Darkfall: Spotlight Blog - Darkfall's "Surprise"

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

MMORPG.com blogger beau Turkey writes this new entry concerning Aventurine's announcement of a North American server launch and gives his own unique perspective on how to support (or not support) an independent development studio.

No one should be surprised that the Darkfall developer(s?) have hit you up for more money. I don't care if they are charging you for the North American server, transfers or just because they are poor. I don't care if they are charging you because they are just greedy. Here's the rub: in the world of independent games (and a good deal of the time in the Big Leagues) stuff like this happens.

It's 50 bucks. 50. Ask your parents for a loan.

50$ is alot compared to the fact that customers already paid around 50$ for the game itself(i may be wrong, please correct me if i am) and 15$ each month. I didnt know they were charging for server transfers till just now. For a game that has gotten so much controversy and flak, you would think the developers would try and rememdy the situation, although they seem to be doing the EXACT opposite. 50$ is to much for a server change, imo they should have made it around 20-25. Atleast then your not paying the price of the game itself. Hell people should just buy a second account key and have a character on both servers since, "its just 15$ a month extra".

    From the official announcement.

Clarification: American players wanting to clone and transfer their characters do not have to buy another client. Everyone else needs to buy the American Darkfall client to play on the American server. The European rights and the American rights to Darkfall do not belong to the same company, therefore you cannot freely transfer between the two territories, as is the case with most MMORPGs. Our offer of character cloning / transfer to American players is because we had said that we would try to accommodate them should they want to start playing on the European server.

It's one thing to be nickle and dimed.  It's another thing entirely to be nickle and dimed for a crappy game.  RIP Darkfall.

"It's 50 bucks. 50. Ask your parents for a loan"

When a blogger starts off with an ignorant statement like that in their blog, I'm not even going to waste the time to read it.

And by the way, I'm in my 50's and my folks are in a nursing home, I think that they'd be a bit stripped for cash and all.

Again, that single statement managed to roll both ignorance of people's situations and generalized everyone into the same category - the blogger ought to be ashamed of themself.

I suppose the character transfer will be way less than 50.   If it make sense, around $4, maybe $12 or $15 if are greedy.

so IS NOT 50. I suppose.

Aventurine and Tasos never said they would "try" to accommodate.  They said they would accommodate.

The content from Darkfall is below.

    ------

Our publishing effort has been for a common infrastructure and we’ve been adopting solutions with a global reach so that the setup in one region could be shared by- or quickly duplicated in the other. I don’t want to say that we could be up in N. America in no time, but that’s our intention. -Tasos

    ------

Players in North America are welcome to participate in the European Launch. The plans for US servers aren’t finalized at the time of this announcement. We will offer the option for character migration to US servers for N. American players who wish to use it. We have had people playing without problem from all over the US and Canada. That being said, our servers are located in Germany and distance does affect ping-time. - Tasos

    ------

Our first release is the European release. The North American release will follow as soon as possible but not until a few months later. We’re allowing players from N. America to participate in the European release due to this fact. Of course we’ll make some allowances for these players if they would like to move to the US server when it launches. - Tasos

    ------

They're right after the European servers, but not soon enough for a lot of players to wait. We don't have a solid date to announce on a N. American server and that's why we're allowing N. American players the option to play on the European server. Ideally we would have loved to be able to launch world-wide but we just don't have the resources to do it right. - Tasos

    ------

Athens, Greece – December 5th, 2008 - Audio Visual Enterprises SA and Aventurine SA in a joint statement today announced that their highly anticipated MMORPG title Darkfall Online will launch across Europe on January 22nd, 2009. North American players are also welcome to participate in the European launch of Darkfall which will precede a North American launch.

    ------

The misleadings from this Aventurine organization has been apparent for some-time now. I was once a supporter in the hopes, as I had hopes for the Funcom team with AoC, that the organization would embrace their player-base and launch a product that was close to complete but with understandable improvement needed, and with clear communication.

What was delivered was nothing short of an Alpha/Beta stage development initiative with spin language targeted at a North American audience to draw those players into funding their experiement so a EU server could be supported.

There was active deception on the part of Aventurine by excluding anything having to do with North American customers having to purchase a second account/client at @ $50, as they did for a game-play early-start on their initially launched EU server.  There was active deception with their spin language by excluding information about character transfer delays, and additional transfer fees following NA server launch; and I personally believe that the transfer fee is going to be closer to the $40-$50 fee for another account/client, as we did for the support of their first server, the EU server.

Yes, had that very critical customer-centric and important communication/information was honestly owned up to and simply shared beforehand, even as a "might have to", many NA players would not have started until the NA server launch.  I'm willing to bet that Tasos knew, which in my opinion, is why he conveniently failed to mention it. $$$.

    Greetings,

I think Aventurine should follow the example of Taleworlds. Not all Indie companies are created equal.

My support will go to Mount & Blade, in order to see it become a successful MMORTS oneday. Darkfall gets what it deserves.

Encouraging family members to give loans to each other for a game in the middle of an economic crisis, is irresponsible and very poor advice, to say the least.

    Best Regards,

    Jim.

I have no hate versus DarkFall or even Aventurine, but seriously MMORPG.com. Why is this blog being spot-lighted? The first few lines pretty much generalize everyone into being a kid having to beg for a loan, and you call this a spot-lighted blog. Then the blog goes on to talk about how people cry over a game using unkind words to say the least, is just shocking. What next, you going to start spot-lightning spam blogs with people selling gold? You guy's just keep one upping yourself time after time. I know this is Stradden or whoever's site, but don't you atleast want to try and look professional, or does it really matter anymore? I don't want to hear the classic excuse of don't read it then, because you put it on the front page for people to do just that, read it. Or should we all just stop reading the front page, much less this site. I'm just shocked, really I am.

Again, I miss the point of this blog.   I have yet to read a post from this writer that does not appear way out in left field.

New server or not, the games still is in beta and has a long way to go before it is ready for public consumption, but it is not a bad game and many do have fun in it.

If you are going to play this game I suggest you do so when the server opens, because soon as they allow character transfers you will be besieged with a bunch of botted characters that will significantly alter your odds in pvp.  Aventurine is still learning how unscrupulous players are when it comes to getting an edge over other players.
