Looking into Final Fantasy II and thinking about FFXIV made me wonder if this is the new type of system they will be using. Here is a quote from Wiki about FFII for people who don't know the growth system in FFII:
"The game is one of the few games in the series to not use experience-based levels. Each character participating in battle develops depending on what actions they take. For instance, characters who use a particular type of weapon frequently will become more adept at wielding a weapon of that type, and will also increase in physical strength and accuracy. However, trade-offs do occur in this type of development; that character's intelligence (magic power) may decrease with their overuse of physical attacks. Characters who frequently cast a particular magic spell will learn more potent versions of it, while increasing and decreasing their intelligence and strength ratings respectively, forcing players to choose which strength to build. Hit points (HP) and magic points (MP) increase with their use; a character who takes a heavy amount of damage in a battle might earn an increase in maximum HP, while a character who uses a lot of MP during battle might increase their maximum MP. This experience system had several unintended consequences that allowed characters to gain much more experience than intended, such as cancelled character boosting commands still activating, and players having their characters attack each other and winning battles at very low life levels, thus causing their hit points to grow massively."
Is this something that will be developed in FFXIV? It sounds cool.

Interesting system although it was quite flawed and got annoying after awhile, but if SE were to tweak this and make it work properly then yeah this would be a heck of a system to play with. This would probably take much longer to max out than the current system in FFXI!
Sounds like a fun system (I never actually played FF2, one of the few I haven't played)
I'm not sure it would work online though... I'm sure it could be tweaked to work but I don't think they would use it
MMOs played (In order of how much I've liked them): Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Vanguard, City of Villains / Heroes, Guild Wars, Warhammer Online, Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa, Anarchy Online, Ryzom, Final Fantasy XI, Matrix Online, RF Online, Rappelz, Hero Online, Roma Victor
It got annoying after 10 minutes...
It really hit the fan for me when I had one character that would cast magic constantly never have their magic skill go up but someone who used cure once got a ding. Plus remember this is kinda how the skill up system is with FFXI (which is still frustrating) where you can have two identical builds and just one gets lucky and skill up constantly while the other gets left behind. I really hope FFXIV isn't FFXI without exp ...
I'd like to see a hybrid FF9/FFT system where you would learn spells and skills mainly from different pieces of equipment (able to use only with the item equipped till you mastered the skill in question).
And as for stat growth, it could be achieved by spending job points (like FFT's) to learn passive, stat-boosting skills.
Actually learning stat-boosting skills from equipment would also work, but then the game would be completely item-based, which is something I don't think anybody wants now.
