Any military lads over here?

See, I want to join the navy in a year or two/three (first have t do a coordination course for it, and then the noncom officer course) but I was wondering if being in a military gives me enough time at home to spend money on gaming/MMORPG's? If not, too bad, not like I care that much, I'll probably just acquire a real life then, but I was just wondering, because atm I do like MMORPG's.

And on a COMPLETELY different subject: Is EVE Online anygood? I heard you had to mine and had to do extremely boring and uninteractive combat and had to "jump" through the galaxy which could take hours. This all sounds kinda shite, but otherwise all the features seem so cool and indepth. Im burned out on the EQ-ish MMORPG's, I want something different, but I want strategy too. And interactivity, actually meaning something in the world, or galax(y/ies) in this case instead of just being another level 13138180 warrior.

Thanks.

Imp, I am in a high level raiding guild in eq and i can tell you we have a few military guys who play a good number of hours.  I don't think you will see any time your first few months however.

Im a second Lieutenant. Im allowed to use my lap top and satelite hookup as an officer. I clock a great many hours in on Everquest 2 and Planetside. Im waiting for Citizen Zero and Tabula Rasa. Guild Wars and Sky and Beyond are possibilites to because there free and do not require a monthly fee. I went on active duty after my 4 years at Georgia Military Academy.

Why am I still a novice member if I joined years before most of you and have more posts?

As a single Marine living on base, I had plenty of time for EverQuest a few years ago.  The Navy is the service that you would have the least amount of gaming time, as it's highly likely that your first and if not, then definitely your second duty stations would be on a ship....Besides, squids are wimps.  Be a Marine.  ;-)

And EVE Online is alot of fun.  If you're going very far, then yea, starship travel can take a little while, but it's all done automatically (if you need a pee or beer break).

Well, SIR, I believe that it's a formula of how often you post based on how long you've been a member and how many posts you have made.   :)

Thankyou Marine. Acknowledging an officer even online.

It truely depends upon what your MOS in the navy will be.  I'm in the Navy and I'm a Corpsman, which is to put it simply a medic for the Navy and the Marine Corps... because Marines are the bastard children of the Navy we have to baby sit them. image  I'm just messing with NickDiese.  Though seriously it really depends upon what job you choose to pursue in the military that will difine your free time, I'm currently serving with the Marines and I've deployed with them and I still have plenty of time to play MMO's and carry on with everything that I like to do outside of work and games.  No matter what job you choose it will not completely consume all of your free time so that you won't be able to still do what you want, but truthfully being on a ship will hinder your abilities to log on often or at all, but being on ship is actually pretty cool... well at least until you hit some ports! image  If I could give you some advice it would be to identify what it is that you like or want to do in the Navy and then find out what all of the jobs that relate to that are AND, try to find someone you know that is in or was that can tell you about those jobs.

    Hey!

I was a Lt. in the U.S. Army for about three years (Chaplaincy Candidate Program). While it was not Active Duty (I wanted it to be but it wasn't allowed as it would interfere with graduate school) I made some pretty decent money for the Drills I attended (I was classified as Reserve until graduation).

While that was part time, i made enough to live comfortably (true I had another job...but it was just a side job as schooling was full time).

If you get into the officer training program in the U.S. Navy, my answer is No and Yes. No you will not have enough time to really play anything in terms of long term mmorpg and Yes, you will be able to afford it. But then again it really depends on your MOS. If you are a submarine cook then chances are probably not. It just depends on your location and if it's reasonable to have time off to get on a computer and to have a signal (being 800 feet under the surface of the Atlantic isn't the best for internet connection.

The U.S. Navy is the most deployment instense branch of the Armed Services and I hope you're not married. If you are married, I hope your wife is ok with you being gone for 6 months at a time. Many other Armed Forces allow you to take your wife and family with you (The Airforce being the best at this).

But, if you're single and you want to "dabble" in games rather than mmorping them out....then The Navy is good. Heck, I like the Navy..I just didn't join them because they were the worse when it came raising a family.

    About EVE:

My wife is part of the CCP team over there and have been playing it since beta. She loves it. It all depends on your tastes

Oh I'm talking about the Dutch navy, which you guys course don't know anything about, but I trust the American and Dutch navy aren't too different, except for their size, heh.

Wow. All officers and marines here.

    /salute

Oh and I was wondering, is it fun being a sgt in the navy too, despite not being an officer? =p

    Oops sorry, double post.

My image of the army in general is that there is very little time to play, especially when you are on a boat but i think you do not need to play anymore because you will have found new friends and new things to do. Another reason why I don't think you can play a lot is because you are away a lot: a friend of mine just went for 4 months to Kosovo (I live in Belgium so that's right next to your country). My brother is trying to join the army and become an officer.

One day all will die, surely you but never I.

LOL, that post made me laugh.

Marines are the definition of cool, if the Full Metal Jacket marine training is half as hard as in real life, you guys are teh r0xx0r.

But I prefer being on a boat myself. Better living conditions I heard.

I'm not a military personnell in any respect which is something I'm quite glad about as if I ever did have to go into combat I'm pretty certain I'd end up dead. It happens alot to me in online games at least.

Eve I do know abit about though. Its not for everyone, its very tactical you don't have to do any mining if you dont want to. (I don't, can't stand the thought of it). Its a VERY intense experience as you can be attacked just about anywhere except inside a space station. It has a great community of players. Its worth playing even if you only play for a few hours each week (skills train while you're off line.) It looks magnificent.

Advice for a new player. Make sure you do the tutorial, get yourself into a good Corporation (players guild) one that helps out New chaps. Explore high security space and hunt down pirates, mining is a good way of earning cash early on, (even if I don't personally like it).

Bi-annual physical fitness test has 3 parts.  On the 3 mile run a 15 minute time will get you 100 points (the maximum for the run).  The longest you can take on the run depends on your age and how many points you score on the pull-ups and crunchs.  You might be ok with 18 minutes on 2 miles, but you'll have to keep at least that 9 minute a mile pace (which is a standard minimum pace) for the 3rd mile, and again, score well in the other 2 areas.  I wish you the best of luck.

ROFL...haven't toured many naval vessels, have ya?  I suppose if everyone was 5 ft tall and 90 lbs it'd be ok....

Is that for US navy, or US marines? Or not US? Because I assume it will be totally different where I live.

Marines...Sensetarget said he was in a ROTC program and was wondering how fast he'd have to run.  The U.S. Navy's physical fitness test has lower requirements.  For you, if you're wondering, call up an enlisted recruiter and find out. And good luck to you too!  ;-)

No one can do much more unless they are big in sports or work out a lot.  Just takes time and a VERY ugly man standing over you screaming what a **8** your mom is and he's gonna kill you.  That will get you motivated. ;)
