Ok, so the title to my topic really has nothing to do at all with the topic itself, except it has Aion and Pez in it.
I'm a frequenter of the MMORPG.com forums, and an avid PC gamer. My expertise however, lies not in MMOs, but in the RTS genre. I go all the way back to classics like Dark Reign, Total Annihilation, Dune. (if you wanna talk RTS, hit me up, I always love a good discussion).
I'm afraid my experience in MMO's is reather lacking. That said, i have played WoW, CoH, LOTRO, and some of the more mainstream modern MMos.
I have been following Aion for almost 2 years, and am a regular on Aionsource, lately, i havent been posting much there (more retards then you can shake a stick at). I have a Korean Retail account as well as an english beta account i obtained after preordering my collector's edition(epic wootz).
I'm sure you've noticed my idiotic posts here and there "Aion is a WoW clone". Pay them no heed, they are mostly to get a reaction out of blind Aion Fanboys/girls and to get trolls to say even stupider things.
On to the meet of the topic.
What i've seen in Aion is something that i've always wanted in an MMO. Something, that takes the player far away from anything they've ever seen, where what may seem familiar at a distance, ends up being alien, and wonderful once you get closer. The World itself, is a breath of fresh air from the gritty dark, and frankly ugly medieval type worlds of Warhammer, LOTRO, WoW and AoC. The immersion is a big part of the game to me. The music, the sounds, the environments all mesh to make a wonderful experience.
Combat that has the familiar target, skill buttons, but with 2 new aspects.... combinations, and flight. The world PvP has me hooked as an idea as well, I never liked the instanced battlegrounds in WoW, not just because capturing a flag is retardedly stupid in a battle-zone i mean... this isn't effin' Halo. I need to feel there is something bigger to what I'm doing. That my death is something to avoid, that it will not only aid my opposition, but it will hurt me as well. That defeating my enemies means more then just sending them to the nearest graveyard. (I think this is were my love for RTS comes in) The massive battles for castles or raid bosses, or fights that just happen out of coincidence.
Character customization to give a player individuality in appearance as well as ability. My understanding is that Solo pvping is much less effective, so by socketing your equipment differently, it makes a whole world of difference compared to oh say WoW. This partially makes up for the lack of talent trees, which I hope they will add something as either a substitute or otherwise.
Personally, I believe that if theres a game that can "Kill" WoW, I believe it to be Aion. By kill, i don't mean beat it into the ground until there is nothing but a bloody pulp. I mean, to destroy WoW's status as a cultural phenomenon by superseding it. Instead of WoW commercials with Mr. T, we will have Aion commercials with Chow Yun Fat or Jet li(Epic lulz). Will WoW continue being a large, mainstream MMO? Yes and no, I believe if Aion does take WoW's cultural phenomenon title, It will also end up dragging along a ton of subs (Gut feeling... mostly).
Anyways... hope to see you in-game, if your On my side, I've got your back (When its most convenient) and if your my enemy... don't expect mercy just cause ur a girl.
Cheers
Pezhead
It's almost 2010, and I am just not wiling to tolerate clunky graphics while being told that "gameplay is more important than graphics". That excuse won't wash with me any more. I expect my games to have both good graphics and good gameplay.

Completely agreed, this game is a WoW clone where it has to be a wow clone (wonder what people would say if the leveling wasn't quest based or if the UI was clunky, intrusive and non intuitive) but it's the differences between Aion and WoW what makes me like this.
Now, I don't think Aion can be a wow killer, mainly because I feel we are a minority, by we I mean those of us who enjoy MMORPGs PvP instead of FPS-like PvP, the art style, while being something minor in my book and while being pretty well executed, might also turn a lot of people off, Im one of those who think that as long as it looks good and it runs good, it's good.
Aion, however, has chances to be the second most popular mmo in the west, because that spot isn't that hard to achieve nowadays (300k subs maybe?) and because Im pretty sure that those who want to like Aion won't be dissapointed (with that, Im talking about those who claimed War or AoC were the next coming from god, and ended up dissapointing many of them because the lack of polish and promised features).
Loved your post. Its true, it really is refreshing to be in such a beautiful world (when our real world has become so ugly) and have some very well done orchestrated music. Game was done very well no matter what all the trolls say. Im excited for Aion. You are excited for Aion and so are millions of other people! weee
you know, I don't post here much; basically just a reader, but I will say this. I too played aion over the past weekend, and being a gamer since EQ, i've played and beta'd mostly every main stream MMO that has been out. I know this is out in china, still, the beta was the best beta I have ever played. It doesn't feel like a mid-evil type mmo, it's more an upbeat fantasy I guess you could say, something different. I don't think it will kill wow, but it it is going to impact a lot of its players ( me being one of them ). A lot of us are looking for more and I believe this has that capability. I was in a highly respected guild with 15+ real life friends raiding Ulduar, and I am leaving for Aion after playing the beta.
It's a breathe of fresh air, and i think there is more people (like myself) who feel the same way. Quitting and going back-and-forth to wow after the failure of both AoC and Warhammer. Aion has the premise of being great, I know I only played until level 10, but if the pvp/rvr is as good as it looks and as people say, then it should be a positive alternative to the mainstream MMO's out now.
I wish my friends would join me, but for most of them WoW was their first MMO(which is unfortunate). Mostly when they all saw me playing EQ a long long time ago they thought they would never like such a game. Wow is more friendly then mostly any other MMO that I've played, which isn't a bad thing, it's just hard to leave it. As for others like me, who have been there before wow, yearning for something new, I believe Aion is it.
Yay Pezzy!!
I loved every second of the beta and I'm really looking forwards to July. BUT that's nothing new I knew I'd love this game even with the PvP. What has surprised me is that I was pushing my husband to play mmos with me, he's not much of an mmo player on his own prefers single player and RTS. But I got him a beta key and this weekend this is what he said:
"I was telling you I was going to play this with you to spend time together, but now I REALLY want to play this for sure!"
Just awesome!
(,,,)=^__^=(,,,)
I also am looking forward to trying this game. I plan to preorder today so I can play the next beta. My first mmo experience was AoC. Hard to believe considering I am an old man of 40, but have always loved video games. I still play AoC, but have grown tired of it. Still need to check out the new patch though.
I tried SWG, EQ2 and Eve but could not get into them. I think it was the fact that they had been out for so long and I felt I had missed the boat.
Anyway, can't wait to try Aion.
I pre ordered AION few weeks ago. I normally dont pre order games until they are out in retail and i have been able to try them. The only two games I have EVER pre ordered was WOW and AION. That must say something!
I have only played up to level 8 so far, and I have really enjoyed the game.
WoW and Aion have very different focuses. WoW is a mostly pve game with the majority of WoW's NA / EU population on pve servers. Aion will have a much more pvp focus and rewards system. I simply do not see the WoW pvers leaving for Aion.
Now WoW pvers are more likely to give Aion a try. The main factor there will be how fast / complex is the combat, how interesting the fighting areas, and finally the separation of good players from the bads (ie can a bad just grind long enough to get the same rewards).
Trust me on this: what you like on this game (the alien look) is what most people don't like. As in more people want the generic medieval crap of Oblivium than the alien beaty of Morrowind. Most people will roll in "human warriors" than in something strange, .... most people don't like the strange, and want something "familiar".
