW":
nothing, I'm afraid.
my personal guess of big things:
1) Guild Wars 2
2) SWTOR
3) ?
Hype train -> Reality
World of Starcraft
I can only hope that's what Blizzard is working on.
EQ1-AC1-DAOC-FFXI-L2-EQ2-WoW-DDO-GW-LoTR-VG-WAR-GW2-ESO
The end of all MMORPGS is: *insert drum roll* The Holodeck.
That is the next big thing...anyone who says otherwise is deluding themselves. Imagine the fun you could have in there...huhuhu.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Guild Wars 2
